There has been a lot of drama matches:
Ivanovic loss, Venus win, Oudin and Shvedova wins, Clijsters 2nd round win, Safina was error filled but they were very dramatic... So far the drama is high!!

I“m liking this tournament, despite ana“s loss

I love upsets.:hearts:

Virgina Wade as said although ATP is more exciting at the top of the game however when you leave the top 5 there aren't many exciting players and very few upsets.

Yeah but it's a bit bipolar isn't it?

we've gone from very occasional upsets of higher seeds in slams in the first 2 rounds, to over half the 32 seeds losing by the end of R2.

You would hope there's some middle ground between the rock and the hard place.

Just hoping Sharapova or Azarenka can take the title out.

I do not want another williams slam.

I have to say it reminds me of that Saturday in 2007 a little, seeds were falling like flies as well. But it was 3rd round.

just shows what garbage the wta is.
when any garbage player can beat any top player.
its a disgrace.
wta needs to be contracted from professional tennis.
let the girls find bf from the atp players and be done w/ this joke of a tour

I think the WTA is at an all-time low for the Open Era. We don't even have one dominant player and a crappy rest of the field. The entire tour is just mediocre.

Why doesnt Steffi come back? I'm sure she could be top 5.

Wonderful one dominant player, how interesting it would be when one player would win slam after slam

I highly doubt that.

Federer dominating was much better. Serena dominating 2002-2003 was much better.. I'd take Steffi Graf's domination mid-90s over this anyday.

The current state of the tour is really bad. I had hope for the USO but it's not looking good with seeds falling all over the place.

That's why the ATP's popularity soared post 2003?

Federer dominating we saw GREAT TENNIS. We're not seeing that right now on women's tour.

A break of the decades long US domination of the men's tour has something to do with it I'd imagine.

It definitely isn't more popular in the US.

And in the slams, Serena's been producing for the most part, good tennis. 90% of people who watch tennis watch only the slams.Serena losing in Marbella doesn't mean much in the scheme of things.

The tour can't survive by those 90% of people. It needs sponsors, it needs support for it's WTA events. Casual fans don't keep the tour running.

And the break of US domination has nothing to do with popularity soaring worldwide. And tennis is much more popular then it was towards and shortly after Sampras's retirement.

And at AO, Serena produced in the final.. at RG, not much at all.. at Wimbledon, i'll give you that.. but that's 1/3 slams so far. And that's one player. :help:

I'd argue that it is. Americans don't watch soccer unless the US team is actually winning. Same with tennis: Americans don't tuen in unless Roddick or the WS are playing these days.

Conversely, other countries are more likely to tune in now that South Americans, Eastern Europeans, Britons, Frenchmen, etc. are doing well.

And the WTA is more profitable now that it's ever been. No evidence of decreased revenue due to lack of quality has ever been presented by doomsayers.

This isn't the WWF where you can script good matches. Sports leagues often suffer from lulls in quality and/or depth. They survive. The MLB survived the 80's, the NBA survives the late 90's/early 2000's after Jordan retired, and so on.

I dont think so. Then the country wouldnt very much be into tennis when Seles and Graf were playing and ratings for Fed-Nadal wouldnt be so high.

Ratings in America obviously go up when the tours biggest stars play(WS and Roddick are some of those), but they're not going to be more likely to tune in if Mardy Fish or Vania King is playing. And fans are more likely to tune in to watch good tennis. Fans will be created by good tennis. Do you think people are going to be inspired to go buy tickets to the local tournament after watching any WTA matches on tv? What big attractions will draw fans to the stadiums?
