Surely she is the best player who has never reached the top 10.

She has the best one handed backhand on tour (until Justine comes back that is).
Alona has some good shots but not enough to put Francesca on the defensive.
When there's depth and pace on an opponents shots, that's when Francesca loses time.

Francy! :banana:

A slight hiccough in the second set when Fran threw away a 5-2 lead (maybe with a set-point) but the last set was complete domination :drool:

On form, Schiavone is always going to be the favourite against Alona because she doesn't have the weapons to hit through Fran, who has been defending and moving so well this week.

Now watch Francy losing to Govortsova in the final :tape:

What great play from Fran Fran. Let's hope she can win the final. In my opinion she's the best Italian player out there but only 1-8 in finals or something like that. This title would be a great collection. Good luck in the final and finally win one!

In other news can we discuss Alona's sex grunt? I've never heard one so sensuous before.

They need to cancel Moscow. This is embarassing with matches having less than 200 fans at the event. Look at all the empty seats for the Schiavone match, yet it was a semifinals match. Tennis is all about sponsors except for about 6 events that can pay the players prize, but this is awful. Luxembourg is a small country with around half Million people and they supported all the rounds of their tournament.

Francesca has been excellent this week. It seems impossible to hit through her. She had the perfect reply to each shot Alona tried to play aggressively. As a result, Alona didn't know what to do and started to lose her patience. This slow surface certainly favours Francesca's game but it's hard not to be admirative of such a beautiful tennis. There is nothing girls with medium power like Bondarenko or Kirilenko can do against her.
Good luck in the final! Hope it will be against Alisa :)

Well done to Francesca.

But what a :zzz: final for a tier 2, or whatever it's called nowadays: Schiavone vs Kleybanoa/ Govortsova :tape:

There were at least 2,000 at the stands.

Out of interest, is Moscow still a Tier I?

(Are they even called 'Tier I' anymore - what's all this 'Premier' nonsense?)

It's Tier II now, so it's been downgraded but still supposed to be on the higher tier. Along with Warsaw it's been one of the weakest major tournaments this year though, which is a shame as it usually had a strong field. Just so you know--

Mandatory/Premier 5 = Tier I
Premier = Tier II
International = Tier III/IV

Oh Alona :sad: was starting to find her range from 5-2 to 5-4, and Schiavone narrowly avoided a comeback.
The second set though from Schiavone :eek: simply amazing making virtually no errors, slicing anything aggressive back, resounding victory for her in the end.

When there's depth and pace on an opponents shots, that's when Francesca loses time.

She's also capable of wacking in multiple aces at 110 plus or 3 DF in a service game depending on the day - plus she can break, and has broken, almost anyone, but can also lose her serve to lots of people she probably shouldn't. Very much a case of when she's in zone she is deadly.She has had difficulty this year nailing people in the third which used to be another trademark but doing it in two is a better way all around........

Schiavone plays an appealing, flairsome, versatile game with butt ugly strokes, while Alona plays a one-dimensional, limited game with fluid, pretty strokes.

Alona doesn't win free points off her serve, and would always find it nearly impossible to hit through Schiavone from the baseline, so all she could do was to either crank up the pace of the rallies and hope for Schiavone to throw in a few shanks, or to open angles and hope that her older opponent wouldn't be able to keep up. Neither worked. Good surge when she was down late in the 1st, but playing so well for 2-3 games only to lose the set in the end must have been disheartening, and Alona just collapsed.
