well done fran.

but seriously a shittastic way to finish a turd year for the WTA, fran *i cant win a title* loses only 3 games in a $1 million tournament final to olga *braindead ballbashing* govortsova. i feel like crying.

Fran is a great player, if she was this solid more than 2-3 tournaments a year she would have reached the top 10 a long time ago, but she always lacked mental strenghts. I hope next year she can build up on this fantastic end of 2009, she will turn 30 soon, but also Silvia Farina had her best years around this age, and Fran is in great shape so she can still make the top 10, please believe it !!

For the whole week Schiavone played tennis that was worthy of such a big title. Of course the scorelines are wider than they would have been, if she had some real competition, but she deserved it nonetheless by trashing them all. :worship:

Looks even worse, when you consider that last year all major players also competed at the Olympics. The Asian circuit should be reserved for 2nd tier players. The top players from Europe and the US simply don´t want to be there.

congrats francesca on your first big title and 2nd overall :)

but what a weak draw :o in my whole time as a tennis fan (since mid 90's) this has been by far the worst fall season i've ever witnessed

i hope the wta does something about it, it can't remain like this........surely?

Govortsova faced much the same problems Alona Bondarenko did in the SF, with the added difficulty of just not being as good as Alona, and being less adept at handling Schiavone's junk. The score ended up going much the same way. Early lead by Schiavone, big battle halfway through the 1st, blowout from then on.

I sometimes complain about how Govortsova is sort of a WTAW/TF byword for worthless hack, and that such an elegant player, not entirely devoid of game, shouldn't be completely ignored the way she is in here - but her pitiful performance in the 2nd set, regardless of its causes (if she was indeed that injured, she should have ret.), won't win her any new fans. I suppose that, even if Govortsova had played her best throughout, her Azarenka lite game just wouldn't cut it today though.

Another solid display of all-court tennis from Schiavone. The surface is simply ideal for her - slow enough to make it next to impossible for the average baseliner to hit through her or even force errors out of her, and low bouncing enough for her own serve and junk to be highly effective. It's not just Schiavone's versatility, resourcefulness and shot selection - she also has the ability to implement changes to her game plan during a match. Govortsova isn't troubled by serves aimed at her body - so Schiavone serves out wide to both sides. Govortsova's forward movement is poor, and she's clueless at the net - so Schiavone brings here there. I probably don't appreciate Schiavone's game as much as I should, perhaps because it ends up being essentially defensive. It was Schiavone's consistency, and not the cute stuff, that earned her this title.

First set was rather tightly contested but since then Franny :rocker:

Didn't realize it at the time, but that one excellent game with about 25 points(Schiavone leading 3-2), was the turning point of the match. Govortsova started missing the FH after that and it was over.

So happy for Fran. And to all the people saying this should have never happened, just be happy for her. Fran has been long overdue for another title. 2 titles and like 8 or 9 runner ups. I slept through this match today but I can't wait to see a repeat on TC. :)

For all those saying that Schiavone's victory shows how far the WTA has gone downhill, it should be remembered that she was in the final here 4 years ago when she beat Dementieva, Kuznetsova and Mauresmo.. :)

She saved this tournament in essence.. :p

FRAN!!! :D Hoepfully can get back to the Top 20 and get back to being the best Italian like she has been for so long before Pennetta's highly suprising rise. (And a rise that shows up the weakness of the WTA)

Really?! Amazing. :D

After her woeful start to the season she was in terminal decline, just goes to show what a hard-working and resourceful player she is! Shame there aren't more players like Fran around really.. Somebody with an entertaining game AND personality is rare nowadays. Bit like high-quality matches. :tape:

The Fran Machine must be jealous of Flavia's top 10 acchievement. ;) Really it is quite impressive when you think about it. Back in March or April she wasn't even in the top 50 and now she is closing in on the top 15. I only wish Safarova could pull off an epic climb like that. :/
