17-year-old Veronica Cepede is the first Paraguayan woman since Rossana de los Rios to reach the final of a WTA or ITF tournament!
She will play the final of $10,000 Bauru in Brazil tomorrow against Brazilian Vivian Segnini. :D

Veronica is a very sweet and humble girl and a very gifted tennis player. She can generate a solid amount of power, a great forehand and good mental strength too, and although she can become frustrated with herself, this sometimes works for her. She has been as high as #12 in juniors. Her best win to date was over Catalina Castano at Fed Cup this year. :)

Currently ranked 1000, but this is just her second tournament of the year.

Her path to the final this week:
Final: Cepede Royg vs. Vivian Segnini(4)
Semifinal: Cepede Royg def. Emilia Yorio(5) 62 62
Quarterfinal: Cepede Royg def. Fernanda Faria 60 60
Second Round: Cepede Royg def. Nathalia Rossi(1) 60 63
First Round: Cepede Royg def. Andressa Garcia 36 63 63

Great to see a Paraguayan coming up the rankings!!

Nice to see you guys here! :D

Here's a pic of her with the Bauru trophy:
http://www.ultimahora.com/adjuntos/imagenes/000/154/0000154098.jpg

This is really great news. Not only is it wonderful she has won her first title, these were even her first victories of the year, after a disappointing time on the Junior circuit (7 match losing streak). She has silenced her critics, and shown a great level of maturity - no signs of nerves in her first final. It just shows that she has progressed dramatically all year, despite the losses, and this is why she shows great promise.

As the Paraguayan press is saying, "It is so that the title gained by Veronica not only came to shut up those dissident mouths, but, most importantly, it returned to print new forces to her in the development process that she is experimenting. It is known, in this stage, that the results must be analyzed with much moderation, because what can seem a failure or one " bad racha" , in terms of results, can well be seedtime of a successful future. And that is exactly what is happening with Veronica. To work to lose and to lose to grow. Thus the metamorphosis could be transformed through where she has had to become the present number one of Paraguay and number two of South America in juniors. This period (2009) was necessary to fortify the roots of her growth and to progress like a tennis player, always thinking not about today, nor tomorrow, but in the day after tomorrow. A vision in the long term. Time to the time. Who advances with tranquillity, will arrive far. Those seem to be the paradigms of Veronica in this 2009.

Now, it will be a moment for celebrating, but, also, quickly to retake the work and to continue striving by far professionalism. That is the method that allowed her to arrive to where she is today, that is to say, among the elite of junior South American tennis. The important thing will be that the good work with her grounded feet stays. Veronica was not worse by not to have won a match in all 2009 and now that left champion either is not the best one. She is the same, only that with more maturity, a new landmark in its race and, most important, with a great projection to future. The results will continue arriving. It is thing of time and work."

Sorry for the rough translation. Vero is now in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and will play #2 seed Andrea Koch in the first round. Buena Suerte Vero!!

Oh I forgot to mention, Veronica (and that photo) are featured on the main pages of the most important Paraguayan newspapers. This is great considering Paraguay has had some good results in sports this week (and you know how football mad Paraguayans are). I don't know if you guys remember Ramon Delgado (he beat Agassi and Sampras once) who, on the verge of retirement, won his first challenger in 2 years in Asuncion last weekend as well. Paraguay deserve a new tennis star, and Veronica definitely seems to be the most promising since Rossana. Even the press call Veronica "Negra"...she seems like maybe she has Guaraní blood? Royg sounds like a Guaraní name.

Also, yes...i remember Ramon. I've seen him play quite a bit Team Tennis on TV over the past few years. He still has a really solid game and an amazing serve :worship:. I've heard he's had shoulder problems, so its good to see he won a Challenger last week :D. Maybe he'll give it one more try in 2010 :bounce:

I was thinking the same thing...very nice trophy for a $10K!
Ramon has been playing Team Tennis?? What is that? I hope he'll play one more year next year too!

Vero in $10K Santa Cruz this week:

Semifinals: Cepede Royg vs. (5) Jara-Lozano
Quarterfinals: Cepede Royg def. Pirovani 63 63
Second Round: Cepede Royg def. (WC) Miranda 63 36 61
First Round: Cepede Royg def. (LL) Balige 61 60

A solid week so far. :D Jara-Lozano should be difficult today though. Hopefully Vero can come through in straight sets and be fresh for a final. Buena Suerte!

Some things she said earlier today about her last couple of weeks and the match against Jara-Lozano today:
:hearts: She seems confident...another win here would see her almost into the top 600 I think!

Its good to see her having another solid week :).

Team Tennis was created by Billie Jean King. There are about 8 or so teams that consist of both male and female players. They don't play full sets ( usually to 5 ). Its pretty fun and the courts are really cool. Here's a You Tube vid on a match =)

Thanks Heath...I think i've seen that before...is that the format where there was a big argument between McEnroe, Poutchkova, Huber I think? I can't remember what happened but someone tried to hit the volleyer on the serve...it was a mixed doubles match and sounds like that could have been Team Tennis.

Veronica is into the final in Santa Cruz!!
She defeated #5 seed Lucia Jara-Lozano 3-6 6-2 6-3 today and will take on #1 seed Vivian Segnini once again in the final! Hopefullly the result will be the same!

For the first time in history, Paraguay will host the Fed Cup next year!!! :D

Haha...i didn't notice the shape of the trophies...you're right! Looks like I was a bit confused with the scheduling, $10K Asuncion doesn't start until November 16, and Veronica will compete in $10K Itajai this week!

Here is her draw:
DUARTE, Ana-Clara (BRA) 1 vs BARBOSA-COSTA SILVA, Gabriella (BRA)
CEPEDE ROYG, Veronica (PAR) vs WC HADDAD, Stefania (BRA)
WC GUIMARAES BUENO, Flavia (BRA) vs COSTA MELGAR, Cecilia (CHI)
Q SILVA, Camila (CHI) vs SEGNINI, Vivian (BRA) 6
SALUT, Aranza (ARG) 3 vs WC ANDREAZZA, Giulia (BRA)
Q GARCIA, Priscila (BRA) vs CHENG, Natalia (BRA)
BRITO, Fernanda (CHI) vs GONCALVES, Paula Cristina (BRA)
GARCIA, Andressa (BRA) vs FURLANETTO, Vanesa (ARG) 8

CASTIBLANCO DUARTE, Karen Emilia (COL) 7 vs Q GUENO, Barbara (BRA)
Q BARAN, Ana (BRA) vs LOTUFFO, Natasha (BRA)
Q MIRO, Isabela (BRA) vs Q SOUZA, Karina (BRA)
HERMENEGILDO, Fernanda (BRA) vs BUA, Tatiana (ARG) 4
VAISEMBERG, Roxane (BRA) 5 vs FARIA, Fernanda (BRA)
ALBUQUERQUE, Monique (BRA) vs Q SEGUEL, Daniela (CHI)
WC CÉ, Gabriela (BRA) vs Q LASKUTOVA, Viktoria (RUS)
BORGES, Flavia (BRA) vs AUROUX, Mailen (ARG) 2

I don't think Ana Clara Duarte is in the best of form however Salut and Furlanetto are ones to watch out for. Auroux is also enjoying a good year so she would be difficult should they face in the final! Never know what to expect with Vaisemberg either. Best of luck Vero!! Hope she'll just get at least a few wins under her belt so she'll feel confident going into her home tournament next week, where I expect there'll be a lot of pressure on her...not that there should be! Anyway one week at a time.

She certainly has a great chace this week in La Serena! The only major threats are Koch-Benvenuto and Demichelli, both of which she beat in straight sets last week.

She won today 6-3 7-6 over a Peruvian wildcard. :) I guess she was probably a little tired, only a day or two to rest in between the final in Lima and here. She also won the doubles with Brito over the #2 seeds today. She should at least make the Semifinals and I think that would put her ranking around #560!

:yeah:  Ruthless. She's also in the doubles final with Fernanda Brito.

Her win/loss record this year is 22-5. And two of those losses she nearly won, one was against Dubois in Fed Cup. It's really been a great transitional year for Veronica, she has improved out of sight even just since August. :worship: It will be interesting to see how she goes next year making a larger dent on the tour, whether she can find the same success on hardcourts and at a higher level. Of course, she is taking one thing at a time and couldn't really be doing much better than she is right now. :)

Her ranking is now #659 and could be as high as #622 if she wins the title this week.

Excellent Fed Cup performance from Veronica :yeah:

Veronica Cepede-Royg def. Maria Fernanda Alves 1-6 6-4 6-3
Veronica Cepede-Royg def. Maria Paula Deheza 6-3 6-1
Veronica Cepede-Royg def. Camila Silva 6-1 6-2

A shame Paraguay only finished third even with Veronica's victories, but it was a strong performance nonetheless :D

Then a couple of days ago she was announced by the Paraguayan Olympic Committee as the official flagbearer of the Paraguayan delegation for the 2010 Odesur Games (South American Games) to be held in Medellin, Colombia, starting March 19. This is a huge honour for her as Paraguay will be sending athletes for 23 out of 26 events. 5,000 athletes in total are expected for the games. Well done Vero :) Good luck in Brazil!

I'm not too sure yet either! I have only seen her play a couple of times, at the Fed Cup last year in Canada where she beat Castano and Vaisemberg, but lost to Dubois. She has a pretty solid game; hits quite hard- hits winners. Her serve isn't (or at least wasn't) too much of a weapon, but she's been working at improving it. I'm not sure if I could say who in the top 100 she plays like yet, but she has some variety in her game, she can hit angles and drop shots, and she has a great lob too. :)

Yes.I should add that her forehand is her best weapon she hits plenty of winners with it,her weakness is her footwork and defense.
Those matches that you mention were played on carpet but when she plays on red clay she plays similiar to Stosur (of course not the serve of Sam :p )

I keep refreshing the ITF site waiting for her final result of 2010, fingers crossed she will finish on a high with a victory over Cami Silva!!! :scared: She had a 6 hour wait at the club yesterday with all the rain, so I expect she'll be glad to go back to Asuncion after today and have a well earnt rest!

"Quiero ser la top 200 y estar en Londres 2012"

http://www.ultimahora.com/adjuntos/imagenes/000/265/0000265997.jpg

-¿Vas a jugar torneos profesionales?

"Uy, estamos mal hoy", me dice. Me siento súper bien.

Estuve sola. Algunas compañeras me ayudaban.

English Translation:

"I want to be in the top 200 and to be in London 2012"

FEMALE TENNIS STAR OF PARAGUAY HAD A SPLENDID YEAR IN 2010.
And most importantly, closing the season with the best ranking among the 470 best players in the world, a demanding professional sphere.

- Are you going to play professional tournaments?

"I have no plans to play professional tournaments immediately. As no points to defend half of the year, all wins, total. So I have plans to start with the Fed Cup is a different experience. It's another thing to play for the country. You draw strength from wherever, because you're playing for Paraguay. It's a different motivation. For me it's an honor to play for my country and every time I do I break.

- How did you feel to be championed at the First Youth Olympics in Singapore?

"It was a great honor to go as a flagbearer. I was as shocked to march with the flag before a crowd. It was unbelievable. I have no words to describe what it meant to me to be there in the first edition. I was not very good tennis. I had to play against the Romanian Dinu, my doubles partner, I did everything possible, but it was her match.

- How did you get started in tennis?

"I started at 5 years old, behind my brothers Andres and Estefania. I was like a puppy behind them. At 4 years old I wanted to play at the Colegio San José. They told me I was very young. But at 5 I already started. At age 9 I started with Alfredo de Brix and continued until now. I gave my first steps with Cristian de los Rios. Alfredo is like my second dad. He knows when I wake up fretful. "Oops, we are bad today," he says. I spend more time with him than my dad. For me it's the best coach. He has details that seem minimal, but in the end are great and make the difference. I'm feeling really good.

"This 2011 that finally arrives return to celebrate your birthday 19 in Paraguay.

- Yes ... At 13 I began to spend my birthday out. That year I played in Colombia. At 15 I wanted to spend it in our country so I cut the Cosat circuit short. The last three years again I had to depart. In my junior career it was my fifth birthday away from home in total.

- Now do you vacation?

"No, I'm starting again this week to work on physical, which is what I need. Then again, I will attend the tennis part. I'm working hard because I want to go to London 2012.

- What do you need?

"My goal is the Olympics 2012. That's what I'm aiming for. Hopefully I can go. Odesur I was in, and Pan American Championships and Junior Olympics.

- What are the tournaments in the first half in which you can score points?

"I want to improve my ranking. The first thing I will do is play challengers in Argentina or Chile. I aim for the bigger tournaments, because the difference is huge. Playing less and earning less matches you can win many more points and money. I aim for bigger tournaments, including 50,000 tournaments, if I can.

- What costs more?

"It's hard to maintain consistency. This year, in five weeks, I had a great end of the year. I am very happy because it is harder to maintain. I think I'm getting better in that regard. Still, the finals that I lost ...

- What about the study?

"I'm doing free in the New Millennium (College), which supports me so much, as I travel a lot, so it is impossible to follow the normal school. I have one more year. I have time to study. There is a cap on the body recently. My goal is to get involved as 200 or more obviously. In two or three years i'll see how it goes ... And then I'll decide. For now I've made up my mind: to be professional. Then I am quite sure I will have it clear: I want to be professional and top 200, let me get straight to the Olympics.

"Economically, how do you sustain it?

"Tennis is a very expensive sport. There must be a lot of support, for without it, it is very difficult to reach. Now, for me, the stakes are higher, as I point to the challengers. And I need a strong sponsor. I take this opportunity to thank the POPs, Pulp, APT, SND and Babolat by clothing. I wish I had a large company to support me. Now comes the hard part. I, for example, will not go to Australia because of the expense of the ticket.

- Choosing the places to go to compete is complex?

"Yes, there is an art to put together a calendar: area, location, schedule. Alfredo is in charge. The conditions of each tournament.

"Today in tennis concentration is fundamental.

"Yes, I like having a coach. In Talca it was very windy, the courts were not good. I was alone. Some of my colleagues helped me.

"In general, the South Americans are good friends.

"In truth, I have many friends ... It is very difficult to have them because there is rivalry. It's all good, but at the moment of truth, on the court, jump. In the professional field is different, it is more difficult because of the competitiveness. In juniors all support each other.

"In doubles you won with different companions ...

"I won with Vivian Segnini, Brazil; Luciana Sarmenti and Vanesa Furlanetto, from Argentina. But I will be with Sarmenti to play next year. Where we meet, we will be together. The ideal is to do it.

COMBINATION

A journey of the last 12 months where she had to share her status with the budding junior player and professionalism, had a close to full orchestra, which allows it to be among the top 500 rented. She became No. 10 in ITF Juniors and gave priority to the junior tournaments playing three Grand Slams, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

She is the successor to Rossana de los Rios, someone who she admires, respects and gets along very well with.

Competition for nations like the Fed Cup and the Youth Olympic Games constitute another priority.

It would be cool if she could atleast make the top 225 by the USO Q cut off date. I may be able to see her play live if everything goes as planned :D

That would be a great position to be in! Let's hope she settles in well to the challenger level, which most Latin American junior players struggle with. But Vero seems to be very driven. I hope you can see her at the US Open!

I think yesterday she was presented with a special award for her achievements, along with promising male junior and friend Diego Galeano. :yeah:

She seems to be very confident of her game, but as she says its going to be a another whole world to play in the european or US levels. For players like Vero, Pau, Bianca, Aran or Cami , to name a few of our zone, its essential to have at least 25ks IN South America. Its clear that she wants more points and less matches, but if she has to rely only on the challengers in Argentina and Colombia and the Latin American swing, its gonna be hard.

As far of being RoRo´s successor...it´s still too soon to tell. Let´s just say that she has to play thinking in her own game, even if the two of them had really good junior careers. But it would be a wonderful example for other girls in South America if she could reach the top 200. Specially now.

Probably she just means it's a good goal to aim for, she obviously loves to represent her country and thrives in that situation. I wonder if they would give a WC to a Paraguayan? If she can crack the top 200 at least this year, she'd have another best part of a year to crack the top 100 after that, it's possible!

Vero won her second satellite this week in Encarnacion, Paraguay, both singles and doubles very easily.

1 Cepede Royg (1) - Daniela Vidal 6-1 6-3
2 Cepede Royg (1) - Melina Ferrero 6-2 6-0
QF Cepede Royg (1) - Jordana Lujan(8) 6-0 6-1
SF Cepede Royg (1) - Daniela Degano 6-1 6-1
F Cepede Royg (1) - Ornella Caron 6-2 6-2

That brings her rank into the top 320. She hasn't lost before the Semifinals in a tournament all year, so she's well and truly ready to compete with the top 250. Next she'll play $25K Itaparica, Brasil in two weeks. After that will be really interesting, she'll have to travel hopefully to Europe or the US to play some bigger challengers!

Awesome chance for VCR to get big points on this week 25K in Brazil. Without Pau, Mery and Flor, no tough european like other times, and no juniors as a thread, this is as good as it geets as a pre-season for an european tour in mind. Hopefully, she will join Moni and Pau for some challengers there (and maybe some WTA qualies). If not, there are still two more 25Ks in Southamerica. GL, Vero!

Disappointing 6-4 6-0 loss last week to Scarlett Werner. It's her first time playing challengers not in Latin America, so I guess she is still adjusting to the challenge, and at least she got a win!

However, this week in $25K Rome, she's into the Quarterfinals with a 6-1 7-6(4) win over #5 Maria Irigoyen and 6-1 5-7 6-1 over Katarzyna Piter. :D

Today Vero faces #2 seed Laura Thorpe in the Quarterfinals. If she can win this match she'll break into the top 300!

She's also playing doubles with Paula Ormaechea, they are into the Semifinals with wins over Hermenegildo/Pereira and #2 Auroux/Irigoyen. Hopefully the Latinas can make the final, Vero hasn't made a final over $10K level yet!

Next week she'll play $25K Denain in France, and then $25K Aschaffenburg in Germany, and then likely $25K Darmstadt also in Germany.

Keep it up, Vero! :yeah:

Well...a trip to Australia isn´t that cheap either. And the lack of money is always an issue for latinamericans, specially cause sponsors for women´s tennis players don´t grow on trees in the continent. And the situation isn´t that great now giving that the Petrobras challengers for the men ( they will be terribly missed) are gone since this year , so you can imagine what´s left for women (the 25K in Baires doesn´t seem to be in the calendar either).... Of course, it would be great to see her winning points in tourneys with the ranking that she currently has, but planning trips it really is a big, important decision for this girls. Even Moni Puig and Pau Ormaechea aren´t playing that much now. They have to be careful with what they choose to play.

I don't think she will go back to Europe this year, well I would be surprised. She didn't seem too happy there, it sounded really difficult and she seemed a bit homesick, and her results weren't amazing, but solid enough. I think like you said, Heath, she must be taking a rest, to train for the rest of the season and hopefully tweaking some things with her coach. What is mainly exciting to me about this victory is that it was on hardcourt, she never even won a $10K on hardcourt before, and this was her 5th time playing in Campos Do Jordao, last year lost in the second round to Nathaly Kurata. So it shows what big progress she continues to make!

I agree Australia would be a good option this year, but it's very unlikely on her first full tour as a WTA player. If she were to struggle all through next year (which I doubt), it would be much more likely I think. I agree Le Tenisse that money is a big issue for her as with all Latin American WTA players.

But she has to travel somewhere! I think it would most likely be the United States, even though they are hardcourt tournaments maybe this victory will give her some much needed confidence on this surface (and it's a little less further to travel and cheaper). Actually, the only non $10K tournament in Latin America left this year is $25K Bayamon in Puerto Rico at the end of October, pretty awful if you ask me :o 1 tournament above $10K level in 6 months for an entire continent. Anyway, i've been there too many times. If she can score another $25K victory somewhere later this year, she has a good chance to break the top 200 which is what I expected of her at the start of the year :oh:

Well, that was a huge win today!

6-1 6-2 over Sesil Karatantcheva  :yeah:

It's the first time she's played a tournament bigger than $25,00, also her first match in 9 weeks, and it's on hard, not clay. Not to mention Karatantcheva is no sleeze bag!

Yeah, I'm not too bothered with that loss either. As you say, it's on hardcourts and she's competing at a top 200 level. Tomljanovic is a pretty decent player. Just a shame that that epic 17-15 tiebreak win didn't give her the mental edge for the rest of the match!

She will play Mariana Duque Marino today in Troy 1R! The winner will play the top seed :sobbing:. As soon as I checked the entry list and saw they were both playing, I just knew they would draw each other, sure enough. I think Veronica will have the edge because although she is playing better, Mariana hasn't really done anything on hard for a long time. In fact, she only won 1 hardcourt match all year, a 3 set win over Ahsha Rolle in Monterrey Q1 back in March. But you never know anything in women's tennis.

Best of luck Vero!

I watched her last year against Dinu at the YOG & she was quite impressive. For a small girl (I think she's around 5'5?), she hits a very solid and heavy ball. She tries to get on top of the point in the rallies as much as she can. On top of that, she's a very steady player, good movement. I was surprised that she lost 1 & 4 in the consolation draw against Mutaguchi who honestly isn't that fantastic. I'm guessing Veronica decided to tank.

Yeah, it was really unlucky! :( She is easily one of the top 4 best players of the draw, shame she had to lose before the Semifinals.

Still, 7-5 6-3 (in 1hr 30min) against an in-form American top 50 player on hardcourts is nothing to be sneezed at. Best of luck to her in the doubles and mixed doubles!

If Fed Cup is in Brazil, she might stay for a $25K in Brazil the week after. That would be a smart schedulling, considering Cali is supposed to be packed this year with players in the top 100 trying to boost their ranking for the Olympics. I doubt that with her ranking she can access MD directly and she can't play qualies there if playing Fed Cup.

Yeah, I would love to see Vero bulk up her ranking a bit at the beginning of 2012. I can understand her not going to Australia with her borderline ranking. But it would be disappointing if her ranking wasn't securely inside the top 200 for the FO Q's

Great way to finish the year for her with another ITF title, but I think she can play even better than that. I can't wait to see her compete at the top 200 level next year and see how she fairs. I think she could definitely break the top 100 within the next 12 months if she keeps developing the way she has and maintains that determination and positive attitude. Just needs to work a bit more on her mentality, not squandering 6-0 leads and closing out matches even better.

Hopefully she's practicing more and more on hardcourts which will be vital to play a full calendar year next year. I anticipate her to do some good damage on the clay in Colombia early next year.

Keep it up Vero!!

Yeah, she has a great chance to break the top 200 if she wins 3 or 4 matches in the Brazilian 25K next week! She's already in Brazil this week for Fed Cup, and she's already beaten most of the other players in the entry list. So I think it's a good decision!

Today she beat Vaisemberg 6-3 6-2, nice revenge for the defeat in her second last tournament of 2011. She played quite well in the doubles with Monsterrat Gonzalez, really aggressive and particularly confident on her serve, and it was a good win over Brazil. Also she beat Bolivian player 6-1 6-0 yesterday.

Tomorrow she will play either Cata or Mariana, will be a much tougher match and crucial tie! Although she has 1-0 head to head advantage over both of them. The doubles might be decisive. Good luck Vero!

Another set of wins today, this time 6-4 6-0 over Andrea Gamiz and 2-6 6-4 6-3 in the doubles to help Paraguay win over Venezuela!

An excellent start to the year. 6-1 6-0, 6-3 6-2, 6-4 6-4 and 6-4 6-0 victories are a really good sign.

Unfortunately it looks to be difficult for Paraguay to qualify for the final tie, since in contrast Montse and Icha lost all their singles ties. But if Brazil cause a miracle win over Colombia tomorrow, they might still have a chance.

Regardless, Veronica has done a great job in Brazil!

Her hardcourt form is rather concerning. Straight sets losses to Naydenova and Cepelova doesn't give a good outlook for competing fulltime on the tour, where hardcourts comprise the majority of WTA tournaments. Still, hope she keeps up the great attitude and finds some form next week.

Next up, Fichman. Beat her in Fed Cup last year but she seems to be playing really solidly on clay. Suerte!

The title: On Road with Vero Cepede (talks about the way she moves in the states to play tournaments, driving by car alone or with her mother or with other players like Molinero and Alves)

Some wins lately but only against minor opposition. It must be really tough for her, emotionally on and off the court, but she's a fighter. Hope she has a breakthrough week soon, such an awesome girl

I assume Vero is not playing any other official tournament this year. This week she's playing Bolivarian Games in Peru and then she starts her preseason training with her new coach, former ATP player Ramon Delgado.

I had no idea Ramon was her new coach:eek: Awesome! :aparty: I think it's always a plus to have a coach that was a successful player on tour. Ramon would have been even more successful if it weren't for his numerous injuries
