Apologies if An-Sophie already has a thread. I couldn't find one.

As Belgium's top junior I think she deserves a thread.

An-Sophie is now number 22 in the U18 ITF Junior rankings. Only 4 players ranked ahead of her are younger:)

The best chances to make it in the "pro-circuit" is to continuisly do well at a young age. This doesn't always mean winning the tournament, but being a semifinalist (at least). Proof thereof you can find in the top 25 ITF under 18 ranking, for female players born in 1994 (as an exemple, but it "works" for other birthyears too, most of the time).

From the six '94-ers, the four semifinalists from Tarbes (considered the main tournament in the world for 14 year olds) were there: Kolar lost against Robson and Mestach lost against Gavrilova in the semifinals, Gavrilova won from Robson in the final.

Even at age 12, Robson and Mestach were in the semifinals, in Auray (same as above, but for 12 year olds).

When looking at their WTA achievements, they all four have done quite well. When you check each player, most win their first ETA title under 14 at age 11...and their first under 18 title at age 13... or close.

It is maybe not a general rule, but very often looking at the top 4 (maybe 8) in Auray and Tarbes is a good indication for where they will be at age 15-16. It will be interesting to follow each one to see how far they get in the WTA-rankings and at what moment.

Clearly, Robson is somewhat "ahead" of the others...winning the Wimbledon Juniors at age 14 and the Australian Open Juniors at age 14-15 as a finalist is unusual. But we shouldn't forget she is physically (growth-wise) quite a bit "ahead" of the other three. Kolar, Gavrilova and Mestach just start to "catch up" now.

So, personally I believe those four probably will continue to do well, IF they don't get severe injuries of course.

She played a really good first match. Beck played an extremely strong first set. She brings every ball back, really every ball. The rally's were verry long. But the difference between Beck and Mestach was that Beck putted all her energy in the first set. She hadn't the energy for hitting every ball back like she did in the first set. (The first set was crazy good for her.) But An-Sophie was maybe not the best in the first set, but she was the smartest. She had energy enough and could keep her level high :yeah:

After finals in Tortosa, QF in Bucharest, finals in Charleroi... 3 weeks in a row, I think there was not much energy left anymore. Up to 4-4 in the 3rd set it was at times a good match to watch (against Dinu). But maybe a consolation, IF she had gone through, the next day there was Sloane Stephens and that wouldn't have worked out anyway, not being tired the way she was. Good decision to withdraw from Halle, take some rest and now get to play Roehampton and Wimbledon. We'll see what happens the coming two weeks. Good luck An-Sophie...

I saw An-Sophie play for the first time today - her match vs Robson was broadcast on BBCi - I really liked her. She plays with Schiavone-like passion and determination. It's a shame she had to run into Laura so early, I think she coud have made a deep run with a better draw. Hopefully we'll see her in the top 100 some day, she definitly has to the talent to make it that far.

Congratulations to An-Sophie and Demi for winning the doubles final in the Casablanca Cup in Mexico! Their first GA title in doubles.
Tomorrow An-Sophie can go for another GA title, in singles. It should be a good match against Garcia from France.
They've met before and depending on the situation and how they feel, either one can win.

In any case, An-Sophie will be ranked 5th in the world ITF u18 next Monday. Winning tomorrow even gets her into a 3rd position.

So, keep up the good work An-Sophie!

An-Sophie is a very talented player, she is number one by the juniors, she won singles and doubles at the Australian Open this year. She's not big, but can be useful to handle the ball, same as Kirsten. She is also mentally strong, same as Yanina. Ideal combination :) She has a great future, she must continue to work hard and gain experience on the WTA tour. Have a few more years of patience :)

Yes, but I'm missing power in the equation, like Justine = variaty + power. Kirsten is a waisted talent because she is missing power, she/they should have added that to her game. Does An-Sophie play with power, although I reckon there are several degrees in this? Since I have never seen her play. Thanks.

From her website :

"Today, January 4th, I left for Australia. I am SO glad I can be on the court again and play tournaments. I can tell you, 7 months without playing matches was "like hell" for me.

BUT, I am feeling good and ready to go. Playing my first match in the Q's of the Australian Open will - no doubt - be a challenge. But I am ready for it."

Looks like Sophie is back :) She's playing $10,000 Maaseik this week. Already won 3 qualifying matches and another one in the main draw.

I wasn't rooting for Sophie in juniors :oh: But I really feel for her now, after all these injuries :awww: Such a bad luck to get injured for 7 months and then, after only 3 matches, to get injured again, for another half an year. She has no ranking now, so she has to start over. I wish her the best of luck and to keep herself healthy this time :)

Rankings thread has Anso projected to 226!

The cut off for Wimbledon is in 2 weeks so counts points this week and next. I may be getting ahead of myself but if Anso can finish this week well and continue next week Id say that isnt entirely out of the question to get top 200 and Wimbledon qualifying draw.... Wouldn't have thought that a few weeks ago!

Good Luck in the semi today Anso.

Hopefully she isn't getting tired.

If I worked for one of the clothing companies Id definitely be speaking to Anso. Obviously whatever relationship she had with Nike is over as she is wearing clothes that are 2-3 years old.
They wouldn't even need to offer Anso financial support yet just clothing and shoe supply. She is such a talent and by getting involved now they look to the future.

Come on someone sponsor Anso!

Glad she isn't wearing last Nike outfits :p

An-Sophie was 2-0 behind, then came back 2-2. Yet each game is heavily fought for. Will be another interesting tough match probably.

Yes, the WTA top 200 is almost within reach. And therefore Wimbledon Q's become a possibility as well. Staying on grass certainly was/is a good decision. Coming up are Notthingham 75.000$ and 50.000$, Birmingham and 's Hertogenbosch both 235.000$ and all 4 are on grass. Impossible to play all 4 of course, but 1 or 2 would be nice. And Wimbledon Q's as last grass tournament, "cherry on the cake" so to speak. Would be like a dream come true.

6-4 and 5-0. It looks like it is going faster now. 5 breaks for An-Sophie so far (and 2 for Junri). If she can make it a rather short match, it can help her for the final. Not getting tired is also important now.

6-4 and 6-0! Well done An-Sophie! If she can add another win Sunday, she does what Ana Ivanovic did, 10 years ago: win two Japanese 50.000$ in a row. And WTA 216 is already there now.

Another good win!

By my calculations should be 216 now ...

Glad the match wasn't too long and taxing

Unfortunately Anso lost the Fukuoka final 6-7 2-6.

Still a massive effort to play the final again this week.

Good luck for next week.

Already a nice week Anso :)
I think she should retire for next week i don't see her going far again right after 2 finals, she said in an interview that she felt tired after two rounds then it must be even worst now. And this surface seems to be a pity ^^ Take some rest girl and come back even stronger :p

Anso vs Arefyeva :D
Pass: 0516

That forehand

First time i've seen her play and i'm convinced she's good :) Arefyeva took an injury break in the 2nd but she already lost twice against Anso even on clay so it was NID anyway
OMG a that handshake, Arefyeva looked pissed and i think that Anso told her something with a smile but she just walked away.. apparently she's now pissed to be Anso's pigeon :oh:

edit: Totally forgot i'd already seen her almost a whole match in a ITF in France last year

Well, An-Sophie herself once said it on TV... here is the link, maybe you've seen it before.

There is a part where she says that there is a lot of jealousy between the players, but she didn't want to mention names or nationalities.

Sam.
May 16th, 2013, 03:51 AM
Thanks :) It was when Anso was winning everything in juniors :p It's sad because she seems to be quite friendly  But the jealousy will come again soon enough when she'll rise the rankings  Don't she said there was a lot of respect from others players in Japan last week? She maybe wanted to say that Asians girls are actually more fair than others :p
