View Full Version : Lady Gaga @ the VMAs

I really liked Lady Gaga's performance at the VMAs... the whole bleeding and dying on the stage and such... I can't really describe it other than I visit Los Angeles regularly and understand what the Paparazzi does and has done to celebrities. They destroy people with their cameras, captions, and rumors. Unfortunately, I hope Lady Gaga is keeping her whistle clean because with this performance she has essentially thrown wood into a raging fire :( ... just when she made me a fan.

I'm not normally into divas but I love her. Some of her music is a little bland but her originality can only be a good thing.
I love Paparazzi and thought her performance was really impressive, albeit completely over the top!

just another version (with ketchup and different choreography) of Madonna's 1990 Vogue performance nothing else.

the biggest difference being one is an iconic classic while the other ...

I found it a bit weird.

But after watching the performance i understood the song a bit more. The gist that i got was it was about stalking.

another critical difference being that Paparazzi is actually a good song, and Lady Gaga also has a good singing voice

must say, this performance has made me a fan of Lady Gaga...

i'm so bored with the Mandy Moore's, the Christina Aguilera's, the Christina Milian's...all goodie goodie's who suck up to the media, who are so mindnumbingly boring and conformist!

loved the performance, and love the song! lady gaga, you made a new fan :D

I didn't really like the song Paparazzi that much until after I saw this version. The instrumental with the strings sounds much nicer.

I personally loved the performance. It was just really really different. I think that's what we need for people who think pop music is dead nowadays.

Well she had to do something over the top for Paparazzi to be a hit in the states.
As of now it really only has overseas potential which sucks because it is my favorite song of hers.
The fact that people are still talking about the performance is a good sign.

Although it was a bit on the creepy side, the thing that really shown for me was her vocals.
She modulated well in minors that made the song even creepier in places.
And she knows how to play a wicked piano.

It doesn't compare to Christina though.

mandy moore?? Have you been living under a rock for some years? Oh and btw andy roddick hasn't won another slam yet.

I really wonder what the heck gaga is going to do image wise when her next album comes out. Surely she can't become MORE outrageous? Otherwise ppl will get bored of her.
I think she'll prob tone it down. Come back with brown hair and release a piano ballad.

are you too dumb to realise the context in which i said her name?

despite all her talk about descartes and artificiality, i find lady gaga unspeakably bland and boring. in the end, if the music is not right, no costumes, make-up and post-modern theories can make up for it. the VMA performance is a very precise example for this.

that said, she was better than janet jackson's embarassing lip-synching to "scream". man, that blew.

I'm sitting here trying to think of some way of making it clear how silly you sound talking about context when you put someone whose name is SO out of date, completely irrelevant and utterly OUT OF CONTEXT in your previous post. My god. I'm just embarrassed for you.

i was not speaking of her specifically...i was speaking of artists around today LIKE her!

Lady Gaga is amazing. I love her music, it is the ultimate mix and mash of Pop and Dance and it's just fun and makes you want to get up and move.

Her performance was one of the more visually enticing and memorable from the VMA's in oh I don't know... YEARS. Years... I mean like in the last 5 years or so.

She is creativy, crazy and she does her own thing which is needed cause the Pop industry is really faltering. Aguilera is doing absolutely nothing, Pink's last album I think was okay, but nothing new. Britney is a lost cause, seriously she should retire cause that girl is blank, all blank inside.

Gaga will continue putting out hits!

Pink has been going pop/rock for five years now and done pretty well with it.
Just when most thought the female rocker was dead, her and Kelly Clarkson have revived something that was just a joke on American Idol 7 years ago.

Aguilera is working with Sia, Goldfrapp, and MIA, for her next album.
I wouldn't consider that doing nothing. :wavey:

Ok. Yeah I agree that Britney is a blank slate.
Nothing seems to be going on in that head of hers but for someone who was called the next Debbie Gibson, she's survived a lot longer than most people would have even dared to dream of.

I never claimed that Pink doing the rock/pop thing wasn't going well for her, I think it is perfect for her. I just liked her I'm Not Dead Album more than Funhouse.

Kelly Clarkson... had a great Breakway album. My December was not bad, but got entirely demolished in bad hype. Her last album was pretty good though, like it.

Aguilera takes too damn long to release anything. 4 years in between her albums is ridiculous. 2.5 years is sufficient. 4 years is just, "Make it amazing" And she doesn't.

Britney, yes she has staying power, that's about all these days. :tape:

I just wanted to say from a guy who's not a fan of Lady Gaga at all, that her performance was pretty dope. I couldn't believe how well she could sing live, holy fuck. I figured she was another auto-tune, recording studio hack. But she can carry a tune (more than you can say for most artists nowadays) and perform the fuck out of the stage at the same time. Kudos for her for that, and now if I don't like her music, I at least respect her talent.

I agree...You have to give her credit, she can indeed sing, and she's a good entertainer. There's nothing more annoying than paying money to see someone perform and have them lip sync the performance. Lady Gaga actually sings pretty well, much better than I would have ever expected when I first started hearing her songs...

*cough* Time for some criticism.

I think it's her best so far, and is very good, but I think she still has a lot of room for improvements. Her dancing especially is the problem and the choreography isn't all that. There's too much going on.

I love most of her songs but for some reason can't stand her. Her personality totally puts me off (and that she has Perez Hilton as her official toilet paper doesn't help).

~{X}~
Nov 30th, 2009, 03:51 AM
Well ignore Perez, most do. :o

Her personality is fine, she's nice and actually down to earth in many of her interviews. She likes to put on a show for people in her performances, like theater. Nothing wrong with that.

She does outlandish things, its fun to watch, better than the typical singer, with 20 back up dancers, doing the same shit everytime.

Wow, I just can't get over that performance @ the VMAs. The beginning was intriguing, the choreography was on point, the piano sequence was fierce, the finale was dramatic and unexpected, and let alone, the gushing blood...

I'm not masochistic or anything, but the her lyrics matched the performance. And as a visual artist, I appreciate when another artist connects two mediums into one. Wow, this was an awesome performance!

What's overrated exactly? Her songwriting is exceptional, her voice is very good, she has producing credits, she's eloquent and introspective when she talks, she's respectful, she goes outside the box with her material/videos, and what I'm most jealous of (as a Britney fan nowadays) is she actually interacts with her fans during shows and even online.

The only things I can honestly say I don't love about her are her average looks, her dancing in general, and her way over the top fashion sense. But the fashion is part of the appeal at this point, and I like the fact that she takes risks, even though some of her ideas are pretty outlandish. I wasn't a particular fan of this VMA performance, but I can't say I wasn't entertained.

I think where most people see all her qualities as a launchpad to becoming an icon, you just nitpick at her faults in hopes of convincing yourself that she's a flash in the pan. I'm becoming more and more sure that this Lady is here to stay. Time will tell.

Don't worry though, she and Brit can co-exist. :)

so now Gaga claims (via Oprah) the VMA performance was a tribute to Princess Diana :tape:

What is she smoking?...this "cultural references" non-sense needs to stop, if I'm ever going to take her seriously. I think she does a lot of drugs; I'm not saying that as an insult. I just think she does.
