High quality stuff from both players. Neither played bad. Would've been nice to see it go 3. Great to see Sanchez serve and volley like that. Wish more girls on tour were capable of such tactics. When serve and volley is successful like that it is so beautiful to watch.

Serena played well :D

Didn't like Serena's 'lazy and careless till broken' attitude. And as much as I like variety, going for a volley after each and every 1st serve was just a little to much from Maria Jose :tape: But good match overall

Nice hand-shake to end the match, strong showing from the best player in the world.

Sanchez used the serve and volley style alot but it was not enough to beat Serena.

Very entertaining match :yeah:

MJMS did a great job of disrupting Serena's rhythm throughout the match, keeping her guessing with some strong first serves and skilful volleying. It's refreshing to watch her style of play and she should be proud of her efforts today. Shame about the 2 DFs to hand Serena the vital break near the end though.

Serena did lapse mentally at the start of the second set but generally I'm fairly happy with what I saw.

Sep 4th, 2009, 07:55 PM
just caught the last 2 games but does MJMS always have such a low ball toss? insanely low, her and Bammer should play doubles together and try to average their ball tosses out to a respectable height

Solid stats from Serena minus the 4 DF :yeah:

Good match! MJMS played some good stuff there, shame about the ending with the double faults. I love her game when it's on like that, so graceful, nothing forceful about it. She really has excellent volleys, definitely some of the best on tour and it shows as she has won the most titles this year. :worship:

Good stuff from Serena as expected, keeping up her great form from the previous round. Not used to her playing quite this well so early on. This was an ideal test for her. Daniela shouldn't be a problem.

Both players played very well, great to see! Serena did her job, and did everything she needed to do. Maybe at *1-0 30-0 she should have held, but Maria came up with some pretty good shots!

Cakewalk draw? Really? Only 2 other seeds would've beaten MMJS in straight sets today! Her return game may not be spectacular, but she backs up herself SOOOO well on serve. It's very hard to break her, i was so glad Serena got the break early in both sets! Really happy with this win and her effort in this tournament, it goes without saying that she would have lost this at a non-slam. Took a lot of effort to flick this one away.

Has MMJS ever been THRASHED? Just seems like she has too much game for it

Martinez Sanchez put on a strong showing today. Really cobtributed to a fine contrast in styles with her unconventional and slightly archaic shot-making. She has such superb reflexes at the net, and it really derailed Serena's attempts to just pass at will. Shame her serve became erratic in that 5-5 game, where she mixed in wonderful varieties of serves with two shakey DF's.

I've really become a fan of her funky, flat BHDTL. It reall is quite a vicious shot that allows her to open up the net. Good performance overall, on a surface where on paper, she looked totally out-matched.

Serena had the nessecary test before the second week. Great returning in the first set, and her serve looked secure for the most part. I felt she got a little tentative with her shots mid-way through the second set, especially when the Spaniard started net-rushing witch such pinache. However, she never looked likely to lose.

unlike the other two idiots...all i mean is that while the style may be pretty to watch when it contrasts with another style, it doesn't make it successful if you still lose  an example may be karlovic v federer, or the baby faced croat who had mono (can't remember his name) who played serve and volley also v federer...pretty to watch the contrast in styles but it's not successful if you don't win...i don't give A for effort like most of the people here...i can't deem the style to be successful if you lose, and lose in straight sets

Well let's look at Maria-Jose's results this year, she holds the most titles of anyone including 2 in singles and has regularly been making the R32 stage of slams for a while. Considering where her career was before last year, I'd say it's been a huge success playing the way she has.

She was never going to achieve anything against Serena by playing from the baseline. She happened to be playing the defending champion who has some of the best returns in the game ever, and she still made it competitive. Her serve and volleying was effective, she executed it well.

:rolls: :bs: she holds a whole lot of MM titles...not even big tier titles but actual MM titles...you think that means something??? and making the R32 at slams regularly shows success now?? next thing you're going to say she's having a better year than serena because of those MM titles

as i said...effective would be a better word cause it posed a challenge at MOST....but to be successful you have to win...you're giving her an A for effort  effective doesn't cut it if at the end of the day you still don't win...but i forgot how this forum operates

Of course they mean something! My goodness not everyone gets to number 1 and wins slams you know. Doesn't mean they cannot have successful careers. For her, serve and volleying has been a successful tactic. As I said, the match would have been alot more one sided had she played any other way. She was not expected to beat Serena today, or even get 8 games.

And no you're completely wrong about having to win. Two players can be playing well and executing their gameplans successfully in the same match, just so happens one is much better than the other that they win the match (like with this match). Maria-Jose got to the R32 and pushed the defending champ to a 7-5 second set, and really should have done a bit better than that too. For Maria-Jose Martinez-Sanchez, who barely even played on the tour a few years ago and hasn't ever gone deep in slams, that is success.

She lost to Radwanska. I was there for the first set and MJMS didn't not play well - she could barely find any first serves and she rarely serves and volleys on her second serve.

In fact, she didn't win a single main-draw grass-court match (lost to Medina Garrigues in Eastbourne as a LL :help:)

I think it seemed to work so well because Serena

hasn't seen that much of it in years. The lobs

negated it in the first set but in the second

Sanchez went on a hot streak and got a lot of good

first serves in that allowed her to come in and be

effective. Then in that second to the last game

Serena copped her attitude and ended it.
