Patty had QF to defend at the US Open from last year, but lost this year to Errani in 2nd round :tape:

64 50*
That is really great, especially when you think about that she played not really regularly since Estoril :D

From FB/twitter

I won my first round 64 60. It´s so great to be back on the court again. Right before my match they had a ceremony for Ai Sugiyama. Everybody had tears in their eyes including me. It wasn´t that easy to get on the court straight after that. She is such a great player and I wish her all the best for the future!!

I think the result after 4 weeks rest is ok for Sabine.

3-6, 6-4, 2-6
another 3rd set collapse from Sabine.
This is starting to become a trend.

Yes, she lost too many 3rd set matches. She is 4-9 in 3rd set matches this year.

To be honest, JJ is a very bad matchup for Sabine.
Sabine with her lack of speed is at great disadvantage against defensive retriever like JJ.
This is third time they have met this year and all three went to JJ.

I don't ever want to see Sabine vs. JJ again.
I think Sabine needs just more matches. That was only her 8th full match after Wimbledon, there were just too many injuries this year.

I am not sure Jankovic is a bad match-up for Sabine. Just the fact that she regularly takes sets off her should be enough of an evidence.
Slow big bashers, and I think Sabine is faster than most of them, have the tools to beat her. Sure JJ forces Sabine to hit one or even more extra shots but that isn't the reason why Jelena wins. She actually had to play some uberaggressive tennis to win today.
I believe Sabine's real problems were low 1st serve % and lack of fitness in the 3rd set. Plus Jankovic hit some excellent shots.

In today's third set, as in other 3 set matches, Sabine lost lot of speed in the first serve, hence lack of aces.
There were more double faults in the third.
Her footworks became a mess causing her to reach for balls
And she lost timing on her strokes causing total miss hits.

So should Sabine lose some weight? 5-10 pounds?
Does she need to be in better physical shape or is she just lacking match fitness?

Lunaris
Sep 29th, 2009, 02:26 PM
Not sure to be honest. I haven't watched many Sabine's matches being a fan for a relatively short time.
Weight itself isn't an issue for many players - Clijsters comes to mind. It actually helps you to muscle the ball in case your technique isn't textbook. Besides, Sabine doesn't look out of shape.
Frequent injuries might play their role because they interupt Sabine's training schedule.

I dont see her than fat as people may think,so it has to be lacking fitness:o

well, first of all, this was a decent performance of Sabine, when you think about it that she didnt play often since Wimbledon and then her shoulder problems and her ankle injury!
But even with all these problems she won against Schnyder and even won a set against a top ten player!

Well, a bit unlucky for her, so many seeds were playing awful this week, JJ played pretty good, I bet she would have won against many others, too! Sabine wasted a really good chance to go farat the US Open on the other side, we´ll see what she can achieve in China.

Her goals for the rest of the season should be to stay healthy, win some matches, and to stay under the top 32, which is all very likely! :)

But true, Sabine has to work on her fitness, after such a long break she should be able to stay powerful in such a match, but against all topplayer, she can´t keep her level and is just too tired in 3rd set. More DF´s are often a consequence of that and 2nd problem is that she is still a headcase, she just wastes too many chances in her matches often!
But she is young, just turned 20, I am sure she will work on that in the off season, otherwise it will be difficult for her to achieve her goal (top 10).

I guess she's gonna brook this defeat quite fast. It's been a tough 3setter against one of the best players of the world that looks top-fit. She's skrinking the gap to the top of the WTA - that's what I have seen. Not more, not less.

here her words on twitter:

Sure, that´s what I also saw, it is always a bit frustrating to play against JJ, as you know as a player like Sabine that you have all chances to win if you dont make too many UE´s, but JJ is just really consistent and especially when you come back after a long break, without having played that much it is really difficult to beat her.
For the future Sabine should also try to finish points more at the net, but for a 20 year old player it is normal that she prefers it so far to stay on the baseline more but I am sure that we will see her more often on the net in future.

No, she doesn't need to lose weight. She's pretty quick for a girl of her size. She just seems to lack some fitness, maybe because she just started practicing 4 days before the tourney or maybe also in general, I don't know. But I'm sure she'll work hard on it ;)

Why doesn't Sabine play more doubles?
She could regain her match fitness and work on her net play without the pressure of singles match.
But she rarely plays doubles.

Yeah, she's only played about 4 doubles matches this year. It could definitely help her and i'm sure there's many players needing a doubles partner.

well, you saw it yourself, playing doubles regularly would be too much for Sabine right now.
Even know she often has problems with her fitness when a match takes too long, if she would play doubles and singles this would be even worse, so it is better I think to concentrate only on singles for now.
If she is fitter again and more resilient again she should play more doubles to improve, no doubt about that!

I checked it and it looks that Sabine isn't even ranked in doubles. She would have to ask for a WC to get direct entry into any tournament, or pair up with someone ranked high enough to warrant direct entry for an unranked partner.
Anyway, I think Sabs needs to work mainly on her baseline game because it still is a rather raw material, prone to inconsistency and lack of control. Baseline game is what matters most in modern tennis - power off the ground, footwork and footspeed. Sure, it's important to have a plan B, but first she needs to perfect her plan A. That may take some time, she's still barely 20 years old. If she manages to do that she will be a force to reckon with.

This. As soon as she has control of her errors and her constistency, she should develop her serve and volley skills. She has the foundation for a giant building, but the bricks are still on their way :help:

Tough luck Sabs  You'll get luck again some time soon.

Sabine has problems finishing in 3rd sets because she gets tired.
But its not because she has had long grueling season, its the opposite.
She is out of shape because she has hardly played since Wimbledon.
Someone pointed out that she has only played something like 8 matches since Wimbledon.

If Sabine wants to better her match fitness, she has to play more, not less.
Its very hard to get match fitness or rhythm back when playing so infrequently.
Practice can only do so much, to be at her best, she needs more matches.
That is why I think Sabine should play doubles more.

But not right now, she is just coming back from injury again, I agree with you that she has to play more doubles, but only when she feels 100% fit again.
And sure, I also mentioned that, she didnt play often this year and that it is normal that she isnt in best shap...but first thing you have to do when you want to be fitter is to train harder outside the court, no one gets fitter from only playing matches..

And as long as she has that problem with fitness it is better to concentrate just on singles, but I am sure she and her team will work hard on fitness anyway in off season and then she should definetly play more doubles..
