Well, sounds like there really is a very promising youngster among US girls :rocker2:.

YES YES YES YES YES!!
Hopefully Sharapova can win today, and have a chance against Oudin to go through to the 4R!

And Melanie made a new fan. :D She played some awesome tennis!

Now I've realised Dementieva is out, I'm actually kinda sad too. But I'm hoping this means well for Sharapova.

I just continue to be impressed. Awesome performance from Oudin, so clean of both wings with great consistency and accuracy. Good footwork and impeccable attitude - a real star in the making. Surprising too, considering some posters here were saying she would never break 100 at the beginning of the year :spit:

Well done Melanie :yeah: Cannot wait to see how she develops over the next year or so.
Elena  just outplayed on the day, I suppose. Nothing much she could have done differently.

What a pathetic/immature third set from elena. All the experience on her side, and failed on serve like always. Serving like shit, making so many forehand errors... She broke back every time to get back on serve but every servicegame she was down 0-30 on her own serve because she started with 2 errors. Again she fails against a grinder. I just don´t get it with her... You'd think with her experience she'd know what to do in such a situation, oudin was even crying at 1-3 for godsakes. Elena deserves a big fuck you for today.

Well done oudin, you did great! Congrats! :bounce:

she reminds me alot of jennifer capriati. not only the physique, but also the great speed, groundstrokes and fighting spirit :D great match :worship: i just didn't like the comment from one tennis commentator who said "venus and serena who?" i'm very happy for oudin and i think she could be the next big thing for america in the future, but they're a bit overacting.

Oudin is the future of american tennis! What a fighter this kid is! I hope she does well in her career and becomes a major champion. Elena...you had a great summer season.

:worship::worship::worship:

Oudin played like a TOP 10 player, unbelievable. That second set she barely missed, and I thought she'd cool off eventually but she maintained it until the end of the match.

Elena. There's not much more she could have done in my opinion. She needed to be more offensive, and she was very indecisive when coming forward - caught in no mans land a number of times - but it would have taken a mighty effort to beat Oudin today. The way she saved those first two MP's was  though.

Match of the tournament so far for me, by miles.

I'm :speakles:.

YES YES YES YES YES!!
Hopefully Sharapova can win today and then go into the 4R!!

And Melanie made a new fan. :D

oooooooo Dan

Melanie consolidated in the 3rd set leading 1-0,Melanie prevailed in game 2 set 3 coming from behind at 15-40. That was the turning point of game 3 going up 2-0

Melanie was ahead 5-4 in the ist set, but Dimentieva took the next 3 games. Give Melanie credit for never losing her composure for winning set 2 and then withstanding the pressure to close out the match. Can you say Melanie? :) :bounce:

Omg a young talent coming through in a tight grand slam match. This wasn´t really about Dementieva playing poorly, but Oudin playing really well. I think she stands a great chance to beat Sharapova, if she can keep her composure again, in what will be a big night match.

Dementieva was the only one in the draw who could get Serena out... now the title is hers

Elena... no words, but Oudin played her best, and she´s not a pusher, like jankovic said, since she had more winners and was really aggresive
I want her to upset Sharapova in round 3

was concerned about the score. Lena got the most toughest opponent for 2nd round.

Lena, too passive, always hitting to fh, why not to backhand? :help: I had some hopes but not too high. Oh well I'm not your fan for a month so I got used to it ;) but Mummy Vera needs to go away to Moscow and stay out of the court :fierce:

Melanie, well done, was the better player today and totally deserved it. Hats off. Though her c'mon pissed me off, sounded like Hewitt :o Now you'd better def Sharapova! or McHale ;)

I agree that this girl is very good, but the moment she hits a good server, it will be tough for her.

That said, Oudin, I have to say, I was even rooting for you a little in this case (if only because Maria may have an easier time).

Lena D, just not meant to be my darling. Better luck next time :(

Oudin played like a TOP 10 player,Agreed. Don't think she has the athletics to take a slam, but absent injury, when all is said and done I think her career high ranking will be top ten.

OTOH, she's a seventeen-year with basically the entire universe rooting for here, ashe being what it is. Big match win. Now let's see big tournament win. Although ..... I'll take a Fed Cup title.

what a DISGRACE for the WTA tour.
Demented, you should have won the match. A US tour series WINNER at that..:o

Now we can't blame Serena for 'CONCENTRATING' only for the SLAM, and all those retired players rushing back..

Safina was at least better, she clinched the win anyway..

just another thing-Oudin had both more winners and unforced errors than Dementieva. She was the one dictating play, which is surprising. Dementieva is very similar to James Blake in that she's very intelligent off court, but on court she can be quite brainless at times. Way too defensive and she didn't put enough pressure on Oudin's serve

Great win for Oudin and a brutal loss for Dementieva. It's as simple as that.

Melanie is impressive and she's not a flash in the pan. I doubt Oudin will ever be a great tennis player but she should have a very good career and be a top ten player at some point. Maybe she can do even better than that. I hope she can. It's a good sign that Melanie shows so much poise early in her career.

This years U.S Open series proves what a crock of sh*t the whole thing is. Querrey is not winning the Open and now Lena-D isn't either. She really did not have a good strategy out there today. After the injury to Oudin all she had to do was hit the ball short and make Mel move up and back then she would have been in control. :o She really could should have mixed it up more, especially with a girl with a bum leg. Elena just doesn't handle pressure very well does she? Good luck for the rest of the season Lena.

As a big Elena fan, I am really disappointed she lost. However, Oudin was incredibly good today. Her forehand was outstanding, and what really stumped Elena was her movement. Often she out muscles and out runs her opponents. Oudin's movement was great (bogus injury or what!) and her poise was very impressive. So many of the young girls just hit hard and flat and are a bit dull. I like Oudin's game a lot. Yes, with her size and movement she is like a Henin-mirror - forehand outstanding to Henin's backhand.

Someone else said it above about Elena, where was her head??! She is such a good player, moves so well, hits beautifully, but so often when it comes to the crunch, she doesn't seem to be clear headed enough (that match point against Serena at Wimbledon will live long in the memory.) In the final set, she broke back twice only to come out and play shockingly for the first few points on her own serve, putting herself on the back foot.

I was so impressed with her pummelling of Camille Pin. She was aggressive, came forward, looked on top of her game. I really was thinking a run to the final could be on if she could get past Sharapova. However, sadly as a fan, I doubt she can ever win a slam. She did not play badly today - unlike Safina whose form is abject - she came up against someone playing like a dream, with nothing to lose, in front of her home crowd. She showed guts in the first 2 match points, but she'd already failed to take her chances to win by that point. Shame for Elena. As for Oudin, I hope she continues to play well. I was very impressed with her play (didn't see the JJ win at Wimbledon) but how often have we seen someone play out of their skin and beat a big player, only to come down from that high and lose. It'll be interesting to see how far she goes in this tournament and the future.

This is a ridiculous argument. No one, Elena included, was really consistently impressive at the USO series this year. She was a bit better than anyone else. What is her losing a good match to a rising star got to do with Serena not putting half the effort in tour matches to what she does in slams (which even most Serena fans will admit)?
And I'll put the last sentence as "finally there's some chance for a future for American tennis after the WS", and one talented teenager isn't much of a future. Even Canada seems to have more depth at ages 18-20 atm.

What a good post. My thoughts exactly (well maybe minus the Henin part) The Pin match was great, I was like "she can do it here! Only in NY. Then I remembered it's Oudin and Sharapova next. So i got scared of Oudin, cause I saw her def. Jankovic and knew that it's gonna be tough but predicted a score like 7:5 7:6 or blahblah 6:4 in 3rd. That's heartbreaking  especially since half of seeds are gone. Lena had a terrible draw. But I guess it just had to be like that. However Vera Demen. in the crowd drives me nuts. Thanks to Eurosport's bizarre priorities and to ES2 not being available out at these here backwoods, I didn't see a single point of this.

Oudin is a bit underrated because she's tiny and American. But still.

Big disappointment for Dementieva (yeah, I know - understatement of the decade). You could almost feel, throughout the summer, that even the average tournament goers now want poetic justice for Dementieva. Yet you could almost feel that they will never get it.
