My first real discussion thread :bounce:

So with so many posts along the lines of, "if so and so win the wta is..." or "real #1," and so many unseeded/unknown players making it deep into GS etc etc, I thought it would be interesting (sorry if it's been done already) to know what was being said about now multiple GS winners when they won their FIRST SLAM (aka: Serena/Nav/Seles/Evert/Daventport/Henin/Hingis etc etc). Everyone starts somewhere right?

Were they touted as being the next big thing? Seen as very talented and a major star/contender for future slams? Just a big surprise? Were they even considered a threat b4 winning their first GS?

So basically, WHO were they before and when they won their first slam

Well Serena, despite her Father's predictions, was pretty much in Venus' shadow early on- always bearing the title "Venus' little Sister, Serena." Stats wise, however, she rose up the ranks faster than any girl in the history of the rankings system from the time that she turned pro to the time that she broke into the top ten, as I recall. I'm sure somebody has a more accurate account, though.

In many ways, I think being in Venus' shadow helped Serena. While much of the ballyhoo and expectations were on Venus, Serena could kind of develop in a more low pressure environment and yet feel like she had something to prove. And we all know how Serena plays when she feels like she has something to prove. ;)
