I can't stand watching Safina anymore. Unfortunately, the women's tour is so weak that no one is mentally able to close out a match against her :help:

She'll be out soon, I hope?

Barrois probably had the best chance of her career today of upsetting a top player. So sad she couldn't take it. But she made Safina look stupid quite often.

Not like Barrois played any good. Seems like Dinara just played enough to win in the last 2 sets. She deserves to lose the first set.

Who won't Safina struggle with? Every time she wins like this, the tour loses.

But i have to applaud her for keeping her UE count down after the 1st set against SUCH a hopeless player. It's a pity, with this draw she really had the chance to breeze through and show us she's serious about being the best player on tour. But standing 10 miles behind the baseline, serving DFs and just killing herself out there is not nice to watch. Better match than yesterday though!

Kristina :help: Made it so hard to cheer against Safina, although she had some good points and was dangerous in the forecourt. But her backhand is WOEFUL!

OHHHHH Kristina...2*-0 deuce in final set
3-4* 40-15 and not able to convert

hope someone can take this dinara out soon, painful to watch
i think she is the player I start to hate more and more, together with bartoli and stosur

15 Double faults from Safina :help:

Nice play from Kristina, so much variation, finally somebody who is still able to slice the balls, not only bashing them like brainless Safina.

The game at 2-3 final set on Dinara's serve was the one good game from her the entire match. Two aces and two forehand winners. At all other points she looks more like someone in the top 100s than number 1... and I say this as a fan.

Pick it up Dina, still hope to see your QF with JJ. ;)

She was embarrasing Safina at times :hearts:

Congrats Dinara. I have no idea how she manages to escape all those upsets but somehow she does, maybe that's why she's still #1 :worship:

she'll be here till the end of the tournament. Make of that what you wish.

These matches occur for her so often they must be her version of a "routine straight set win"

It was actually a lot better than against Rogowska. Dinara didn't play that bad at all as you are all saying :o She has 36 winners to 38 UEs with 15 DFs (that's the only real mess here) I'll take this win...

Why does Safina get all the useless opponents? :weirdo:

That's what you get for being number 1
Easy draw.

Barrois is plain bad and she managed to take Safina to 3rd set.
She's got no weapon at all combined with poor shot selection.

Dinara won't be able to get away like this with any semi-decent opponent.

Why the hell is Dinara standing SO far back to return serve? I swear to god some of Barrois' serves were coming down again by the time they got to Dinara like a groundstroke would. Even during the rallies, so far back, no pressure on Barrois' serve or that awful awful slice she has. :weirdo:

The serve needs much work, and mentally she's fucked.

I don't know whether I admire her fighting qualities, or am sick of her winning SO UGLY, it's almost not worth it. :o :help:

Either way, just watching her is hard, hard work. Annabel Croft said it right (for once) : "She's too mechanical; it's not pretty."

Judging from the score, almost the same story as the first round. But Olivia was a great player, loved her. I watched a bit of this match and all I saw was Kristina hitting into the net again and again.

Hmmmm, I cannot for the life of me understand why Dinara is so far behind the baseline. Surely if she takes a couple of steps forward she will take the ball earlier and dictate play more? However, I have no idea what to suggest about her serve, other than try watching the ball until you hit it.... Not good tennis but still a win.

So many posters dumping on Dinara! That's just crap. Dinara certainly didn't play her best tennis today but she did find a way to win! That's what the elite players do. Congrats to Dinara - now calm down and play tennis!

So many posters, especially WS fans, dumping on Dinara for being #1. Understand this, except for Wimbledon, Serena's efforts in every tournament she played since the AO stink up the WTA far worse than what Dinara did in the first two rounds of this USO!!! Winning ugly takes a lot of effort, perseverance and dedication. Dinara demonstrates she has those attributes. Serena enters tournaments to avoid fines, for christ's sake, and plays like it ... disappointing the tournament organizers, the WTA, her fans and casual tennis fans. What, 3 or 4 first match tournament exits in a row?!?

But you say, "Serena only cares about the Majors." Then she should only play the majors and pay the fines. But be aware that the four majors don't make a #1 or even make her "deserving" of being #1. There's no doubt she is a talented player, maybe the most talented player in WTA history. However her behavior in non-slams and pressors this year have finally convince me that she does not have the attributes of a Champion, regardless of what she wins. She would make a very pathetic #1

Diabolical match.

Safina is just flailing madly like a drowning woman at the moment.

Barrois has a bit of a throwback game, with some slice, s&v , but the forehand is not a technically very sound looking shot and lord only knew where it was going to land half the time - and then she got in front in the final set and froze, quelle surprise.

I sometimes think the WTA has been infiltrated by people bent on its destruction because I shudder to think what casual sports viewers would have thought on watching that match. No - I do know - they would have thought it was a fucking joke that the 15 double faults woman is ranked #1.

And it's hard to argue.

Barrois' game is not that bad people. She certainly does a lot of nasty things with her game, things different players don't like too much. She is not very consistent though and some shots can look quite bad, yes... Still I like the way she plays and she should get more credit for that. Don't forget she only turned professional about two, three years ago so she is sort of a late boomer with a different background-
