When the rankings are released on Monday, October 26, Safina will be ranked No.1 and therefore the top seed at the season-ending event. After holding the top ranking for 25 consecutive weeks (April 20 to October 11), she will replace Serena Williams at the top when points earned at Doha last year come off. In 2009, Safina has earned more ranking points than anyone else.

Serena instead of Dinara and I am fine with that.

I don't like the ideas of seedings though. I'd prefer Serena-Dinara-Wozniacki-Venus  so both of my anti-favourites(Safina, Wozniacki) would be preferably knocked in round robin.

You mean 0-6? She was there last year.

How embarassing will it be when Venus finds a way to play Pavlyuchenkova and loses? :scared:

it's not that important, I mean even if two favourites are in 1 group, they both can go to the finals

but i don't want a REAL weak group like
Safina, Wozniaki, Azarenka, JJ or Venus (both can show good form, would clearly advance)

The sad part about this is none of them really seems to be on form as a standout favorite, so whatever group they're in at this point doesn't really matter anymore

Dinara - Daniela Safina...nuff said.

Serena - probably gonna retire in the first match, and someone will stand by to fill in for the prize money

Sveta - too unpredictable

Caro - "injured"

Lena - has not been relevant since Wimbledon semis

Vika - don't remember the last time she advanced passed the second round of any tournament

Venus - she's not defending this title, that's all I know.

JJ - All I know is it's gonna be a dramatic finish but not in a good way.

Group 1:Dinara Safina,Svetlana Kuznetsova,Victoria Azarenka, Venus Williams

Group 2: Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic

I think these two groups are fantastic, I mean the great rivalries of this year, Serena vs Dementieva, and don't forget that fantastic Sydney match between Serena and Caroline. Serena vs Jankovic, the USOPEN final, they always had great rallies. And also the drama of the Cincinnati match between Dementieva and Jankovic.
Last but not least the fantastic rivalry between Wozniacki and Dementieva!

Second group, well during the claycourt season Kuznetsova and Safina were each others biggest rivals, Venus vs Svetlana, always amazing matches with Kuznetsova playing extremely well long time since that happened. And Venus vs Safina at Rome, okay forget that Wimbledon semi-final, etc.
I'd like to see Venus vs Azarenka, since Azarenka has matured more since their last meeting!

So Ladies and Gentlemen, I think these should be the groups, you can make great previews of their matches based on the matches they played this year!

As long as Venus & Serena are in the same group so they can control the group and reach the semifinals. Option 4 (Serena, Dementieva, Woz, Jankovic)looks great but due to the fact Serena & Venus are also playing YEC doubles and Fed Cup Finals, I voted option 3 (Serena, Venus, Woz, Azarenka). :)

This has nothing to do with elena at all. This has to do with 4 players who have shown they can win big while NONE in the other group have. This is quality vs. non-quality. I'm just incredibly disappointed that we're gonna have a shitty yec to end this shitty year quality-wise. Players from the white group will probably gain points by getting to the semifinal in which they don't belong at all. Screwing up the rankings even further. I wouldn't be surprised if wozniacki ended the year #3 and safina #1 now for example.

It's just mindboggling how things can turn out for the worse. Hopefully a mouthwatering 2010 will make up for this total fiasco 2009 ended to be. The year that made 2008 look like top quality tennis. :o

You should be looking forward to quality matches in the "quality" group then. "Non-quality" group should produce some dramatic matches, too.

Yeah well, this is one of those times where i feel like i just have to bring it hard...

Safina has done nothing since wimbledon, she's shown she's mentally out of it after the french open final. Slowly but slowly she's losing shape but still is no.1. She doesn't have what it takes to win on the big stage.

Wozniacki has done well in the last months, but i think we can all agree it's rediculous that she actually has good chances now to take home the year-end #3 position. To say she has what it takes to be a top3 just isn't the case at all here. Her absolute best doesn't come close to what the other group has to offer.

Azarenka has been getting tough draws in the last half year, but she's underperformed when she's had the chances to perform. She's had tough losses and quality started dropping.

Jankovic shouldn't be here. This year normally wouldn't be a top8 performance, but she hang on and got here because there wasn't anyone better. All the credit to her for still getting here, but what we've seen from her all year just wasn't good enough.

This makes this YEC very disappointing and depressing to me after the tough year we've had... I can't expect much now with these groups, i just can't.

Don't be so negative. All the players earned to be at the SEC. The seeding is done according to players' results during the 2009 season, as it should be.

Luck of the draw decided seeds 2,3,5&7 will be in the same group. Enjoy watching those matches and if you don't appreciate players from other group - just don't watch them.

Sorry but i just can't see anything positive in this... I've actually been hopeful since i love watching the YEC every year. I think it's a crucial part of the year. And i will definetly be watching the white group as well, since i want to see how they do. I'm too much of a tennisfan for that. But i just had to get the frustration out since this year has been so majorly disappointing almost all-round. I'm someone who loves seeing quality tennis and was used to seeing quality tennis for many years, and now we have 2 seasons in a row that have been pretty much disappointing and below the bar compared to those years. I feel like quality has been decreasing over the last 2 years. There are just too little highlights to make this a memorable year, and this yec won't help.

In 2010 the bar just HAS to be lifted again. We need better performances.

I think you are being very unfair to these girls.

Safina(3titles), has won more points this year then any one else has. She won more then Serena who can't seem to get her act together to do any thing at a non-slam. So she should be the number one seed.

Wozniacki(3 Titles)- Has was done ok for the first part of the season, being a strong top 8-10 player, and her run at the U.S open. That was easy run because my fav and your fav lost in the 2nd round along with every other top player in that part of the draw, but she did have one good match and took out Sveta. So she should have her ranking.

Azarenka(3tiltes)- you are completely right about Azarenka, great start to the year, and some hard loses.

Jankovic(2titles)- This year for JJ has been a hard one. She has not done what we know she can do. Still she should be in the YEC, since that is what a 8th ranked player is. They play great some times and suck other times.

And if you really look at the other side it is not better.

Serena-(2 titles) She has won two Slams but has lost before the 1/4finals 5 time and not reach the Simi 7 times. She has lost in the first round two times this year. She has been very up and down in her game this year.

Kuznetsova(3titles)-Has won One Slam and two other titles. Other then that has been very below par all year. Still a great year for her only because of the French, but I would not say she has played her best tennis this year.

Elena(3titles)- Started the year great and since then has slowly dropped in form, but for the most part have been more made it further in tournaments then the two slam winners.

Venus(2titles)- Had a very good first part of the season, but has not played all that well since Miami other then Wimb.

My point is All the top 8 sucks this year, no group is really harder then the other, it just one group have more big names then the other. There should be a few great matches but no side will have a ton.

Yes, i agree the top8 has been bad all around. But saying no group isn´t really harder then the other isn´t true. When it comes down to the crunch, all the players who have had the experience to win big titles are in 1 group, can you honestly see ANY of the players in the other group lifting this title if 1 of the 4 players of the other group is playing well? Will any of the white group be able to take one of them down in the YEC-final? I just don't see it happening, not based on their careers, as well as this years performances. They would all have to surpass themselves by a MILE.

When it's time to bring it they just don't perform or aren't rdy to perform yet, and that's what we are seeing in the white group. And that makes it sad knowing the players who ARE able to win this are bunched up in 1 group.

Like you said, i don't expect great matches, but i was hoping for the contenders to be at least spread out in the groups. Which was of course, too much to ask looking at this year.
