just to clear this up for the once a year tennis fans..

1st serve is a killer, alot of easy points from it. This makes up for any double faults.
2nd Serve is also very good when it lands in.

wins most exchanges once ball is in play with her MASSIVE winners.

she can play awful and come back from a set down in 2 matches back to back and still look likely to go deep in the US Open.

Won the most tournements in the WTA this season.

Consistant all year round.
Won 36 of her last 42 matches

She owns the Clay

she has made at least the semi finals in all 3 slams so far in 2009 oh and semis in the 2008 US Open.

Worst No.1 ever??? (man with head in hands)

Hope this helps.

Dawson.

If Barrois and the girl in the first round hadn't choked on a chicken bone she would've been packing her bags for Russia like her friend Dementieva.

Safina has done this far too often for it to simply be her opponnet choking. Clearly she does something when she's trailing in a match , unless that match is a GS final.

I hate to be rude, but did you not see that first round? Barrois up a break in the third, then had three break points to get it back today shanks it with some hideous errors and doubles.

The reason she is world number one is that Serena Williams has failed to live up to seeding in nearly every non-slam tournament in the past 12 months.

This really is the only reason. In any other era Safina wouldn't be number one, regardless of how good she actually is.

Safina's 1st and 2nd serve is not that GREAT or she wouldn't be struggling like she is now with it. Her 2nd serve is quite attackable. It certainly does not make up for the 10+ double faults every match as you say. Any decent returner like WS, Azarenka, Sharapova and a few others can accurately and consistently return her serves. Against other top players she does not win most of the exchanges because they can equal or surpass her in power and MOVEMENT. You have a valid point on consistency.

Safina!!!

Yeah she has so far choked when it comes to the finals of a major)

Apart from that her record as a #1 is stellar.

Safina has had her bad patches too. Between the AO and Clay court season she didnt light it up, she certainly hasnt lit it up during the US Open series (except Cincy)

 Safina fans should be happy that she has a draw full of flops. If she played someone with more experience in the first two rounds she would be on a flight back to Russia.

Shes #1 because her draws are a joke.... Basically, Safina had a great last year....and she played EVERY tournament....so shes got a lot protecting her ranking... at the start of the year yeah, she was gonna get to #1 because of how well she had done last year.... but now the reason shes stayed #1 is because her draws are a joke. shes not playing anyone.... The second she plays a real player she gets embarrassed.....Safina had form, she doesnt anymore and hasnt since the clay season.....she looks a mess on court....

i guess there is so much talk going on about her being number one because she is fighting with herself so much.
I dont think ive seen a number one player struggle so much...despite the fact that she ends up winning most of her matches

That's odd. Serena's only played 13 events this year, yet it says 15. I know she skipped IW which is mandatory, but where is the other one coming from? Unless there's some other ridiculous rule that I'm missing out, which is probably the case.

But anyways back to the issue at hand. Why is Safina number 1? Pure and simple: Luck. Right place, right time and all that stuff. Oh and she's also a fighter and very hard working yada yada yada. But luck is a very important reason for her success... and her coach... and Serena's lack of motivation in MM events....

What part of She got the ranking playing great tennis, and shes holding on to it, becvause as the #1 seed her draws are a joke..... Its like (much worse) when Justine was #1 at the start of 08 lookin a mess on court....

Luck has nothing to with that.

Oh how many times will we have this 'debate'? Safina is number one, Serena number two. Safina plays consistenly and goes deep in most tournaments she plays, but hasn't had the Slam victory. Serena shows up at the Slams and doesn't do much for the rest of the year. If rankings were based on Slams alone, Serena would be #1. However, it's not, it's based on play over the last 12 months and Dinara has been more consistent on a week-to-week basis, which is why she's #1. Now, let's just enjoy the US Open, watch Serena win another Slam and then wait until Australia before she gets another title, whilst Dinara keeps reaching the semifinals/finals of regular tour events.

Giving Safina credit here: when she's on fire she can hit very deep and move you around like a yoyo. However more often than not, in important matches she falls over like a cement brick. She also has no plan B, whatsoever, which is just fail.
