Yanina looked tired for a portion of this match. In the ist set she jumped to a 3-0 lead, only to have Kvitova win the next 3 games. Yanina was hitting all her shots down the middle in the ist 6 games of the first set. Yanina woke up in game 7 and starting playing her usual corners game, applying pressure. Wickmayer won the last three games of the first set with 2 unreturned serves in game 9.

Yanina appeared sluggish in the ist 3 games of the 2nd set trailing 2-1, but the key games was game 8 with Yanina leading 4-3 on service for game 8. Yanina trailed 0-30, but Yanina stepped into a two backhand shot down the left sideline for a winner. That shot would carry Yanina the rest of the way. Both players held in their next service game with Wickmayer winning 6-3,6-4.

Wow what great news for Belgian tennis - Henin coming back, Clijsters playing great, Flipkins also doing well and now Wickmayeeeeeer :rolleyes::rolleyes: (Is it true you have to roll your eyes in order to get the pronounciation of her name right?) coming good on her potential. They'll have one hell of a fed cup squad next season!

first USO SF with cakewalk draw

now two Mini Mouse titles barely beating anyone

She defeated #11 Flavia Pennetta. And another seed on the way. Petra Kvitova was on fire ousting Radwanska easily the day before. All straight-set matches. Enough for an International title .
(I wonder why I even bother replying to one of your :help: posts.)

lol, I was wondering about that too! on the radio, they asked her about her new coach, and she didn't want to say his name :)
only that she'll decide soon if she'll continue to play with him and that he's doing great so far!

she really is a great player: nice strokes, mentally seems more estable now, and is an amazing athlete...her Estoril Open title really was the motivation she needed to finally show her true potential.

impressive year from Wickmayer-winning a title on clay and now on indoor hardcourt, as well as reaching the uso sf and giving sharapova a tough time on grass in Birmingham. Looks like Yanina can play on all surfaces :yeah:

Expected result - the better player won.

Wickmayer has about 80% of Kvitova's raw power, yet moves almost twice as fast. It's a no-brainer.

Still, I find it difficult to be all that enthusiastic about Wickmayer's game. She plays a power game, yes, but it's solid and generic rather than flairsome or spectacular. It's no coincidence, I think, that she is yet to score a big win over a top player.

True, but her time will come. She's pushed a few of them.

Nina may not have a very flamboyant/flashy game, but she's shown tremendous progress. I remember watching her against Daniela last year/2 years ago (I dont remember) and she wasn't as fast as she is now. What I love about her is that on court, she's eager to play and shows a lot of excitement!

Who is her new (and very cute) coach?
just read, the guy's called Billy Wilkinson, 29-year old american who coached Akiko Morigami back in 2007. Yanina will decide after Bali if she'll continue to work with him.
I wouldn't mind if she does... :p
