I mean this is a serious question,as all i've been hearing is that Serena does nothing in the OTHER tournaments! Yet she played a full schedule, so why is the media and the ignorant haters lying by saying that Serena ONLY shows up for slams ? I mean players can't win em all. I mean if I recall she made the Miami final. (the fifth slam). I would like someone to explain away how Serena got to #2 with slams only and not caring about other tourneys. Last I heard she enters them and plays just like what the other players do. Do people expect Serena to win them all, while other players are ok with going out before the quarters in every tourney while never owning a slam title?

Her 4 slams and Miami results are worth in total 7200 points. Thats more than Venus who is at no 3 with 6865 points. Thats why she is no 2 without showing outside of the slams.
Even taking out Miami (the only tournament outside the slams she cares about) she would still be somewhere between no 2 and no 5 if she only had 10 3rd rounds in her 10 other tournaments.
The slams are given enough weightage but the tour may as well shut down if the rankings are to be counted for only 4 slams a year.

B/c if Serena actually cared and showed up for a few other tournaments, she'd be a clear #1. Her record at majors is incredible while her record at tour events is pedestrian.

If I remember correctly, slam points were given more weight. She's #2 b/c the points given for slams is enough to give her a top 5 ranking

Seriously.

There was a point in 2003 when Serena was holding the #1 ranking with only eight tournaments in the previous twelve months. Of course, she had all four slam titles. She only has three now.

These are good results. Not far off from what Dementieva has, honestly. Serena just has the losing streak on clay (Marbella-Rome-Madrid) and then the Cincinnati 3R.

The slams are what make her #2 instead of Dementieva, Jankovic, Kuznetsova, Venus though. Her optionals aren't THAT awful.

That is because Venus ony cares about the YEC, dubai and Zurich others Venus would be a clear no. 2
Then of course one wonders how venus in no. 3 have bombed out at ll slams bar wimby, it is because ElenaD only gets up to play serena blah blah blah....
Now if Kuzy can garner eough points to mkae no.1 order would be restored!

She doesn't put much effort into the other tournaments because she's fat, lazy and arrogant. I hope she gets injured.

Actually she is showing up, then she lose, I think she just can't play her best out of slams, because she can get injured. Her margin over others players isn't good enough, she can't win WTA tournament with the level she is playing out of slams.
Anyway, we all know rankings is strange.

We can't really blame her for that, though. She has to pay her furniture bills from something

So.. since Miami is a slam () she just showed up for a slam, like usual. I don't get your point.

You could win all four slams and still be ranked #2. It's designed that way, so you have to support the tour to be ranked #1, which is entirely fair.

Good post! She just had that terrible streak in the spring, she hasn't been WOEFUL. She started the year ULTRA-solid in non-slam events, just that Safina picked it up on the dirt, and Seren had some problems.

She just needs a Premier 5 title in the fall and a good showing at the Open.
