did many other players get footfaults???? the only matches i watched with the sound on (and no other windows open) were vee, rena and francy. Did they just decide to crackdown on footfaulting at this tournament???

rena's staredown came from an unquestionable footfault that should definitely have been called. this one...i'm not so sure

they didn't tend to replay vee's too much, but she had a load more than rena

This is a fair point to be hoenst.

Maybe the line judges were taught to be less lenient on foot faults, and Serena and Venus just cut it fine. I don't know. But whether Serena did foot fault or not aside, her reaction was unnaceptable.

They had almost no footfaults the whole year and now they are making so many? I wonder whats wrong with both the sisters at the same time in the same tournament.

The line judges were obviously told to pay more attention to it, the Williams Sisters were not the only ones to be called out.

I wonder if lines people were asked to crack down on footfaults this summer. Many were called in Cincy. Maria got called for several in Toronto... I just wonder if the lines people in a training session were told... you know you've been allowing so many foot faults... you have to start calling those.
Although... at last year's USO when McHale got overcome by heat... she was starting serves with more than half her foot over the line and inside the court... and nothing was called.

I was talking about Serena:p

this particular thread is about both sisters, not serena specifically

I have not seen any conclusive footage of the footfault. The one that occurred before the staredown was a definite fault, her foot kind of double skipped. I have watched available tape of this fault and her foot was solid, but the shot was from behind. After looking I feel that call probably should not have been made. Has anyone seen a side shot?

 The judges have been really bad this Open. In the Roger vs Novak match..chair umpire overruling clean aces, balls on the line called out.. it's just sad.

Oh come on, let's just give the OP what he wants...

The judges are all racists!!!!

Clearly racism. With Hawkeye here now, the line judges have to show off their racism in other ways!

This is a fair point I'd like to see looked into. Serena's outburst and fine is dealt with separately irrespective of whether the call was right or not.

Lots of questions I have: Like are they less lenient here than the rest of the tour? And what if a LJ thinks it is a foot fault but has a tiny bit of doubt? Also - can't we get hawkeye in on this so a player can challenge if they want. And the whole issue of foot faults on MP - I don't think there should be any unwritten rules that they don't or do get called. I think there should be written guidance on this. Maybe it should be something like - if there is any doubt at all it shouldn't be called. Otherwise it should be even on MP. But anyway whatever it is - write it down. It shouldn't be an unwriiten law not to call them.

Venus did make some foot faults, and perhaps so did Serena. I do think the lines people were told to be on the lookout. I doubt there was any conspiracy against the sisters. However, this lineslady looked so pleased (so smug?) to have found a foot fault. I suppose that's like being a copyeditor and finding and correcting an error--justifies your job.

maybe ree and vee were getting a pass. of course they usually don't last long in most tournaments.

all these foot faults out of the blue sound fishy to me.

My theory about the double faults is Serena's new shoes. She has only double faulted in night matches with the new shoes.

maybe because they were stepping in the service line as many times?...that or just pure hate.

i think the new shoes are bulkier when she steps to serve so she double faults.

Going forward, all it's takes is four cameras to solve this issue. One from each side focused on the servers feet. If the players want to use up a challenge on a foot fault call, let them. It's their responsibility to manage their challenges now. That doesn't change.

BUT .... if the line judge is WRONG on a foot fault call three times in match, they get replaced. Which ought to be the general rule. The linespersons are correct in excess of 99% of the time. If one of them is wrong three times in match, they are clearly having an off day.

NOTE: Four cameras and operators is a significant exspense. So I would limit this to the slams and Premier 2.5's.

But it's an easy fix.

Definitely noticed a very large number throughout the tournament, men's and women's matches, compared to hardly ever hearing it called it seems...

Noticeable, the WS foot faults were mainly highlighted on matches against Clijsters, leaves much more to be desired.
God is watching .

Some have stated racism, but there was no racism involved at all.

Venus had so many double faults because on serve she was trying to compensate for her left injured knee and that was causing so many double faults. I think she had about 10 of them during this tournament, but she didn't go off, she just asked the line judge what foot it was so she could correct it.

I think Serena may have had about 3-4 foot faults and sometimes that happens. Those purple shoes made it even easier to see if her feet were touching the line.
