When Serena says it, she's called "arrogant."

It is arrogant. The same things said by different people mean different things. Example:

Straight girl says, "dab2035 is sexy" = fact
Old man says, "dab2035 is sexy" = offensive
Gay man says, "dab2035 is sexy" = come on
And me pointing out that all these people have said these things? = arrogant

Few minutes ago, on ESPN2, in stutio interview, during Del Potro - Celic match.

I didn't know that was even a question. The only thing that stops Serena from being widely considered the greatest by far is her inconsistency. Yes, when she's on, she's the best. When is she on? 8 weeks per year if that...?

Henin def. peak Serena 7-6 6-1
Past-peak Hingis def. peak Serena 6-2 3-6 8-6

Serena is an amazing player but there have been women who are better because they can do more on the court. Now that these women are gone Serena is dominating the tour unchallenged. Indeed, if she plays her best now, there's no one of the current crop who can even win a set.

Yes, this is true now that Henin and Hingis have retired.
Even Hingis would not agree with you on that one, becauseit is still true when Hingis was still palying.

There is a match at the US OPen, which many think prompted Hingis to reconsider recalibrating her game.

During the first set of that match, Serena had 100% 1st serve, and she won all of them.

She was also blasting all Hingis serves, first or seond, as second serve.

At that time, McEnroe question the ranking, because Hingis was #1 at that time, but had not won a slam all year.( Eeven though she was already a mutli-slam winner)

I think Chris was proved right by the letter.

In Australia 2007, a fat Serena turned up and devastated the then best player in the world, Sharapova. Nobody else in the history of women's tennis could have done that, I don't think.

However, since Evert wrote the article, by my arithmetic Serena is 4/14 in slams, 5/15 if she wins this US Open.

That's not a good record for someone who's untouchable, and is largely down to Serena's lack of commitment.

So Serena has to be on the look out for the time machine and peak Nav, Chrissy, Court, King, Conally and Graf to come back and challenge her? Who the hell is she gonna be "touched" by except active players? She can't go back in time and challenge the great Helen Wills. Did Chris say of all time? NO So why do you bring it up? :tape:

Well, what is Serena at her best? Aussie Open 07 ?

No, really, it is so stupid to say "if X is at his/her best, nobody can touch him/her" hell how much times in a career can you play your very best ? nearly zero, and you are lucky if you can. Maybe it is luck. Maybe it is depending about the opponent. This Serena may struggle against erm an inform Jankovic, Henin, Venus .... Sharapova has not the game AT ALL to stop this Serena, but others have.

Olórin
Sep 11th, 2009, 12:23 AM
Well of course it depends on the opponent to agree, but the fact that Serena has beaten down all the player you mentioned at some point doesn't really strengthen your "point". Serena has indeed played at or near her best very few times, "but when she does, she is unstoppable". You may not agree with it, but it's actually a very simple statement to comprehend.

Keegan

Evert is right, Serena is virtually untouchable when she's playing at her best. I wish Serena played 100%, 100% of the time. She's really a joy to watch when she uses her full potential.

Henin and Serena never played each other at their peak, and I regret that. I would loved an epic match between peak Serena and peak Henin. Same there for Venus, and Jankovic I dunno. Maybe USO 2008 ? No I don't think so.

Well, I understand that statement but I don't agree with that, as simple as that. :)

This is such a myth. Serena's game can be offset by her opponent. I don't buy into any player being able to 100% control what goes on in a match between two players. This may have been more true in the past, but it's certainly not the case now.

It's arrogant when Serena says it, it's folly when Evert says it. She of all people should know a match is dependent on two people, not one. A lot of players are close to unbeatable when playing at their best, and Serena happens to be one of them.

Hingis was Serenas personal bitch from 01 USOpen semi till retirement.I CANNNOT believe there are Hingis fans comming in here with this B.S. Hingis with that 60 mph first serve was getting killled by an in form Serena Williams. People knock Serena for those three losses to Henin, but in 07 Serena rose from the tennis dead(84 ranked) to get back in the solid top-ten in the world. Serena in Miami 08 let Henin know this was not 07.

Nothing most of us didn't know already.

Loved how she confirmed what Williams fans have been

saying for years.

When asked about No one dominant in the No 1 player

position she talked about the depth of good players

when She and Martina played. And how there were so many

more great players today than back in the day.

Clijsters made it closer than everyone expected. She doesn't need to be able to predict the exact outcome of every match to be reliable. And Evert has seen Serena play an awful lot more than she had Kim at that point.
