I didn't find it offensive at all. It was hyperbole to emphasize a point-- that is there is another American to talk about.

It wasn't a statement meant to be taken literally or as an insult. It was a rhetorical devise.

Remember this rule when watching tennis: don't take anything a commentator says seriously or literally.

We've been waiting for another American female to show some serious potential since the mid-90's. I for one am more than happy we have one. Right now, she seems more Meghann Shaughnessy/Chanda Rubin than Serena, but so what? Who's the last Ameican player not named Williams who could take out two top ten players in a summer? At the slams no less?

Next year, I want a Chibulkova-Oudin US Open final, so all the short people can riot in the streets.:)

The first thing to come to his mind is to say'Serena and Venus Who?'
I pretty sure Serena and Venu find it weird to heard that. But you know they are high class than me.
I wish Serena was in that commentator box the moment he said it :tape:

The overreacting isn't surprising in the least bit. American commentators have always been searching for a GWH and when the USTA couldn't produce homegrown champions they imported one. However, I like Melanie Oudin because she has fight, determination, and temperament in pressure situations.

I'm going to wait and see what Melanie offers in terms of consistency before crowning her the next potential American champion. We've been through this a few times. A low ranked American player gets a win over a top seed in a slam and all of the sudden she's the FUTURE. Time will tell.;)
