U.S. Open star Oudin now needs security

It appears Marietta tennis star Melanie Oudin is a victim of her own unlikely success.

The U.S. Open quarterfinalist was booted from her Times Square hotel because her reservation was up, Sports Business Journal is reporting. Apparently the 17-year-old didn't expect to be staying in New York so long.

Her agent, BEST Tennis President John Tobias, through the company's travel agent, Sport Travel, quickly got her into the Intercontinental. "Obviously, we will not be sending any of our players back to that hotel,” Tobias told the Sports Business Journal.

On top of that, she's been forced to use security guards to navigate hordes of autograph-seekers on her way to the practice courts, the Associated Press reported. Crowds gather in the lobby of her hotel. A photo op in Times Square got rowdy. The three major networks all sent crews to interview her after her upset win Monday over Nadia Petrova.

Even her twin sister may be putting pressure on her.

"Right now, I think she'll play Serena [Williams] in the finals," Katherine Oudin said, "and we're not going anywhere until that happens."

Oudin plays Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday night. Coverage begins at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

Poor girl. :awww: She must be feeling so much pressure and expectation, i hope her coaches are trying to keep her away from as much of it as possible. I hope she has a mature head on those shoulders.

Wow, the twin sister is very confident in her sister's abitlity to beat Caroline.

Watch out, I say the expression "arrogant american" is just arounf the corner now.

I think everyone needs to calm down.

And I'm surprised about the hotel thing; that wasn't exactly very flexible or economical on their part.

From I heard, her coach will make sure she is level headed and grounded.

Having said that, he sure cannot control family members who may unknowingly ramp up the pressure on Oudin, thnking it is their way of supporting her.

It is also a bad PR move. At least in the short run.

I am sure hotels are fighting to giveher rooms or even a suite.

It will give her exposure and free publicity.

Since JJ booked her room apartment in NYC for 2 weeks, I think she should invite Oudin to sleep over.

I'm quite sure that if they could have extended her reservation they would have. it probably would have meant cancelling someone else's reservations possibly and that wouldn't have been fair. her agent needs to stop being so dramatic and her sister needs to stop trying to jinx serena. :fiery:

JJ must have left a long time ago. Somehow, I don't think the conversation will go that well.

Hey, "Miss No Weapon", do you need a nice room? I have some time left I have to go.

I am just curious, if a player has an early exit, does s/he get reimbursment from the hotel ans if s/he wishes to leave before her time is up?
Anybody?

wow when others talk abut huge expectations for their relatives like Richard has done since 1997 those comments are "great" but when others say it they are "arrogant".

Anyway this girl won´t reach the final, she is losing today.

Who does her sister think she is? Richard Williams?

I'm sure more had happened behind the curtain. I've yet to heard a hotel refusing to extend room occupancy when they have the rooms. Why turn down $$$ in this economy? Maybe the travel agent did a lousy job? Maybe some misunderstanding?

We're starting to see unnecessary pressure from the media--they don't want to miss the bandwagon. I hope Mel can shake them off and just concentrate on her game.

GET REAL, NOONE CAN JINX SERENA! The hotel was stupid to force her out. Perhaps they rent by the hour to regular customers? Just kidding!

I agree.

Also, was she turfed out the Intercontinental or is that the hotel that has been found for her?

It is awful PR on the hotel that said her reservation had run out! I stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Times Square in April - I thought it was lovely and was planning to stay there again when we go back to NYC so I hope it wasn't that hotel!

I think the pressure was highest agains Petrova, because she is more beatable than Elena and Maria and it was at a later stage. She should cope ok.

According to this article the hotel was trying to charge them more! :(

"Just for starters, the Oudin clan was forced out of the Marriott Marquis in downtown Manhattan Tuesday because the group's reservations had expired and the hotel wanted to double the rates. The Oudins moved instead across the street, to the Intercontinental"

Shades of the one she :bigcry: bumped off :bigcry: in Rnd 2, when Lena had to buy an extra dress for her semifinal in 2000.

Even I can't hate Oudin though.

Silly. She obviously had the special U.S. Open players' rate for the first week, and that ran out.
They probably could have re-booked online and gotten a decent price.
Or, pay the extra few hundred for a few more days - so not to change a winning routine. Not like she didn't bank, what, $200,000 for making the quarter-finals?

Her agents probably tried to strong-arm the hotel with "Don't you know who Melanie Oudin IS?" and they probably got a blank stare, so they pulled her out of there in a huff. It's the Marriott Times Square; they don't have a huge problem filling rooms.

They should have taken care of this as soon as the reservations were close to running out, extending it then. Again, not like she hasn't banked plenty. Probably too distracted by all the new "business deals."

Instead, the distraction of packing up all her gear and moving. I also heard she had to share a room with her mom at the new hotel.
