I just read that alert.. is that true? I admit she will be funny but she didn't add anything when she judged on SYTYCD. Can they cancel this show and start over again?

I love, love, LOVE Ellen but I'm not sure if this move really makes any sense.

Why can't they just keep it as Randy, Kara, and Simon; three judges like the old days

Kara doesn't have enough personality to compete with simon and randy. :(

Kara doesn't have enough personality to compete with simon and randy. :(

Do you think that's why they brought Ellen in? Do bring some comedy and personality to the show? Because Paula always provided the comedy, whether it was intentional or not :haha:

I think this just means that she'll be one of the many "special guest" judges for 1 episode ;)

Paula didn't compliment all the time. People have the wrong impression of her. At times she mentioned things that only trained/experienced musicians (or perhaps those with insider info) would know. She did though, more than the other judges, focus on the positive the most.

Well I'm back to watching American Idol with Ellen on the show.
I don't think she brings a lot of new artist to her show to the capabilities of maybe say a Carson Daly but I consider her the voice of mainstream music,
The women likes music that makes her move and perhaps this year the winner won't sing a corny ass ballad that would probably not go anywhere if it wasn't a song from American Idol.

Not to be rude but the only American Idol winner IMO who can get you out of your seat even if she was singing the phone book is Fantasia.

I agree with this assessment:

Ellen, sadly, holds little of that train-wreck promise. There are too many reasons she could fill Paula Abdul's seat well and too few reasons she could blow it up.

To be more specific:

1. Ellen can do the good parts of Paula.

Paula was the nice one, the one who wanted to wrap every contestant up in a big snuggie and feed them hot chocolate even if their singing sounded like a broken transmission.

Ellen, on her talk show, gets along with everyone. On "Idol," she should have no trouble talking contestants back from the edge of the cliff Simon has just told them to jump off.

2. Ellen can avoid the bad parts of Paula.

Part of Paula's charm was occasionally releasing her inner ditz, and this often worked well next to serious Simon.

But the ditz was never necessary. It was just part of the Paula package, and long-term, to be honest, it could get annoying.

Ellen doesn't have it and we won't miss it.

3. Ellen will be just as good with music.

She probably doesn't know music as well as Paula. But for all Paula's knowledge, how often did she talk about music? Instead, she talked about soul and heart and self-realization and who knows what-all.

It's hard to imagine Ellen offering less.

4. Ellen is quick, which gives Simon some competition.

None of the other judges, or Ryan, has ever been in Simon's league for quips and one-liners. Ellen is, and the show would be crazy not to take advantage of that.

There's really only one potential danger for Ellen on "Idol": She could be too funny.

Comedians, especially good comedians like Ellen, have a hard time not telling jokes. They think in that language.

But one of the main reasons "Idol" has become so popular is that it maintains an almost Zen-level focus on the music and the contestants.

A joke, even a great joke, won't work if it redirects our attention away from the stage to the judges. So Ellen may have to swallow a lot of great one-liners just because they could interrupt the flow.

Since both Ellen and the "Idol" producers are smart, they presumably know that.

So this could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Even if it ruins all our fun.

IMO, if they wanted crazy AND HAD a singing career I would have asked cyndi lauper =) she was a great guest judge when she was on.
