A huge storm system is moving up the Atlantic Coast. They will probably have to play the women's final on Sunday afternoon. I can not remember if this ever happened before at USO?

I'm in Brooklyn about an hour away from the tennis center. Judging by the weather here, I'm almost certain it's going to rain tomorrow as well, for at least part of the day. They might not be playing the women's semis until Saturday night, if at all.

I doubt Serena-Clijsters will get on. They're surely going to try to finish Nadal-Gonzalez before letting the women's semis get on? If not, the organisers are even more moronic than I thought.

I think they HAVE to have Nadal v Gonzo finish on the court it started on so it HAS to stay on Ashe...I suppose Serena & Kim could risk waiting til that match is over if they really want it on Ashe but god knows how long Nadal will be out there bouncing the ball, towelling off & picking his pants out of his arse so it's probably a good idea to have Serena & Kim get on with their match elsewhere & Armstrong is the next best option.

I think it's good that the schedulers are actually trying to get the matches done, who really cares where they are so long as they're done.

General tennis convention is that players start playing a match on one court, they finish playing on that court. That said, the US Open haven't always abided by that.

Is it raining now? If not, why the hell didn't they start playing an hour ago?

Soo frustrating and frankly unacceptable at a Grand Slam event in 2009.

The Roadkill 2010 plan should have demanded retractable roofs (and thus guaranteed matches for TV) of, at the very least, every "mandatory" event.

Weather and Schedule Information
Friday, September 11, 2009

(as of 09/11/09 at 12:30 pm ET)

Weather at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center continues to be challenging with rain Friday and possible breaks in the afternoon.

We will make every effort to play today’s matches (Session 23). We are expecting potential delays due to the weather, but will play tennis if sufficient breaks in the rain occur. The first match in Arthur Ashe Stadium is currently scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET at the earliest. Please check back often for any updates.

The Nadal – Gonzalez match which was not completed Thursday night during session #22, is scheduled to conclude after the first women's semifinal. Only session 23 tickets will be honored.

Due to the uncertainty of the weather forecast for Friday, the USTA has several contingency plans in place to address the completion of Thursday night's match and beyond. Those plans will be implemented and communicated as the forecast develops throughout the day.

We apologize for the any inconvenience the weather may have caused. For further information, please see the US Open Inclement Weather Policy. Thanks for your patience.

Even if it stops raining and they can get in some play, hard courts is one of those things where the slightest bit of drops they have to stop it. Its not like clay. So there could be start and stop. In addition, its still going to be really windy. I wonder who that favors more. Serena played in windy conditions yesterday, but she's not so patient and likes to go for her shots, whereas Kim could be content to just keep the ball in play and wait for errors. I don't know yall. The wind is the great equalizer.

They keep pushing the start times back. First the earliest was 1pm...now its 2pm. According to the hour to hour I saw...the chances of rain increase more and more as the day goes on. Today might be a total washout.

It is starting to rain even harder here downtown Manhattan, so if it is raining just as hard in Queens, there is no way any plaly is starting at 2:00 PM. Another good indicator as to whether they will even play today is if the Yankees postpone their baseball game tonight at Yankee Stadium. If they do that, then that is a bad sign.

You'd think they'd funnel some of that "record attendance" money they get every year to pay some Mexicans to stick some plywood and guttering up on one of the courts. Having the biggest tennis stadium in the world is moot if it doesn't have a roof.

They should at least work with some other venues in the area to move play when there's a chance of 3 day washouts. It'll suck for the fans and broadcasters, but it beats having Monday and Tuesday finals.

They do not have much time before a big rain comes again that will last all the way to about 7:30 or 8 PM. Not enough time to finish a match, for sure. Play can start again at that time in the evening.

The drainage system isn't built for larger amounts at one time. Back in 2003 when we had a whole week of rain, I believe the grandstand was unplayable because the national tennis center was built on what can almost be considered swampland. If you've ever been there on the far side of the facility there are canals and some really muddy area's. In Queens there are floods in peoples basements and on streets when we get too much rain too quickly or when we have had a large amount of rain over a period of weeks. This whole summer has been on of the rainiest in NYC history so the ground is already really saturated and can't take much more rain. :rain:

Thanks for the explanation but: There's certain amount of water coming down: What's the difference of drying the court surface or the cover? Drying the cover would be faster IMO as you have to dry the court more careful because of the lines etc. But maybe I'm too naive :p
