In Sydney this year Caroline played Serena tough 6-7(5) 6-3 7-6(3)... She could beat Serena if they play in the final.

for the same reason the girl serena lost to the next day in the semi, serena beat a week later at the AO. It is adifferent match, different occasion. On paper Oudin beat players much tougher than the one she lost to this fortnight. If serena makes the final and caro does, throw out any h2h or prior meetings, it is a new day and the better player will reign. For me I hope that will be serena.

It depends. It would be one of those moments where she would need to use her strengths to the absolute maximum.

Which obviously are:

-Deep-High Topspin tricking an opponent to hit more balls to her backhand.
-Hit her backhand consistently well down the line.
-Serve well. (she's a good server for a pusher)
-Run down everything, making serena hit the extra shot.

If she does this well i could see her take a set for sure.

It hardly does any damage. Unless the whole court was already open.

If Serena brings a B version of her shock and awe game, I don't see her winning.

:spit:

It's a slam and not any, but USO. Serena 100% fit, 100 focused.
But first of all, the girls have to win their semis ;)

It does deal damage, Oudin is a good mover and she got exploited by the backhand more then a dozen times. Even though she might not get direct winners off it, it sets up points very nicely for her.
I think the reason why Serena has so much trouble with Dementieva could be the exact same thing why she will have much trouble with Wozniacki in the future. Wozniacki will get everything back, eventually frustrating the hell out of her opponents. Her game will keep growing.

Obviously i see serena winning this easily in 2 sets right now. Wozniacki should be incredibly nervous if she gets to the final and obviously won't live up to standard. That's why we have to see this as a learning experience. Almost all multiple grandslam champions have reached a grandslamfinal before they turned 20. This would be a great breakthrough for Wozniacki, something to build on. Her game might not look spectacular right now, but wait till she matures a bit more.

Good post, actually. When Serena was asked earlier this year about potential future stars, Caroline was the first player she named. The future may be now.

What makes a lot of people so sure this will be the final?
If there's anything you could have learned from this US Open, it's that you should never underestimate lower ranked players!

So let me rephrase it:

Caroline lost to Serena earlier this year, why couldn't she in the USO final?

Of course she could lose to Serena in the USO final. Moreover, she will lose to her.

In Sydney this year Caroline played Serena tough 6-7(5) 6-3 7-6(3)... She could beat Serena if they play in the final. The operative word is 'could'. What percentage chance are you giving here? 5%? 10%?

First of all, she DID play Serena close in Sydney. So Serena knows what she's dealing with. Second, and more important, is the time factor. Wozniacki is simply going to have much less time to reach the ball and set up than Serena. Serena's ball just travels that much faster. Serena's runs faster.

But also, if Serena's in the final, she beat Clijsters, who's an even better defender than Wozniacki. Wozniacki transition from the semis to the finals will be a total shock. Wickmayer may be many things, but preparation for playing Serena she's not.

Still don't think Caro stands a chance against Serena in a grand slam final.

Admit, this is the match-up you'd most like to see out of the ones possible.

Serena-Wickmayer has fail written all over it.

At least, Caro will keep you haters at the edge of the seat because you're so emotionally invested in her.

Plus of course Caroline will adorn Arthur Ashe better than Hickmayer.

Caro was playing shockingly aggressive tennis against Serena and stunned her , which is why she dominated for the first set and then a bit in the third. Plus Serena wasn't playing as well as she can. She wasn't playing badly , just not 100% and to the level she does in Slams.

Caro against Serena in a slam final could only have 2 outcomes:

1) Caro loses.
2) Caro loses badly.

Caro I don't think would be able to come anywhere near touching the level that Serena often plays in the last two rounds of slams.

1. Serena was a mess in Sydney
2. It's a final at a slam so phoenixrena will show up and burn Wozniacki at ease.

When Serena is playing this well at this point in a grand slam its really hard to bet against her. There have been little to no signs of doubt or slopiness to her game since the first round. We're talking about someone who has won grand slams after playing some of her worse tennis in the early rounds. Is it possible for Serena to lose to either Kim or Caroline tomorrow or Saturday? YES, Serena is human so she can lose. But USUALLY, under these circumstances it would be crazy to bet against her. Serena is the best player of her generation so every grand slam that she plays is on her racquet.

I really hope Caroline makes it to the final, which i think she should.
