she didn't choke...i kept hearing about this epic choke  it looks to me like serena started hitting huge as usual...and that one ball kim decided to not play and catch it instead of playing was down to inexperience especially since it was on bp...always play the ball....

She was waiting for Serena to give it to her with UEs. The same story with AO 2003 when Kim was leading 5-1 in the 3rd set and couldn't close it out. Serena played her best tennis at the end and hardy made errors to comeback to win.

Hingis vs Serena coming up.

A couple of things I noticed on their tendencies that have stayed with them to this day.
Kim:
Plays fast, no matter the score or momentum. Whether she is leading or not.

Serena:
Clutch serve when she has her back againt the wall.
Excellent serve.
Huge forehand return on puffy serves

Hingis-Serena

Let's keep in mind that at that point, Hingis was at her peak, on top of the WTA, was already multi-GS winner.

For Serena to play like that is even more impressing.

Serena's ALWAYS had the slice in her arsenal. There was just a long period where she went away from it. Even today, I don't think she hits it as well as she used to.

She moved more toward power through '03. I think now her game has gotten back to that more patient, discipline she had before. Largely, I think this is because girls have adapted to the "power" game and often give as good as they get.

i think that's what she was going back to in 07...but wasn't fit enough to do it...and i think the match that made her realise that was miami 07 final....

but note: one comment that ALWAYS makes me mad is the one bill just made - talking about the power game got rid of hingis, he then proceeds to say it's people like jh and kim who made you see you could play with power and have a strategy

Keep in mind that Serena/Clijsters were younger at the time than this years teen "sensation" Oudin. Hingis was also younger than Wozniacki and Wickmayer.

She wasn't jealous, she had the same expression in the quarters and all the other matches she was at. She also had IV's administered the night before, because she was cramping at the end of her singles semi and her blood pressure was really low. There are also moments earlier in the match where she was pumping her fist at Serena telling her "come on girl, you can do it" and after Serena won she had a big smile and was slapping Serena's hand with the rest of the family. That whole "jealousy" thing was something created by the media to try and drive a wedge between the sisters, trying to pit them against one another and make them bitter rivals. This is the same Venus that has taken pictures of Serena with the trophy after losing GS finals to her. This is the same Venus that stayed and cheered like mad for Serena at last years U.S Open and this years AO. This is the same player that is out there on 1 leg in the doubles because she doesn't want to let down her sister. So please, that was just some drummed up bullshit from the same media that is airing Melanie Oudin's families dirty laundry. Also Venus was dressed in athletic wear because they had a doubles match after the singles final. She wore the same hoody jacket and combo to all of Serena's matches. Mom and Dad weren't exactly in a ballgown and tux either.

I'm still trying to figure out why Serena doesn't come over the top on the one-handed backhand in matches the way she does in pre-match warmups. If nothing else, it'll give the girl on the other side of the net something else to think/worry about.

:topic: As far as I'm concerned, it ain't a real US Open rain delay until they show Connors-Krickstein 1991. :yeah:

Man, how different history could have been if (16 year old) Kim had managed to hold it together. As for that USO, my speculation would be Kim beats Conchita, loses to Monica, Monica loses to Lindsay, Lindsay beats Martina for the title.
But more interestingly, what would it have meant from a career standpoint for Kim and Serena. With less confidence, would Serena have ended up with "only" 6-7 career Slams? Would a confident and high-ranked Kim have gotten better, faster, perhaps have 6-7 Slams of her own. Who knows.
That Quadruple Fault, so painful to think about.
