NOTE: Went with Eggy's ranking to figure in all the early round US Open losses.
The top seven are sailing along, doing their thing. Azarenka-Wozniacki for the final YEC spot could be fun for the whole fall. Unless a top seven player gets injured and hands them the spot. I hope they realize they're just keeping that seat warm for Sharapova.
01 Safina .............. 9010
02 Serena .............. 7067
03 Venus ............... 6525
04 Dementieva .......... 6035
05 Kuznetsova .......... 5880
06 Zvonareva ........... 5340
07 Jankovic ............ 5320
.. ..................... ....
08 Azarenka ............ 4592
09 Wozniacki ........... 4550
.. ..................... ....
10 Ivanovic ............ 3155
11 Pennetta ............ 3150
12 Greater Radwanska ... 3000
13 Petrova ............. 2950
14 Stosur .............. 2860
15 Bartoli ............. 2825
16 Razzano ............. 2420
17 Cibulkova ........... 2405
18 Mauresmo ............ 2281
19 Medina Garrigues .... 2030
20 Na Li ............... 2002
21 Hantuchova .......... 1985
22 Zheng ............... 1885
23 Lisicki ............. 1870
24 Schiavone ........... 1835
25 Vesnina ............. 1835
26 Sharapova ........... 1820
27 Cirstea ............. 1766
28 Kanepi .............. 1710
29 Kleybanova .......... 1680
30 Suarez Navarro ...... 1660
31 Wozniak ............. 1575
32 Greater Bondarenko .. 1570
33 Jose Martinez ....... 1520
That's basically ALL the players who were supposed to make the round of sixteen, but have a least a chance to make the QFs.

'Top ten player' is a nice line in resume. In certain circumstance, a five figure contact could become a six figure contract because of those three words.

Now consider a player like Na Li. I believe she's the higest ranked Chinese female player ever (#16 in 2007). This draw is as good as she could hope for. She's ranked ahead of Kirilenko for a reason, Azarenka hasn't shown he Miami for in months, and Venus is injured. A slam semi and d ecent fall, maybe even win Beijing .....

She'd be the head of the Chinese Tennis Federation by 2014.

Caroline is 5th in the race (in front of Venus) and Vika is 7th (1000 points ahead of Vera). I think they will make YEC unless they completely tank.

Yep, and Jelena is #9 in the race behind Vera. :scared:

the YEC player list depends on the race not entry ranking
so the last spot is more likely the battle between Vera Zvonareva and Jelena Jankovic

the YEC player list depends on the race not entry ranking
so the last spot is more likely the battle between Vera Zvonareva and Jelena JankovicI went with the 12-month ranking 'cause the seeds were based on that, but the YTD rankings show much the same.
07 Azarenka ........ 4011
.. ................. ....
08 Zvonareva ....... 3022
09 Jankovic ........ 3011
.. ................. ....
10 Pennetta ........ 2620

14 Razzano ......... 2297
15 Ivanovic ........ 2061
16 Mauresmo ........ 1977
17 Cibulkova ....... 1860
18 Vesnina ......... 1739
19 Hantuchova ...... 1725
20 Sharapova ....... 1720
21 Kleybanova ...... 1606
22 Suarez Navarro .. 1561
23 Li, Na .......... 1553

The last spot in the rankings isn't 'up for grabs' by any means, but it's a ttainable. It's another thousand points to #7. You probably need a good showing, and at Beijing, which was why Na Li's situation intigued me. BUt Sharapova is comin' like a feight train. If she beats Dementieva in the Round-of-32 (two assumptions), Petrova is a walkover.

We'll see how it all tuns out, but some players who were looking at no chance for the YEC have to be thinking they could make it now, if they get lucky.

Azarenka and Wozniacki are safely in the Top 7 in the Race.

The Rankings and Race are two different things. The top 7 in the Race are pretty safe barring two or more players getting very hot outside this group of 7.

The 8th spot is up for grabs.

Race
1 Safina, Dinara RUS 7492 15
2 Williams, Serena USA 6537 15
3 Dementieva, Elena RUS 5325 16
4 Kuznetsova, Svetlana RUS 4493 15
5 Wozniacki, Caroline DEN 4240 20
6 Williams, Venus USA 4036 13
7 Azarenka, Victoria BLR 4011 13
8 Zvonareva, Vera RUS 3022 16
9 Jankovic, Jelena SRB 3011 15
10 Pennetta, Flavia ITA 2620 20
11 Stosur, Samantha AUS 2533 16
12 Bartoli, Marion FRA 2491 19
13 Radwanska, Agnieszka POL 2360 18
14 Razzano, Virginie FRA 2297 18

As for the rankings and this thread, given that all the players lost in the same round, the rankings aren't going to change. In order for Na Li to move up and make real inraods, she'd need to make the SF. Yeah, no.

There won't be that drastic of changes to the rankings.

Is Wozniaki really safe? Is she not mazed out with 20 tournaments already? Would Venus and Azarenka not technically be ahead of her since the still have 4-5 tournaments they can play to make up that small 200 point gap... Anyways with Venus' knee injury she probably wont play after the US Open..... at least if *I* were her i wouldnt....

Maria's not making the YEC... She'd have to win the title to even get close...

does the race not work the same way as the ranking system that you max out on tournament.... Wozniaki's got 20 on her ranking already..... the only way shes adding points at this point is at the Open, or does the race let you play as many as you want? (which would be stupid)

1. Qualification and Attendance
a. Qualified Players - Singles
The Tournament shall consist of a singles draw of eight (8) players
(including one (1) Wild Card, if applicable) in a round robin format
to be determined by the WTA.
The top seven (7) players using the best of 16 ranking system,
starting with the beginning of the Tour Year, shall qualify for the
Sony Ericsson Championships. The qualification method will
count the 51 weeks of events, dropping off the ranking points
earned in the previous Sony Ericsson Championships the week
prior to the current Sony Ericsson Championships.
At its sole discretion and taking into account extraordinary circumstances,
the WTA may select the 8th player for participation in the
singles draw. If the WTA does not exercise its option to select the
8th player, the 8th spot in the draw will be awarded to the player
who is in the 8th position using the method described above.

Thanks for clearing that up. Good that they have now specified the number of tournaments to qualify instead of the indefinite # which some have taken advantage of by playing excessively.
