Maybe New Yorkers really like belgians xD

Big support for Clijsters now actively defending Wickmayer :O

Maybe the NY crowd was annoyed that Wickmayer worked hard like everyone else to make the semifinals and it seemed like Pam was trying to belittle her.

Basically, she said, "You were a favorite here, but you will be an even bigger favorite in semis against WICKMEYER." The way she said her last name made it sound like she was saying "some unknown no talent hack club level type of player."

The way she said "and now you're gonna be even more of an overwhelming favorite against Wickmaaaayer" really sounded like Wickmayer was ranked 500th in the world... It's hard to explain, you would have to hear it, but when she said it, before the crowd booed, I thought, what a bitch... it's not like Wickmayer has not had good results lately.

And then the bitch is like... "what did I say??" ha ha ha ha

Caro was mortified. She thought it was something she had done. :haha:
Yes Caroline was petrified that the crowd was booing her for some reason and her face had that scared look on it. But since Wozniacki is like the most likable player on the WTA Tour that of course was not the case. The fans were booing Pam Shriver for her mocking Yanina Wickmayer as if she was no one and had no chance against Caroline which is ridiculous because Caroline will be feeling so much pressure to win that match and if Yanina swings freely there could be an upset or atleast a close match.

WTF Shriver, are you kidding me? She has been strange at this U.S. Open. it's like she's stoned or suffering from post pardom depression from her twins or something. Melanie's coach Brian de Villiers should have thrown her ass out of their box once she started messing with Melanie's 9 year old sister. But only at the end did Pam get strange with asking her to spell believe so I guess no one expected Shriver to try to embarrass a 9 year old girl with millions of people watching. ;( Poor girl I hope she can laugh it off.

I think so too. She immediately regretted it, but I don't think there was a whole heap of malice there. But she should know better than to act that way on a such a huge public stage.

I'm sure she would feel offended if a Belgian commentator acted that way about Oudin, who was also virtually unknown before this tournament, and whose run was equally unexpected as Wickmayer's.

ESPN Tennis commentator Pam Shriver was just found brutally beaten to death with what looks to be a tennis racquet. Upon furter investigation the racquet is believed to be owned by a Y. Wickmayer. The racquet was found near the scene of the crime with the initals on it. More information later, but such a shame way to end a run of one of the most beloved commentators in the history of tennis.

Pam Shriver booed by crowd
Serves the ugly witch right. Americans like mavericks like Wickmayer.

Her comment was pretty much premeditated, as her attitude during the Wickmayer live
match showed.
Always Bondarenko this and that, oh and that is her Sister and Princess this while Wickmayer dictated the game from A to Z. Also moaning about Wickmayer "not able to master her feelings" and then nagging that Wickmayer could have been defaulted because she smashed a ball away.
Shriver grew completely silent during the last five games. Her resentment of Wickmayer winning was very clear.

Shriver has a history against players who were not able to master their feelings, maybe that's why.

In November 1993, veteran Pam Shriver, mulling retirement, began pulling away from Kelesi in the second set of a match in Quebec City, only to find her concentration fraying as Kelesi kept stopping play to argue calls. "She was going nuts," Shriver says. "Delay after delay after delay. She was being so dramatic." Kelesi saved two match points and forced a tiebreaker. Shriver snapped. She saw Kelesi's coach talking and yelled at him to shut up. Kelesi yelled back and began to cry. Kelesi won the tiebreaker, but with the third set looming, Shriver simply left the court, walked to the club bar and ordered a drink. She had no intention of going back out to play. No one had ever pushed Shriver so far. The tournament director urged Shriver to come back, saying, "You don't want to end your career this way." Kelesi beat her 6-3 in the third.

"She almost drove me to drink," Shriver says with a laugh. "And here's the best part: When it was over she was absolutely booed off the court in her home country."

And Pam dissed herself on the "B-e-l-e-i-v-e" spelling mishap. She said that SHE was a terrible speller.

It's not her fault that a 9-yr old misspelled the word. She was just having fun.

But is it really necessary to boo her? I mean...at least she said "wickmayer" or not some "witchmaker" or something...when the crowds defend the belgian?

It was just a little boo, which i'm sure didn't hurt Pam's feelings any. Pam was just trying to be funny, and rolled with the response from those that didn't get the joke. Pam had already said a couple of times that she wouldn't know Wickmeyer "if she came up into the booth and tackled me." - which I think was hilarious, and not meant to be disrepectful, just to illustrate the fact that the girl has come to prominence from nowhere. Further evidence that Tennis fans are way too sensitive.

I just think Pam's a hoot. Did anyone see the horrified look on the 9yr. old Oudin sister when Pam gave her a pop-quiz on the spelling of believe - and just like i just had to correct on this post, the Kid messed up the "i" and "e"? "Close enough", says Pam, 'I'm a bad speller too - back to you Mary". LOL Pam is aces with me.

sandv1
Sep 10th, 2009, 08:51 AM
Caro handled that interview well.

I see now... Pam really did pronounce Wickmayer's name as if to say "of all people to reach a quarter..."

Yanina's fans should have no fear though. She'll become better known (and I guess I'll just have to get used to her vocal aggressiveness. :p ) Yanina _is_ top 30 material; she is certainly underrated.

I thought it might just have been misinterpreted. But if there was any doubt at all - that throwing her head back like that - There's no question about it.

Felt sorry for Caro that moment of terror for her. That look of pure bewilderment and fright on her face before she regained her smile and realised the crowd weren't booing Cinderella but the Ugly Sister with the microphone.

:haha::haha:Pam will never change. She's so messy. I just find it really interesting to see certain posters outraged by Pam's antics just because a player from their home country was semi dissed. Well, I'm sorry to inform you but Pam has been doing this for YEARS and most of the time when other posters complained about her behavior they were accused of "overreacting" by the same posters in here crying about that Wickmayer remark. no wonder she said it the way she did. how many seeded players has wickmayer played in reaching a grand slam semi? 1? 2 at the most? its kind of embarassing that yanina has had such an easy draw :( it wouldve been so much better if she had beaten loads of seeded players:(

Waarop Shriver de vermoorde onschuld speelde: ‘Wat heb ik gezegd?’ Wozniacki was in elk geval dodelijk gegeneerd. En met haar de rest van tv-kijkend Amerika want op internetfora werd er gisteren openlijk om haar ontslag gevraagd. let's try to clean that up...

Pam Shriver, former tennis player, now tv-commentator, showed herself of her smallest side during the on-court interview with Caroline Wozniacki. When she asked the Danish about her opponent in the semifinal, Shriver spoke the name `Wickmayer' with so much disdain, that the spectators booed her.

After which Shriver gave the impression not to know what was going on (literally: "played the murder innocence"): `what have I said? Wozniacki was deadly embarrassed anyway. And with her the rest of the American tv-audience because on Internet forums, people where already asking for her dismissal yesterday. Earlier, Shriver already managed to ask Michael Phelps to strip during a TV interview.

the grammar may stil not be perfect, but hopefully this is more understandable...

The article came from the website of the "Standaard" news paper. For those of you interested in the Belgian point of view of what's happening at the US Open, there are some more articles and movies on the English-language website of the Flemish public television station:

Serves the ugly witch right. Americans like mavericks like Wickmayer.

Her comment was pretty much premeditated, as her attitude during the Wickmayer live
match showed.
Always Bondarenko this and that, oh and that is her Sister and Princess this while Wickmayer dictated the game from A to Z. Also moaning about Wickmayer "not able to master her feelings" and then nagging that Wickmayer could have been defaulted because she smashed a ball away.
Shriver grew completely silent during the last five games. Her resentment of Wickmayer winning was very clear.

and then to think she was a b-player herself, losing her (l)only slam-final. The Belgian newspaper was right in noticing she has a (really) annoying voice.

I can't believe all the people who are missing the point here in the interview. The fans would have been rooting against any player that Wozniacki played except Oudin and probably Sharapova. In fact Caroline said on the pre-game show, they are not really against me, but just rooting for Oudin. Now when Pam mentions Wickmayer in the interview with the Caroline, the message is clear, the fans do not want Wickmayer to beat Caroline. That's al it was about. Pam said nothing wrong. I live here, so I know the fans in New York.

I live here too; Many New Yorkers don't like lack of class either.
She's been on Yanina from the start; "She could come here and tackle me and I still wouldn't know who she is." was her comment while Yanina was playing (I believe) Kvitova.

Absolutely classless from Shriver; always has been a hag.

No, they definitely booed her because of the mocking way she said "Wickmayer." She made it sound like Wickmayer had no business being in a GS Semifinal, which of course is true, but I totally understand why the crowd booed her for it.

I <3 Pam. It's well known she visits the forum. I think the Wickmayer incident was unfortunate, but I will say that it's a type of commentary that's in the culture there at ESPN when an outsider has a good result. The men there don't get shit for it, so I think she felt more comfortable about saying it the way she did.

Anyway, most of us are used to hearing Pam's whispering voice when she's close to a match. It's not like she doesn't know how to watch her volume. She was further away this time, though near a smaller court. James was in a bitchy mood about losing and obviously didn't want to be talked down by the media. When he caught wind of Pam's voice he was eager to shoot the messenger.

She was further away this time, though near a smaller court. James was in a bitchy mood about losing and obviously didn't want to be talked down by the media. When he caught wind of Pam's voice he was eager to shoot the messenger.

Again, if her can hear clearly what she said, and he did, then she was talking to loud...period..the END. Pipe down and don't get into a bitchfest with a player when you are in the wrong.

She was too loud, therefore, wrong. But if James hears her and responds to her, he's obviously not focused enough on the match--gonna lose. And he did.

Blake gave no impression that he actually heard what she said, he just heard her talking. If he heard what she said, he probably would've been even more angry.

I'm sure a lot of player's hear commentators on the side of the court, but they are either too focused (as someone else said) to hear it, or they aren't playing like garbage and trying to find someone else to blame.

At the end of ESPN's broadcast today Pam basically apologized for being too loud and even Darrin Cahill agreed that they've both been told to quiet down when in the court side commentators position in the past. Blake still shouldn't have let it get to him nor responded quite like he did. In the end it seems both parties were a bit in the wrong. It makes for some interesting viewing though. The ESPN crew (Carillo and Mary Jo) actually bragged about the fact that the incident was already up on Youtube.

He's not focused because she's talking loud and causing a disturbance, something anybody else in the stands would draw an admonishment from the referee for. What Blake said to her was, she should know better..she isn't a normal paying guest.

Are you kidding? Tennis players are notorious among athletes (only surpassed by golfers) for complaining about crowd noise. The only difference is that in this case the culprit was not a paying customer, but a tennis commentator and former player who should have known better, so he addressed her directly instead of complaining to the ref. Either way, its all normal tennis player anger at crowd noise while serving.

When's the last time you heard a high profile player openly address a fan (well, commentator in this case) for making too much noise?

And you will never convince me that players don't hear court-side reporters from time to time, most of them just have the respect to ignore it

I'm just shocked because from watching that clip it sounds like American commentators just keep on talking while the ball is in play! I haven't heard that in commentary from anywhere else - as soon as the ball is in play, the commentators stay quiet.

You always hear that Americans talk to too much (i.e. never shut up)... some good evidence right here!

One, she wasn't a fan - if she had been, Blake would have been wrong - she was a commentator, supposedly a professional who wasn't being professional.

Two, read the board please. Darren Cahill said about this incident that he himself has been told by players to shut up during play. Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

I <3 Pam. It's well known she visits the forum. I think the Wickmayer incident was unfortunate, but I will say that it's a type of commentary that's in the culture there at ESPN when an outsider has a good result. The men there don't get shit for it, so I think she felt more comfortable about saying it the way she did.

Not that anyone has tried to ascribe Blake"s loss to Pam's rudeness...except well...u. *Note* I called Pam's behavior rude...statement of fact, as she was not following tennis etiquette by remaining quiet during play. Lol, it is? Cincinnati 2008 v. Gulbis. Blake shouts at a group of Americans cheering for Gulbis in the stands "You don't sound Latvian to me!" Which seems to me like he's saying the Americans should always be for American players. Shouting at fans for daring to support his opponent isn't disrespectful?

Then twice on different occasions (the one I remember most vividly was in an indoor fall event a couple years back, though I could be wrong on the date) he shouted at an chair umpire for a bad call. His reasoning was bad calls "cost me money." It's beyond sad money is all he's thinking about in the middle of a match.

No, I don't believe either example shows rudeness. Stating his opinion isn't rude in and of itself. Now if he had called them names that would have been disrespectful. Every player argues w/lines people and if a bad call causes a loss...it does cost the player money. Now you can argue that he shouldn't be playing for money but truth is...it's what he get's paid to do

You're really defending shouting at fans for doing nothing but cheering for his opponent? That's not disrespectful? Those people paid money to watch, they could cheer for whoever they wanted. Saying Blake is not disrespectful on court is just incorrect.

Yes...and Blake can comment on their cheering if he chooses. I think he's mentally fragile and I absolutely hate his demeanor on court...but no...I've don't think he's disrespectful...dismissive arrogant entitled...on the rare occasion, but I personally think he's an all around good guy.

The only time I've seen James play live was OzOpen this year. He was playing Clement on an outside court, really hot, really packed and lots of noise from ppl around the courts. It was a tight match but James' demeanour was exemplary - there was nothing in his behaviour worth commenting on - he just played his tennis.

I certainly can't say the same about Andy when I saw him play the same week.

Okay, this are small examples, but the only one's a can speak about authoratively because I was actually there.

This is karmic justice. Blake is the guy who back in 2005 and 2006 flew his "J-Block" all over the country simply so they could harass his opponent. Go ask Feliciano Lopez, Rafa Nadal or Radek Stepanek what they think about the "J-Block." I remember when the J-Block screamed the word "******" at Nadal during the Blake-Nadal 2005 USO match (even though they later denied it).

Pam is crazy and a terrible sideline reporter but I side with her on this one. Blake was losing and losing badly and he took it out on Pam.
