Yeah, it's really ridiculous, escpecially considering that the prize money already went up for the big WTA tourneys this year.

Hong Kong exho is back!

Stars and Heroes to Dazzle at Hong Kong Tennis Classic January 2010
27 / 10 / 2009

(Hong Kong, October 27th, 2009) Stars and heroes are lined up for the Hong Kong Tennis Classic 2010. The city’s showpiece event will feature four of the World’s Top Ten, plus five Grand Slam Champions, and it takes on an exciting new twist with the inclusion of four male legends. Next January, teams from four regions of the world will consist of two ladies and a man, the male player adding big name appeal to a star studded female cast. Athletes include US Open finalist and World No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki, and Sony Ericsson Open champion and World No. 6 Victoria Azarenka who will both represent Team Europe. Opposing divas Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams will represent Team Russia and Team Americas respectively, and they will be supported by World No. 9 Russian Vera Zvonareva and Argentina’s No. 1 Gisela Dulko. Sports icon and proud Chinese Zheng Jie headlines a determined Team Asia Pacific - the shy but tough Sichuan heroine is the new darling of the Hong Kong crowd - and her team mate is Ayumi Morita, Japan’s No. 1 player.

Four male heroes line up alongside their illustrious female compatriots. Team Americas showcase former superstar Michael Chang, who makes a welcome return to Hong Kong. The Chinese American was wildly popular in his prime and still punches above his weight; he has a French Open crown to his name. Team Asia Pacific boasts Thai heartthrob Paradorn Srichaphan who recently returned to the world circuit and he adds power and spice to their team. Dashing Swede and former Wimbledon Champion Stefan Edberg brings his serve and volley style and quiet charisma to an accomplished Team Europe. And Team Russia packs big gun Marat Safin, although the handsome Russian will end his official ATP career this year.

The new team format will feature women’s & men’s singles and mixed doubles matches over four days of action packed tennis at Victoria Park.

TPA President Ian Wade said “We’re thrilled by the quality of our field and our unique format, a first in tennis history we believe, it should be highly competitive and a lot of fun. We can truly say we’ll be seeing “stars and heroes,” and fans will smile in anticipation at the new twist in our line up. It’s terrific, I’m happy and I hope our many sponsors and patrons are too.”

The Hong Kong Tennis Classic 2010 will receive funding from the Mega Events Fund, and this support has enabled the TPA to bring a host of big names to Hong Kong. The event will also continue to be supported by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Information Services Department.

Mr. Wade underlined his thanks to the different government agencies and sponsors, “Hong Kong can be proud it is bringing this cast of stars to its shores. The Mega Events Fund has given the local community, and Hong Kong’s profile an immense international boost, we’re proud of our city and we thank the Mega Events Fund deeply for their belief and support. We are also indebted to the LCSD and the ISD who back us so well every year. To all our sponsors we also say ‘thank you’, and especially Canon HongKong Co., Ltd, Cathay Pacific Airways and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. This is Hong Kong operating at its best.”

With the unique quality of the field, the TPA will appoint a travel agent to develop tourist packages to include air travel, hotel accommodation & tickets to the event and to promote tennis to fans in the region. The TPA will also work with the Hong Kong Tourism Board to promote the event to overseas visitors. Mr. Wade added “the tourist packages will be attractively priced and contain elements to make them especially appealing.”

Tickets for the Hong Kong Tennis Classic will be on sale from the beginning of December. Details will be announced in due course.

Why are you rolling your eyes? That would suit you just fine if she loses early . You always bitch and complain about anything Venus...you secretly love her don't you :hearts:?

 How long did you have to dig deep to find that old post of mine?

Even Venus' biggest fans are complaining by now about her paricipation at that exhibition so I think I'm in good company. :D

Yeah, it's really ridiculous, escpecially considering that the prize money already went up for the big WTA tourneys this year.

Venus will also play Hong Kong and "exhibition" her way to the AO (where she will probably lose early again ).

From Caro's Forum: Goto Barbados next week...

The young Danish tennis player starts with training relatively quietly, so the damage does not pop up again.

"She starts up with jogging and then she plays about a half hour of tennis each day at first. Next week we go to Barbados, where she will get a real tennis training program again," says Piotr Wozniacki.

Where did you here about this?

from justine. She was supposed to play players like kournikova in dubai but then she heard in early july that she was going to face safina, kuznetsova and ivanovic.
That radically changes the preperation for an exhibition, that's when she made the decision that she was going to train hard and called carlos she wanted to look towards a comeback to proffesional tennis again.

We don't know much else about the exhibition yet though...

Wozniacki in for tennis battle with Serena this weekend in Barbados.

11/24/2009

International tennis superstar Caroline Wozniacki arrived at the Grantley Adams International Airport yesterday just days before she she is scheduled to do battle with Serena Williams at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.

The world number 4 was all smiles as she greeted the press at the Grace Adams Suite yesterday and noted that it was always a dream of hers to come to Barbados.

“I was really looking forward to coming here and spending some time hear. I have heard some wonderful things of Barbados and I am looking forward to exploring the island,” said Wozniacki.

Wozniacki noted that Williams was the first person she heard talking about the match-up and then she was approached by her agent. According to her when she heard it was going to be in Barbados she jumped at the opportunity.

She is coming off of an hamstring injury she picked up at the BGL Luxembourg Open, forcing her to retire hurt from that tournament. However, the Danish superstar is confident that everything is great.

“I am feeling really good now; I had a lot of days off. I started to practice last week and now I feel good, I feel fit. Yeah I am ready,” said Wozniacki.

Playing against current world number 1 Serena Williams is not going to be easy but Wozniacki is up for the challenge.

“She is a great player and has a great personality as well a really nice girl. I am really looking forward to seeing her here,” said Wozniacki.

She turned pro in July 2005 and has won six World Tennis Association Tour singles and was runner up in this year’s US Open.

She should be thinking about winning an AO before winning a stupid Exho no matter the prize money. Since her abdominal injury, she has played Hong Kong EVERY year and then at the AO she has only made it to the QFs once. Hong Kong = BAD for Venus.

Serena and Caroline thrill thousands

11/29/2009

By Alan Harris

Serena Williams is still the undisputed Queen of women’s tennis; well at least in the hearts of Barbadians.

The 28-year-old world No. 1 appeared in vintage form at last night’s LIME ‘Tennis pon De Rock’ exhibition at the Wildey Gymnasium, where she opposed world No. 4, 19-year-old Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. Both players were well received by the large crowd and throughout the match, screams of ‘Let’s go Serena’ and ‘Let’s go Caroline’ could be heard echoing throughout the Gym.

Serena, easily the more physically dominant of the two players, took full control from the opening game and never looked back. Though fighting off a slight cold, she was her usual self, serving with a vengeance while punishing anything short from her younger opponent. Wozniacki, who is no slouch either, desperately scampered for her returns and tried to use her pin-point placement to her advantage. Still she had no reply for Williams.

Both players held their first service games at love, but when Serena got going, Wozniacki didn’t have much answer for her power. Breaking her opponent at 3-2, and then again at 5-4, Serena comfortably put away Wozniacki 6-4 in the only set that was played on the night. “They were such a good crowd,” a beaming Serena told the Barbados Advocate after the match. “There was a lot of support for Caroline, and there as a lot of support for me, so it was a good night. This island has been 100 times better than any of my expectations and I really think I have found my second home.”

Wozniacki, a 2009 US Open Finalist, was also in high spirits after the match. “It was really fun and the crowd was amazing”, she said. “It’s always fun to play Serena and all the support I got out there was great. I think it is an amazing island and I love it here.”

Also in action and giving a good account of himself last night, was Barbados’ highest ranked player Haydn Lewis. Though losing to American Jeff Tarango 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, Lewis was a hit with the crowd and was a true testament to the calibre of the tennis which exists on the island. Showing all present just what he was made of, Lewis smashed 8 aces during the contest and after losing the first set 6-4, he dug deep and rallied to take the second 3-6, consequently forcing a ‘first to ten points’ final set.

Unfortunately for Lewis, he was hard done on the final point of the match when the ball clipped the net and fell on his side while he was still three feet behind the baseline. Before then, everyone on hand thought the 23-year-old would have got the better of his far more experienced opponent. “It was a good game and as I have had said before, I just wanted to put on a good show,” Lewis said still dripping with sweat. “Forget what the score was, it was just great that so many people turned out to watch good tennis. I never played in front of a crowd like this before, so at the start I was a little bit nervous, but when I got going and found my rhythm in the second set, the match got better for me. He (Tarango) is very crafty, that’s why he was once in the Top 10, so it was just a privilege to play against someone who had achieved so much in the sport of tennis.”

International recording artist Common, His Excellency Ambassador Ryan Brathwaite, wife of Prime Minister David Thompson, Mara Thompson, Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy, Minister of Sport, Esther Byer-Suckoo, and Opposition Leader Mia Mottley were among those who attended this truly successful and historic event. Barry Gale, Director of B.I.T.E (Barbados Invitational Tennis Exhibition), said he was thrilled with turnout and all the hard work which was put in by the organisers had paid off. “I am very excited and very pleased”, Gale said. “I think the crowd support was absolutely amazing and you could feel the electric atmosphere out there. It was hard work but truly rewarding and I think the Barbadian crowd really enjoyed it.”

Davenport Added to Baltimore Line-Up

It was also recently announced that three-time Grand Slam champion and former world No.1 Lindsay Davenport, who recently took more time off the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour to have her second child, will participate in the event.

"Lindsay is a future Hall of Famer. She ranks alongside Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert as one of only four players who have been ranked year-end No.1 on four occasions," Shriver added. "I can guarantee all of the matches will be ultra competitive."

umm I'm not hating, but based on her pictures, I predict Maria will crash out early AO 2010. She looks fat and pudgy, which seems to suggest that she hasn't been keeping up with fitness. Given that her footwork has gotten so much worse since her comback, getting fatter is not a good idea. She's a gonna have the movement of Lindsey but much more unforced errors.

Yeah, I suspect that is because of Dubai's actual financial crisis :o It is a shame because I would loved to see Justine playing against Ana, Sveta and Dinara. Instead, Justine will play Petrova in Egypt on the 12th.

I am glad you are not hating. It sounds like constructive criticism. I was kind of surprised when I saw this picture of her:

But when she is on court, in a tennis outfit----I am not sure fat and pudgy are the words to describe her.

Maria Kirilenko, who formed a partnership with Dinara Safina for Russia in the 2006 Fed Cup, will this time partner World No 5 Elena Dementieva to take on two of Asia's best - Zheng Jie of China and Sania Mirza of India -- in the third edition of the Showdown of Champions at the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam.

For the Showdown of Champions 2009, the format will see the doubles match between Russia and Asia on the first night. Two singles matches will be held on the second night, the first between Maria and Sania, followed by the clash between Zheng Jie and Elena.
