Sabine was down 0-3 in the second set and came back to win it.

She had MPs at 5-3 and df to be broken. :o
Had a bp at 5-6 but missed an easy fh into the net.

She falls on MP and her ankle looks really bad.

Too bad Sabine.

Rodionova does not deserve any bashing here, she was put in such an awkward situation. She just had one of her biggest wins, I mean clearly an odd situation. I feel sorry for Lisicki, but the criticism of Rodionova is really unwarranted here and I'm not a fan of Rodionova by any means.

To criticize her reaction after winning though is a little harsh I think, yes she was in typical form during the match, but it's not as if she jumped up and down and screamed when she won, she was subdued and I think treated the situation fairly. I'm sure, I'm in the minority in this but just putting in my opinion.

Yes, I caught the end of the match on Tennis Channel as well...I just don't like Anastassia at all, and this proves why I don't like her. She was acting a fool, and then when Sabine got hurt, she really didn't do anything...at least she could have gone over and asked if everything was alright...no she stood a good 15 feet away. Gross.

On a side note, you would think at a Grand Slam one could get ice or a trainer without having to wait 10 minutes...<img>

Maybe there will be an interview and we can get the answer to that. Should Rodionova gone over to Lisicki, probably. But, my entire point was that I didn't think her reaction to the situation was as horrible and atrocious as some think. The situation is so incredibly awkward, she had just come back and it was probably such a satisfying win, and for her to win like that I'm sure was very weird and she didn't know how to react. It was all just very odd.

I was rooting my heart out for my Sabine, but in all honesty, Sabine choked during this match at 5-2 in the 3rd set. She had 10DF's and sooner or later you pay for thos DF's.

Radionova deserved the match. You have to put players away when your up 5-2 in the 3rd set.

I put no blame on Radionova for not walking over to Sabine. Why make things worse for Sabine when the damage was already done. :)

When Lisicki was crying out in pain Rodionova was signing autographs and then attempted to do an on court TV interview  During the match she was disputing calls, arguing with the umpire, being sarcastic with the line callers and accused Lisicki of not showing her the new balls (the commentator said Sabine did) Naturally she took her toilet break when she lost the second set too. Good luck in the next round

I agree Anastasia can be a bitch sometimes. But the critcism in this thread is totally unwarranted.

She didn't celebrate her win at all, made an attempt to go over, told the umpire for someone to help her and was put in an extremely uncomfortable position. They clearly didn't have any ice ready, otherwise someone would have gotten it. It isn't like anyone else was doing anything, Anastasia didn't cause her to fall over and she did more then those linesman who just stood there over her, staring.

Point is, Sabine was being helped after a while and Nastya has the right to acknowledge the crowd and sign some autographs. It isn't like she is a doctor, there wasn't anything more she could have done for Sabine.

For me, she did nothing wrong and has the right to celebrate her win, even if she hardly did. People here are just ready to attack anyone who isn't one of there favourites.

On a side note, I do feel for Sabine. She is a good player and I am a fan of hers. There is a lot more we haven't seen from her and I'm convinced she'll be big.

Petkorazzi
Sep 3rd, 2009, 09:55 PM
I also do think it was a bit too rude from Nastya, but she's never been known for kindness and I don't think it would have been fair if she just walked away off the court, it's one of her biggest wins after all and for a player of her level a grandslam R3 doesn't mean little. But of course, some more niceness would have been good.

We've seen players totally ignore their opponents lying on ground in pain. We've seen players pump their fist left and right when their opponents have to retire because of an injury. That's not what happened today. Rodionova could have been "nicer", but she clearly acknowledged Lisicki's injury and didn't go overboard in celebration.

And she actually played quite well to fight back from 2-5.

:spit: Sabine's injury is much more important than a match win. Are you seriously that retarded and that far up the ass of any player representing Australia that you can't see the retardedness of Nasty's actions? It's basically like seeing someong get hit by a car and just walking away.

I'm no fan of Rodionova but this is NOT walking away from a car accident sorta thing at all. There are linesmen, first aid people, WTA trainers, officials all around the court. Yes Rodionova could have shown more concern but there are people there who can do their job much better and attend to Lisicki's injury!

If this REALLY is a car accident, what about all the hundreds of fans and supporters sitting around the stadium looking?!?!

And for those of you talking about booing Rodionova on court and calling her a whore, how is your behaviour different from her supposed bitchiness??? Double standards, I say.

Sabine's injury is much more important than a match win. Are you seriously that retarded and that far up the ass of any player representing Australia that you can't see the retardedness of Nasty's actions? While her opponent is crying her eyes out and fucked up her ankle, she's all clapping, signing autographs and doing interviews? That's LOW. And if you can't realise that, then it says a lot about you.

Welcome to the real world, where people have jobs and are specialised in what they do, especially on a tennis court. When a player is injured, there are medical people who will attend to it, in a much more professional way than another player ever would.

If you think what Rodionova is doing, basically getting on with her own business and letting the experts do what they do best, is LOW, then I have no idea how you are going to survive in mainstream society. Grow up, I suggest?

Please, no one was asking her to perform keyhole surgery, but just to check if Sabine was ok, show a bit of humility? It took the physio AGES to arrive, did you even see it? It was just the linespeople standing over her and lynn welsh helping her with ice and a towel resting under her head. That's what a human being should do when they see someone in pain.

If you happened to be at work and one of your colleagues fell over and was clearly in a lot of pain on the floor would you just turn away and continue what you were doing, knowing that someone else would come in a second and see them and help them?

Well, there are no physios, emergency workers or professional trainers stationed within my workplace, so of course I would have to go check out a colleague in pain. But if there are 10 other people in the office who are already attending to him/her, and I was sure they knew what they were doing, then I would get on with my business. Simple.

Theres a difference between leaving it to the professionals as you say she did, and showing a small bit of compassion to a clearly distressed and upset opponent. Is that really hard to do? Its what any decent person would do, and what 99% of the players on the tour would do.

It was all just very odd.
exactly my thought. We should at least wait for the interview.

Why can't we accept that not everyone shows compassion even if she feels bad?!?! We are all different people - some people prefer to wear their hearts on their sleeves while others don't feel the need to dramatise things. Yea she could have shown more concern but that is the only thing she did wrong. If this was a player who had a reputation for being nice nobody would have a problem with what she did, as for the autographs everbody was asking her for them what was she supposed to do. With her distressed opponent laying in agony, Rodionova - who needed three qualifying wins just to make the main draw - was unable to really celebrate her equal-best showing at a grand slam.

"I was kind of scared to come to her. I felt really bad," Rodionova said.

"I didn't really know what to do and that's definitely not the way I wanted to finish the match.

"I feel sorry for her. It's sport, but I don't want anyone to be hurt. I hope she gets better and that it's not a really bad injury."

but she did just that. she did go to sabine, but hesitated to go all the way, because she probably didn't know what to do and what to say. and it seemed that she actually said to the umpire to come down, get some ice etc. to me she did look like she cared, very much so.

I was at this match. I was the one cheering for Rodionova from 2-5 down COME ON ANASTASIA! YOU GOT THIS! YOU GOT THIS! That'd be because I fully expected Lisicki to close at any second. Nastya made a nice fightback from match point (mostly due to Lisicki's errors, but some nice net play too). I couldn't believe Nastya had managed to break and serve for the match at 6-5. She gets to match point and pulls Lisicki out wide. Now, since I'm up in the overhang, I didn't see Sabine fall; I was busy watching Rodionova doing what I thought was a big put away forehand. I scream COME ON! and as I'm standing up, I see Liscki writhing on the ground in pain.

FAIL.

Now that that little anecdote is over, let's assess.
Nastya was completely out of this match, and somehow found a way to claw her way back. She was fully deserving of a huge celebration, and with Lisicki's fall, she was deprived of that. All things considered, the little acknowledgment of the crowd she gave was so insignificant compared to what would have happened had Lisicki simply lost the point.

And for those who think Rodionova's a cold-hearted bitch, watch the whole video. She clearly went over to see Sabine as a first instinct (in spite of Rodionova likely being the LAST PERSON ON THE PLANET Sabine wanted to see after blowing a 5-2 lead and two match points), before looking to Lynne Welch and being told to back away. She went about her business fairly discreetly. She didn't jump up and down. She signed a few autographs (if she hadn't, those buggers would have went crazy :P) and conducted an interview with a film crew that was waiting. Not like she invited them over.

Back to the tape...
If you notice, you can clearly hear Lisicki shouting "The match is over, who cares?" Now, not to discount any pain Lisicki was in, but perhaps as painful as the accident was, maybe she was just a little bit more distraught that she managed to blow a 5-2 advantage and two match points. Which makes you think...how would Sabine reacted if Rodionova successfully ran over to her to ask her if she was alright (dumb question, she was obviously anything but all right). Think when Nadia Petrova accidentally whacked Huber (or Black) with a volley, and how Huber (or Black) screamed at Nadia to go away, even though she was trying to help and called to get ice.

Seems like this very easily could have been a very different story had Lynne Welch hadn't stopped Rodionova. Maybe she anticipated that reaction? Not that it wouldn't have been unjustified, but it would have made Lisicki look terrible in the face of this kind of scrutiny, and Rodionova look like the good Samaritan spurned in spite of her trying to do a good deed.

But like i said at the start, I was crazily cheering for Rodionova throughout the third set, and the mood was jovial. Although, maybe some Lisicki fans wanted to strangle me, but I didn't get that vibe at all. Everyone did what they could. The fans just stared at Lisicki in morbid fascination. Another thing Lisicki must not have enjoyed.

On the whole, it was a fabulous comeback from Rodionova. Pity she couldn't properly celebrate, or win her succeeding round over Bonderanko (despite having two set points at 5-4 on her serve...*eyeroll*)

The end! :)
