Hey guys!

Ok so I couldn't resist not coming to the Bell Challenge, as this as been the birth place of all my tennis mania ;) I've been spending all week here for the past 12-13 years and couldn't miss a chance to do it again.

So well, bybye school for a few days, and I'm here from Wednesday to Friday, once again doing the interviews for the visitors with the players and just walking around the tournament, watching the matches, hanging out with my girls and their families and taking a bit of a break from the hectiness of my Montreal life.

I'll try to update this thread constantly with news or information about what is going on and the interviews I did.

So I arrived today, chatted a bit with Val and Becca (who should be getting on court soon) and then headed to my first interview with...(Heath, this is for you): Lilia Osterloh!

What an adorable person. Really a doll, just naturally calm and happy and smily. We chatted a long time before getting in front of the kids, talked about her always being here and me remembering her when I was a ballboy years ago. Chatted about me being a big tennis fan and going around in tournies, friend of Steph, she said she even visited my website (Steph's official, www.stephaniedubois.net (http://www.stephaniedubois.net), time for some publicity ;) ).

Then the kids asked her questions, she was very patient and very nice with them. She mentionned she plans on playing a few more years if she can stay healthy, that she likes coming here a lot (and has been here around 10 times in her career), about her success in GS in 2000, her win against Pierce, etc. Overall a very nice time.

Melinda just managed to close out Severine. Severine was coming back and I think Melinda got scared, as she was 5-1 up and Severine had a bp for 4-5 to come back on serve.

Melinda was returning really really well, hitting the balls really deep and moving Severine around. Sev tried to vary things up and slice, volley, etc but Melinda was just too solid.

Hopefully she won't be as solid later today in doubles ;)

Rebecca is next up, while the doubles on court 1 just started. I'll go check it out for a while, cheer for Becca who I think had such a great opportunity to reach quarters or more. Julia won't be easy, but this surface fits Rebecca so perfectly, her serve just goes through the court and the amount of aces she can produce is amazing.

Go Becca!

Ok sorry for the lack of updates, I was down there enjoying the action.

Here are a few things I remember:

- Julia G played pretty well, first time I had seen her live and she was on today. Rebecca could just not do anything with Julia's serves, and while Marino's serve is amazing, it wasn't enough to keep her in the match. Julia should get through that decimated section.

- Marie-Eve and Laura did the comeback of the day. They were down 5-9 and then 9-10 in the supertiebreak and came back to win 12-10. Nice effort from them and its great to see Marie-Eve in the second round in doubles, good points for her.

- Jill started crying after her loss today. Not sure what happened there, maybe she knew it was her last time playing in Quebec City (she has played here since 98 or sthing). It was quite sad.

- Rebecca and Steph did decent in the first set, but Melinda and Nath just knew what to do when it counted. Take Steph's less hard shots and just whack them at Rebecca at the net. Rebecca has a great serve and just that makes her a good partner, she is solid from the ground, but she still looks a bit awkward volleying and moving around. Steph played a decent match but just lacked a bit of firepower in some key moments. Turning point: they broke right away in the second, had a 40-0 lead on Becca's serve, but ended up losing the game. They didn't win a game after that.

- What a lovely team Sofia and Severine make. Two players who enjoy the tournament here, have been regulars and they just played so well today to beat Lucie and Ulihrova. Some awesome shotmaking by Sev and perfect groundies by Sofia. Watch out for them in the draw.

To be honest, the vibe I got from Jill was the felt disappointed not to do better when she had a chance in possibly her last tournament here. But I could be wrong, maybe she was just disappointed cause she lost, but I had never seen her like this over the years.

so heartbreaking,
she does get a lot of chances and never seems to convert, so i could see why she would be beaten up about it

any report on lilia, playing wise?

How did the Pelletier match go? Like how did they do they big comeback? Who's work was it Pelletier or Granville? How is Pelletier as a doubles player? THANKS!

Marie-Eve has turned into a good doubles player, her serve is now quite a weapon, she moves well on the court, very motivated too. Her backhand is still top notch so she can return well from the left side. Her forehand is attackable though.

From what I have seen of their comeback, it was a lot of factors: more errors from Perry and Adamczack, some nice solid groundies by Laura which set up some volleys by Marie-Eve, but mostly more variation with lobs, etc. Perry and Monique were both concentrating on simpler doubles with big serves and big volleys and thus when it stopped working, Marie and Laura could take their chances.

Sorry, I haven't seen Lilia play yet in singles, but will today if I get a chance. I'll give you some news :)

Aaawl, such a nice interview! Thanks so much Charlie! It was a nice Birthday present for me ;)

Btw, Today is Amys B-Day:hearts:. Remember all those years she came to Quebec City ?? I'm sure you don't want to remember the time she beat Steph in 1R after coming back from like 5-0 down in the TB :p. But hey, atleast she went on to win the tourney after that

Again, thanks again for interviewing Lilia! =)

Ps, have you seen much of Riza around the site ?? :)

Omg, how could i forget it was Aleks! It must be my old age after yet another B-Day :p.

Btw, whats going on with Lilia out there ? She's about ready to lose set 2 . I have a feeling she's playing a bit too safe and her serve is letting her down.

¤CharlDa¤
Sep 17th, 2009, 05:25 PM
- Lilia and Sadikovic are on court right now. Lilia managed to close out the first with a few too many mistakes from Sadikovic, but I find that Lilia has lost some of the pop on her groundies. She is still quite solid, but is missing the pace that could make Sadikovic have less time. Arma has a nice game, big serve and big forehand, nice slice backhand that she uses well, serves and volleys, etc. Lilia also has looked a bit upset with herself and the umpiring and all, I'm hoping she can manage to regroup and either come back in this second set (she just saved 2 set points) or get the third. It's such a nice draw for her to reach quarters and why not even semis. But she will certainly have to raise her level up a bit.

¤CharlDa¤
Sep 17th, 2009, 05:27 PM
Well she just lost it after a nice passing shot by Sadikovic and a bad UE. She is indeed letting Arma dominate the points a lot more and is not moving her around much. Not sure what is going on in her mind but she kinda seem like she lost the plan she had. She did the same against Perry though and managed to pull through.

Darn it, Lilia lost the 2nd set 6-2:sad:. Ok now, its time to regroup and get those groundies poppin in the 3rd :bounce:.

She is wearing a white and light blue top with a matching light blue skirt, with a whie visor, obviously ;)

And nope, haven't seen Riza play yet, though I've seen her walking around the grounds. I'll probably miss her today too as I'm leaving for the afternoon to go shopping with my mom and then coming back for Val's match a 7pm.

Just came back from my second interview of the day with Laura Granville, what an amazing lady. So smart, sweet, caring. Met her dad (also named Charles) who is exactly like his daughter. She was giving long thoughtful answers (which is nice but hell for me as a translator) and we chatted a long time on the city here, Montreal, her career, injuries and all.

I always loved her, had chatted with her a bit before in past years, but it just confirmed everything.

Nice to see Lilia pulled through. It will be tough against Julia G in the next round though.

Mattek-Sands and Vania has started out as a great match so far, incredibly enjoyable and nice hard-hitting but also varied rallies. I wish I could stay longer.

Heath: Shopping in quebec city is meh, but with mom, who usually ends up paying for most, it's always good ;)

I'll try to go and check a few minutes of the doubles.

Ok so I'm back from shopping (yay new shoes...paid by mom!) and night session.

-Safarova was just brutal today. Astonishing display of tennis and poor Val didn't play a bad match but was just totally overplayed. Winners from everywhere, barely no errors, never was scared on her serve. If Lucie plays like that all week, she should end up the winner. Very very impressive.

- Aleks did very well in the first set, hitting hard and deep as she always does. Moving Kulikova around and just attacking first. Second set was the total opposite, Aleks maybe got a bit nervous but Kulikova was just whacking the ball with so much pace and in the corners. A lot of crazy mistakes and bad choices at key times made Aleks stay in the set, and she ended up closing it out in two after finding some aggression again.

Steven: As Alain confirmed, just finals. And Steph is on her way to Saguenay for the 50k. Simply overplayed by Safarova, just like Val was. Lucie just too good right now. In doubles, tricky opponents and they found a key strategy late in the first that helped them get through it quite handily.

youngunner: I saw half of the first set of Beth vs Vania and it was such an entertaining match. The crowd here really enjoys Beth, and her game is so entertaining to look at. She was hitting really well and her match against Lucie today could be really good. That's if Lucie even gives her a chance to touch the ball, which hasn't been the case yet for anyone ;)

Heath: Pffft, you would know that my Valerie, Stephanie and Rebecca cheers are immensly manly ;) I probably won't be able to see any of Lilia today as I need to drive back to Montreal in the afternoon because I teach a group lesson at 4pm :(

Just finished my last interview of the week (and year!) with Severine Bremond. She remembered me from previous years (well, we did salsa dance together last year ;)) and was a sweetheart as usual. Very nice classy lady, we talked a bit about her pairing with Sofia which seems to be working perfectly.

Well that finishes my week here, as I have now to head up to Montreal, 2h30 hours driving, to go work this afternoon.

If you have any questions about the week or the tourney I can keep on answering them though ;)

Cheers!

The interviews are made for a live audience. I'm pretty much a translator between the players and the crowd (mostly kids from surrounding schools). I also ask questions once in a while when it dries up. Very fun to do and like every year, the players have been amazing. But at the same time, while they are paid a slight amount I think, the players who decide to do it really do because they want to and are open to it, so rarely attitudes are seen ;)

Sep 18th, 2009, 11:05 PM
That they decided to play together last minute because they both enjoyed each other's company (which I agree, they both are regulars here in Quebec City who have always been nice to everyone), that their games were matching perfectly in doubles (and i agree there too, I mentionned it earlier) and that they are having fun and just going with the flow, and why not, hoping to win it all.

Glad you had a chance to include Julia Goerges in the interviews. What types of things did you or the audience ask about? I guess this is her first time in Quebec City so maybe most people hadn't heard of her before? I did see her play in Memphis in Feb 2008 and interestingly it was against Lilia, and Julia won 7-6 7-6. Seems she had an easier time today. How would you compare how she's playing vs. Lucie? Have a semifinal prediction?

Also, how were Melinda and Nathalie in the doubles? Thanks!

¤CharlDa¤
Sep 19th, 2009, 04:11 AM
Sometimes the kids are the ones asking questions so it can be pretty cute and funny. I don't recall anything specific concerning Julia's questions, except a small kid that asked: why do you wear skirts? ;)

I did talk one on one with her a bit though, mostly about her coming here for the first time. She was also proud of her dubs title in Potoroz and her 100K win. And yes, people probably had no idea who she is. And sadly, as she only played day matches, they probably still don't.

As for her chances against Safarova, both have immensely impressed me this week. Lucie has just been superb and will be favorite for sure, but if Julia can whack the ball hard just like she can, maybe Lucie won't have as much time as against other opponents.

Melinda and Nathalie were decent against Steph and Rebecca (I still hate them for it though ;)). Melinda was very good from the back, hitting so hard and that's what she has been doing in singles too. Nathalie was the weakest link but still moved well at the net. They just had a good strategy in that match which was to take advantage of Steph's weaker serves to just whack the balls at Rebecca who is not that agile on the court. Worked perfectly from 6-5 onwards.

The only thing I can remember her mentionning about injuries is that she hadn't be lucky about it in the last year and that she really hoped to have a few injury-free years in front of her still. It's been a few days already so I'm not sure.

Laura talked a bit more about her wrist injury though and how she needed surgery.
