View Full Version : Czink's display may make it harder for women to get seconds

It was the ideal plot for the WTA to have the second featured Arthus Ashe's night match: an ATP clash featuring GOAT Federer against an unknown journeyman, which would basically guarantee a quick setup for the second match, involving the WTA's arguably most popular and charismatic star. They just forgot to ask her opponent, Melinda Czink, to come and play anything better than terrified and mediocre. The resulting match felt like a let down after Greul left his heart and skills on the court, while Czink moved like a zombie about to have a heart attack. Problem is that, the way Serena played today, maybe only 1 or 2 women on this planet, if any, could make the match competitive, that is why the WTA will keep on struggling to feature matches worthy of closing the night...

Are you kidding? The way Serena played tonight, the only person who could have beaten her was the guy who played before her. ;)

Melinda retired from her last match after just 3 games coming into the US Open. She didn't look comfortable at all. It was probably a good effort for her to win a match here.

That wasn't funny but Stosur losing to King made for a good chuckle

Who has decidedly more popularity or charisma than Serena?

I don't even like her.

Back to the thread topic:
1. It was a 2nd round match and that is what you often get.
2. Nothing is going to make it "harder for women to get seconds". If I understand you correctly to be saying harder to be placed in the late match following the marquee match for the night. This was done in the name of fairness, so the women will continue to be scheduled this way.

ok.

#1 lesson in hating:
don't refute facts, just turn them into negatives

popular: rampant like an infectious disease
charismatic: clown

of course, i personally take them as positive :]

popular: the universally prominent tennis goddess
charismatic: pole-swappingly magnetic

At least everyone can thank you for the laugh this time.
Not even her biggest haters can deny, that ANY player comes even close in the charisma department even Masha & Venus struggle to even play in the same league and I like both more than Serena, but this fact is undeniable.

Serena played really well. No one can do anything when her unforced error count is in single digit and she is serving like that.

Yeah, Clijsters and Bartoli really SHOULD have been the night match, don't understand why it wasn't. Still don't.

The crowd would have been SO involved in that match.

I didn't think Serena played Thaaaat well. Couldnt showcase that much Probably because Czink played shitty but, I think Serena played better in her Wimbledon QF.

I'm Not quite sure when 2nd round matches of top seeds on the men or the women were ever expected to be nailbiters?? I'm so used to seeing Rafa and Raja killing people in these rounds it's nice to see the fems do it too occasionally

ATP don't control what happens in Slams.

Don't know about WTA.

I figured they put Roger and Serena because they knew both would be quite quick and no-one would end up playing into the early hours.
Also there aren't many female players other than Serena that could hold so large a crowd after a men's match. The BBC reported that Serena was playing to record-packed stadium.

This "women going second" won't happen a lot anyway, but I don't think it's Serena's beatdown that is going to affect the schedule.
