The LA Times this morning reported that there will be no LA tournament next year. That tournament is moving back to the La Costa tennis center where the San Diego event was held for many years.

AEG owned the event until this year. It was recently purchased by Octagon, who decided to move it to San Diego.

Excellent move IMO. I loved the San Diego tournament, while the Carson tournament is a disaster

The LA event was the only one on tour without a title sponsor, so it was just a matter of time really.

Not a bad idea - whenever I watched any coverage of this event the stands were 3/4 empty and this was the semis and final.

They don't have those anymore. It will be $700,000 Premiere.

Great news! Always preferred the San Diego tourney to the current LA one, and the crowds really haven't been that great in recent years.

A venue I think they should bring back is the one the LA tournament used to be played at, dunno the name though.

It will also be a mixed event in the future. The Men's Indianapolis event is moving to SD.

FANTASTIC news! La Costa is a beautiful facility, and the fans love the tennis down there. It was always an awesome event, and I'm so glad to here it's coming back.

LA had a great stadium, but... that was it. Not great ambiance, low attendance... When was the last time the LA area lacked a WTA event?

Some quotes from Maria, supporting getting rid of the Carson tournament:

"One of the pitfalls we had was that it was all the way in Carson. I think for the tennis fans that live in the sort of West Hollywood, Beverly Hills area, they didn't have much enthusiasm to make an hour or hour-and-a-half drive in rush hour."

Very true, Maria. Calling it the LA tournament was a bit of misnomer, as it is in such an inconvenient location for most LA residents. Even the "local" players want it moved

Carson is also too ghetto for posh fans in WestHollywood and BeverlyHills, and tennis fans don't like to get down and dirty like other sports fans.

"Like omg like what do you want to do today? Want to like go to Carson and like watch Maria SharaPOVA? uh?"

"Carson?!? Where the heck is that? Isn't that like right next to like Compton?"

"What's Compton??"

"Why would we like go to that ghetto place? That's like where people like get shot all the time."

"Really? We'll be like inside a tennis stadium with bunch of people you know. like with security guards and everything."

"Tennis? I thought we'd be going to a fashion show. Wasn't Maria on the cover of like teen Vogue last year or something?"

"No Becky, Maria Sharapova like plays tennis. She's like really good and everything."

"God Allie, your crazy if you think I'm going to drag my BMW down there. My car isn't bullet proof you know."

"Oh it's ok, we can like take my hummer."

I think it was just because of the sponsor???

I find this pretty sad. Carson (which is not ghetto, btw) really had an awesome stadium. And a few years back (I think when Serena played and did really well), the attendance actually broke the record for any tennis event in the L.A. area, including the men's!

It's a shame such a big city and market is going to be stuck with one Mickey Mouse men's tournament, and that's it.

I think it was just because of the sponsor???

i thought there were some issues? something to do with the local complaining about the event? or maybe i'm getting confused with another tournament
