Yuliya Kalabina's serve is not that bad really. The young lass with the "look back" serve is actually not that far away from a good action, however she does not have a good understanding of the grip and has to double check it, first when looking down, then she has to check her arm and grip position after taking the arm back. Obviously she does not yet trust herself to find the right grip and position by feel. This would tend to lessen the security of her grip, which resulted in her losing her grip on the racquet in the earlier clip. However, overall I find this serve endearing, particularly with the way her ponytail bounces around as she looks back and forward. She has a nice deep javelin position, good leg drive, a decent amount of power, although she does not seem able to hit a proper topspin second serve. It is like the serve of someone still learning to serve. Has some problems to be sure, but definitely not the worst I have ever seen.

Antonella Serra Zanetti's serve is quite horrible. She breaks the serve into sections, pausing between each section. She is already beginning to bend forward as she hits it. It's hard to describe... see for yourself.

Vitalia's serve is not good at all either, despite it's deceptive smoothness. You probably need to have a certain amount of tennis technical experience to see the extent of her serving woes, since she does not pause or have a noticeably "hitch". But if you watch closely you can see that she has no "throwing" action, and instead "bowls" the serve in a wide arc, essentially pulling the racquet over herself rather than throwing it. The arm never bends properly before being straightened. She basically gets very little help at all from her elbow straightening, which is a major source of power for good serves. That shot at 0:13 which is shown in slow motion at 0:33 is not a high volley- that is her attempt at a smash. She only manages to hit okay serves because her wrist is quite loose, she uses her shoulder turn well, and fortunately just before contact she does bend her elbow just a little bit and then straightens it. She serves at 1:05, slow motion (from quite a forgiving angle I must say) at 1:10. Luckily for her her groundies are much better than her serve.
dy2gDwVrvs4

There are or have been other stranger serves on the WTA tour to be sure. But as a whole such things will slowly disappear from the tour as the level increases and the players improve their techniques.

Also, surely that man's serve is merely a practical joke?

Voracova's is only weird because of the pause. If she didn't pause like that, it'd just look like a pretty basic abbreviated service motion.

This serve is not bad. In my opinion, it is not a tournament-ready serve, but it is on its way there (with the right coaching)

She bypasses the entire first half of the motion up until the 'trophy position' and merely starts from here.
This is ok to teach a beginner the serve without getting into the full motion, if the student has trouble with the timing and rhythm.

However to start from here means you are missing the first part of the kinetic chain and consequently, missing a LOT of easy power.
The initial 'rocking part' of the service motion, serves to begin the kinetic chain starting from the feet. As you perform this, you move your body weight to the front foot with a knee bend, while the chest opens, with the hitting shoulder lower than the tossing shoulder.

See pic below:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2404/2055361768_9627200c85.jpg

You are in this position for less than a split-second. In this instant, you are fully 'loaded' and ready to transfer all that energy up and forward from the legs to the shoulder, wrist and finally the ball.
If you do this right, you will hit big serves and you will not feel like you are exerting yourself.

The girl in the clip has to do MORE WORK to get a big ball on her serve because she is missing all this free power. That is why she is overswinging.

Hmm . . I was thinking the thread was about "weird" (as in funny looking) serves, not "bad" (as in ineffective for the player) serves. Bartoli's is weird but it is an effective serve - for her.

Seriously. I do not understand at all her new service motion. What is the intention? Reduce pain? Does she have a shoulder/back problem? Confuse the opponent? More speed? No! More consistency? She's already extremely consistent just spinning it in. Someone needs to ask her about it.

I think I've read on here that Errani has right shoulder injury that's affected her career. Something about her serve used to be better than it is but after some shoulder trouble she had to change some things so now it's worse. Ask an Italian poster on here, I know some of them know :p

I'm guessing it's changed now because it's affecting her shoulder somehow. But just a guess.

But the way she bends her arm up behind her head to prepare for the toss and serve does not seem as though it would be good for the shoulder either.
