View Full Version : Henin's Long Anticipated Press Conference... Is Finally Here..

Here is a report on Justine's UNICEF Press Conference.

As feared by some on this board, this report has more about tennis than UNICEF.

Form what I can, tell, Henin could not steer the journalist to limit their questions on UNICEF

Justine Henin leaves tennis return question open

Henin was asked again if she would return to the WTA Tennis Tour and her answer is no longer the definitive “no”. Instead she said “Come back and ask me later.”

Henins, who is an UNICEF goodwill ambassador, tried to keep the press conference focused on tetanus vaccinations for mothers and babies in developing nations.

“We are here to discuss child mortality in the world, a subject matter which is important enough to center on this today,” she said.

After retiring in May 2008, Henin said the sport had left her with so many physical pains that a return was unthinkable but recently she began training again for a small exhibition tournament in southern Charleroi, one she has played in regularly during the December winter break.

Henin also pulled out of a theater commitment, fueling rumors that she needed time for tennis practice.

Justine was asked about Clijsters’ surge and the surprise run of Yanina Wickmayer, landing two Belgians in the semifinals of the U.S. Open.
“It is magnificent, that is evident,” Henin said. “But understand that I am here in my role as ambassador.”

Henin has traveled recently to Congo, Cambodia and Denmark to learn more about child vaccinations and how it affects survival for hundreds of thousands of poor mothers and babies around the world. Her face will become the face of the UNICEF tetanus campaign this fall.

“I have been able to discover so many things in my life after tennis,” she said. “You live in a bubble and in leaving it, you ask plenty of questions on plenty of issues.”

Retired Justine Henin leaves open a return to competitive tennis

http://snsimages.tribune.com/media/photo/2009-09/49174606.jpg Belgium's former number one tennis champion and UNICEF Ambassador Justine Henin speaks during a media conference regarding childhood vaccinations in developing countries at UNICEF headquarters in Brussels, Thursday Sept. 10, 2009. Amid the resurgence of Belgian tennis, Justine Henin has moved from retirement, to confirming she won't come back, and now, to refusing to discuss her future. As UNICEF goodwill ambassador, she now tries hard to stay focused on tetanus vaccinations for mothers and babies in developing nations. BRUSSELS (AP) — Justine Henin has gone from confirming she won't return to competitive tennis to refusing to discuss her future.

The retired Henin was asked again Thursday if she would return to the sport. The answer is no longer the definitive "no" it once was. It is now something more like, "Come back and ask me later."

A UNICEF goodwill ambassador, she tried to keep the press conference focused on tetanus vaccinations for mothers and babies in developing nations.

"We are here to discuss child mortality in the world, a subject matter which is important enough to center on this today," she said at UNICEF headquarters.

Last year, Henin shocked the tennis world by announcing her retirement while ranked No. 1. In May, she said the sport had left her with so many physical pains that a return was unthinkable.

Yet she was seen training again recently, apparently for a small exhibition tournament in southern Charleroi, one she has played in regularly during the December winter break.

Some wonder if the exhibition will have the same impact as it did on Kim Clijsters. After retiring two years ago, she played an exhibition at Wimbledon this spring to test the new retractable roof. It got her competitive fire burning again.

Clijsters returned to the tour last month, and will play in the semifinals of the U.S Open on Friday.

Henin also pulled out of a theater commitment, fueling rumors that she needed time for tennis practice.

On Thursday, she deflected such questions. Four months ago, she said competitive tennis "is truly a page that has been turned."

She was asked about Clijsters' surge and the surprise run of teenager Yanina Wickmayer, landing two Belgians in the semifinals of the U.S. Open.

"It is magnificent, that is evident," Henin said. "But understand that I am here in my role as ambassador."

Over the past months, Henin has traveled to Congo, Cambodia and Denmark to learn more about child vaccinations and how it affects survival for hundreds of thousands of poor mothers and babies around the world. Her face will become the face of the UNICEF tetanus campaign this fall.

"I have been able to discover so many things in my life after tennis," she said. "You live in a bubble and in leaving it, you ask plenty of questions on plenty of issues."

At 27, it would certainly not be too late for a comeback. As the 26-year-old Clijsters has proved, breaking back into the top at short notice is possible.

She is clearing her schedule, and no longer has a categoric NO to answer question of comeback.

The press conference which was aired in belgium live and she said a few times :

No, and I do not wish to talk about it. & I would like to ask you for respect, today is about unicef, I wish not to talk about tennis, if I have something to tell, we'll talk about it another time, and currently I have nothing to report.

They longer the press conference took, the more her answer weakened, this was probably done to make them stop asking, so I doubt a comeback. She also stated powerful : I am happy with my life after tennis and it gives me a lot of satisfaction.

one thing about the press and especially people on this board they can twist anything someone says into what they want it to say.... Justine actually says no in the article.......so, hey she could come back, but this article didnt confirm anything....

Did she really say that? That statement was released when she was saying no at those rumors of comeback, but I don't find it on translations of press conference.

She will be back. I am sure. She must wait for the right moment to announce it. Well, she was already in Belgium when the rumors started, so I don't understand why she didn't denied it herself, like she used to in the past ?

Also, she is going to play exhos at the end of the year with Flipkens, Cornet and Pennetta instead of McEnroe... I wonder why

i still think she will ,there does seem to be rumblings going on with her, i mean this is how it started with kim, the exhibition matches. as a competitor when you start getting back into the groove of things, there's a good chance hat fight and competitiveness will come back, ido see her coming back though, and i understand press can twist things.

I've forgot to say something : Wickmayer's father was one of the first to have predicted Clijsters' comeback and accurately. He thinks Justine's comeback tournament will be Open of Gaz de France Paris. She must hurry up to announce it if she goes there, I want to go there too !

In retrospective, Hingis will find it was not good idea to have come back.
The comeback did tarnish her leagcy.

That's because those aren't the statements the press takes here, every press wants to see her back, whoever shouts its first gets all the attention and prestige. AP wasn't even there at the press conference, only flemish, walloon, bruxelois agencies were invited.

Also she is playing at her own exhibition, the one from Charleroi, she has always played there, so it's normal she's playing there too.

I have a feeling that you don't want her to come back. There are much more hints for a comeback than a strong no.

Ok, let's sum it up :

1- Elke Rodriguez said there is something up.

2- She won't play her piece of theatre.

3- She is training much harder than said. She is working back with her former physical trainer Eric Houben who has said Justine is training like crazy.

4- Before, when there were rumors, she denied them strongly, this time, she let Carlos and his wife denying it although she was already back in Belgium.

5- Instead of playing a fun exho with McEnroe, she is going to play with Flipkens, Cornet and Pennetta at the end of the year. Her manager has said that it was for a test but he shut up then...

6- Commentators are speaking about that way too much, there are some who said Clijsters and Flipkens told them Justine was gonna back after an exho against Flipkens... and that exho is confirmed some days later. Weird.

7- Wickmayer's father has said Justine was going back to Paris (I hope indoors, I don't imagine Henin coming back to RG without preparation to her best shot) and he was right about predicting Kim's comeback (and maybe even the tournament but I am not sure at all).

Kim's team has denied those rumors while she was training, then she played an exho against Flipkens, and after they kept silent about that.... and finally Kim announced her comeback. Justine is doing the same thing : she is waiting for the right time to announce her comeback : not during US Open :tape:

1. That quote about Elke was after it been published denied by both Elke (newspaper) and Carlos (RTBF radio).

2. Her theatre was conflicting with her new role as ambassadrice for Unicef.

3. She is training with her physical trainer to perform well at her exhibition, which she takes seriously, and also the physical trainer did not say she's training like a freak, but that she's in great shape.

4. That exhibition has been planned a long time ago, she announced that this year in January.

5. Kim and Kirsten didn't even mention Justine anywhere, and I doubt they would even tell anything about before Justine announced it herself, Kim was stunned when Justine was brought up in one of her interviews and clearly stated : I don't know anything about it, and I can't discuss what is not known.

6. Wickmayer's dad is an arrogant ass, and he didn't announce Kim's comeback either, he would like to make people believe he did, but it was in fact Kirsten that hinted Kim is training very hard.

Afraid?

Especially that he/she is saying is not true at all.

1 - Justine must have asked Elke and Rodriguez to shut up or deny the rumors, just like Kim did with her coach when she had not made her mind yet, because Justine was already back to home when the rumors were getting too much. Why didn't she deny them herself, just like she did in the past ?

2- Maybe, but it is not necessarily the truth : nobody knows why she withdrew from her theatre because she has told her friend who are playing it that she had some personal reasons that she could not reveal for the moment.

3- Please, Justine has said herself earlier that she would train "a bit" for exhos but not so much...

4/5 - False and false. That's not the same exhibition anymore !!! :tape: :tape: At the beginning, it was a FUN exho !!!! Justine was going to play Mac Enroe and her tennisfriends ! But not anymore, now it will be a mini-tournament with Cornet, Pennetta and Flipkens. The organizer of Spiroudome tournament has announced that, so it is a reliable source.

Well, maybe the commentator was lying when saying Kim and Flipkens told him Justine was gonna back but one thing is sure : when I read that in HHQ forum, the exho with Flipkens had not been announced yet... and now we know it will be happen.

6- No comment. You are soooo biaised.
