Decent match overall. Very patchy at times but did what they had to do. Up 5-2 in the first set had trouble missing some simple returns. Venus wasn't as sharp today but came big deep in the first. Serena was the better player today and motivated Venus to start playing better. Did anyone watch on USO Live? That commentator Doug whatever just made me wanna :o:o:o

Congratulations Venus and Serena.

Could not believe how harsh that guy Doug Adler was on Venus. He was really hard to listen to.

What did he say about Venus ?

What didn't he say?:o He first went on a rant about how it bothers him when people mention her and Serena in the same sentence bcause Serena is the far better player. Then he tried to say she's underachieved and her 5 Wimbledon's aren't impressive if you look at her career as a whole. Then he said Serena was carrying Venus the entire match, and every winner they hit, even if Venus hit it, was due to Serena setting her up. Thank god for Gail who called him out saying he was harsh. Then when Gail tried to say her play had to do with the knee he went on a rant about how if you aren't 100% you shouldnt take the court. It's a grand slam, obviously you're gonna play through injury if it isnt career threatening. But the cherry on the sundae was when Yan/Zheng used the eye formation and some different tactics when serving to Venus and he said "I don't know why they are using these special tactics against Venus, she's not playing well so they don't need to do anything special to beat her". I mean I just didn't even know how to react, very bizarre commentator that man.

I don't post often enough, but I have to agree that this commentator, Doug (Addler?, or whoever he is) is indeed bizarre and needs to get out of the booth with such a stinkin attitude and such hateful speech.

Words like... bully...brutes...eight-armed octupus...Serena, all over the net like a bad smell, and then just berating Venus at every opportunity. WTF?

It was really hard to listen to such shameful commentary.

He also advised Yan/Zheng to hit every single ball to Venus no matter where Venus was, just to see what she could come up with. When Venus hit a really nice swinging volley and Elise Burgin said that Venus had the best swinging volley in the game and was really one of the pioneers of that shot, all Doug had to say was "there's not a lot of finesse there" and following the awkward pause Elise said "...so that's your analysis?". He said Venus would have loved the opportunity to serve out matches years ago, but now she would basically choke. It was really bizarre to hear him constantly berate her for seemingly no reason.

It never cease to amaze me how under or non-achievera always try to knock others to their level. Doug should just go and play with himself:mad:

Doug Adler was very harsh in his commentary today. Williams Sisters did enough to win today as they face Kleybanova and Makarova tomorrow.

Thank God I didn't hear this utter crap (though I wish I'd seen the match.) This Adler guy sounds like an asshole to me. But I knew that on the eve of Serena winning her twelfth that some would use it as an excuse to treat Venus as if she is a slamless scrub, not fit to tie Serena's shoelaces and diminish her accomplishments.

If winning five Wimbledons is so damn unimpressive why doesn't he go and win some? And that swinging volley that he criticises has helped to change the sport so he can shut it.

Did he watch the Australian Open doubles this year? Sure, Serena holds her own in the doubles - especially this year. At this particular slam she has really carried the team - but for years now Venus has been the more handy and skilled doubles player of the two and has anchored their team - not the other way around. But in the face of a reversal, it seems a lot of people are eager to forget that - if they ever knew it to begin with.

Exactly. Venus carried them in Australia and London. Being on a TEAM is just that -- a TEAM. If you are not playing your best, you can lean on each other to pull your TEAM through. Venus is not 100% and is clearly down because of losing early in the singles. Serena helping the team out is being a TEAM player. Too many times that I've seen, Serena is out there just swinging and being a mess and Venus, being her teammate, has helped them through. This slam, though, especially after Venus lost, Serena has been more focused and trying to urge Venus through. That's why they are the best doubles team right now.

I'm not sure that's fair either. One of the main strengths of their team is that they are so evenly balanced. If you weigh up their strengths and weaknesses I don't think you can say either one is more handy or skilled. There aren't too many gaps or weak spots from either of them that opponents can pick on, which is why they're so good and find themselves back up there as the 4th ranked team in the world. Sure they might have days when one is a bit off and the other carries them through but overall I would say they've had an equal part to play in their success. I will say earlier on Venus was the leader of the team, but their skills were always pretty much equal in doubles.

Anyway it sounds to me like this idiot commentator just does not like Venus and could not seperate is personal feelings from his professional opinion. Commentators like that should not be in the job.
