View Full Version : Safina needs to embrace the #1 ranking, not fear it.

Let's forget for a second that Dinara hasn't won a slam. She's been the best performing player for the past year, subsequently assuming the #1 ranking (and by quite a margin) and has beaten the best out there. Serena, Venus, Henin, Sharapova, Hingis, Davenport, Jankovic, Dementieva.. she's beaten them all. But it's obvious that this girl feels like she doesn't belong. We saw Mauresmo and Clijsters go to #1 slamless, but they never showed the fear that Dinara has of being a #1 player without a slam.

Just watching the replay of her match against Rogowska, and this became even clearer to me. She's out there, playing against a WC outside the TOP 150, whose main tour maindraw matches you could count on one hand, and she's out there, frustrated, and just a mess emotionally. These sorts of girls should fear her, but they don't. Safina is 6"1, and 150lb of muscle mass, that alone should be enough to intimidate opponents, but it doesn't. She should be showing some confidence, patience and composure in her game, and her title as the worlds #1 player. Right now, she's not cutting an imposing figure out there, and with that there's no way she's winning a slam any time soon.

Dinara is the only player since Henin retired who is holding on to #1.
So she is doing enough to get better week in and week out results than everyone else.
She still has to win a major.
She never got thru a slam QF until after Henin retired, so it's not like she's losing finals at majors for 15 years. More like 15 months

That's just one match. Not too long ago she was killing everyone at the French, barely losing games.

I don't think her problems are to do with being no.1. If anything, she got better when she claimed the no.1 ranking. She seems perfectly settled in the position of being the world's best women's singles player and has handled it far better than Ivanovic, Jankovic, Serena, Sharapova have since Henin retired.

Maybe Safina doesn't feel like she is the best? Inferiority complexes can have an effect on one's game.

She needs some supporting people around her. She is such a mess emotionally, we see her crumbling on the court time and time again.

What people on here won't admit or can't stand to believe is this girl actually has talent. She's got underrated defense, heavy penetrating shots off of both wings, a serve that can be potent if she holds it together and a pretty good return game.

Is she the most talented? Of course not, but she's got game. Right now though, she can't handle the pressure. Everyone is laughing at her, insulting her and let's give credit to her b/c every single match she is out there fighting despite this environment.

I say dump the coach.. get a team that's more supportive and conducive to confidence and positive thinking and find a good psychologist too.

It is a given that the top ranking comes with high expectations especially on the major stages. Most of the world only watch the majors or catch the tennis headlines therefore if you have to put on the performance that matches expectations. She has come to realize that performing under pressure especially at the majors is no cake walk and the pressure is only going to build. The first thing she should work on is stop being so reliant on the coach and focus on the court and figure out in your own head what to do. This will build her own self confidence and self belief. With more self belief she will relax more and play better.

She hasnt had the results lately....she had the results on clay..... but not so much anymore..... and no she doesnt need support around her.... shes already too dependent on her coach as is....

Safinas problem is shes embarrassed, should she be? in some of her matches when she got detroyed by Venus.... yes... I wouldnt say that she should embrass the #1 ranking as much as she needs to stop talking about it.... People talk about Serena laughing at Safina, but Safina never should have made that ridiculous statement that "I won Rome and Madrid....." She should just be like yeah, Im #1. She needs to accept the fact that shes number 1 and shes not the best and shes not gonna be the best... Thats what her problem is..... her dream was to be #1 and be the best and clearly shes not and it drives her even crazier than she already is.

Her performance at Roland Garros was her embracing her position as the #1. A player who should be FEARED! ....until she reached the final. ;)

I'm not talking about the other players, if I wanted to compare I'd make a poll. Just because Ivanovic handled #1 woefully, doesn't mean Safina is excused for handling it a little better. I still don't think she's handling it that well, she doesn't believe it. I'm not going to say she doesn't deserve it, she obviously does, but she needs to believe that.

I'm sure she doesn't. What I'm saying is that she has to start believing it, embracing it. If she does that I can see her winning a slam, she definately has the game and you're lying if you don't believe that.

The thing is, I don't believe the beatdown from Venus would have occured if Dinara had shown the belief in herself as the #1 player. Venus KNEW she would be fragile, timid, and she was picked off with ease.

The part in bold is beyond ridiculous and isn't worthy of a reply.

if dinara feared the number one ranking she would have had a blank clay season and wouldn't have been number one. but she had great resluts and handled her ranking really well. now she's playing like crap because she put too much pressure on herself to win a slam. but she should be aware that she's young and she'll have many other opportunities to win a slam.

Dumping the coach would be the worst thing she could do, though I agree she needs to be less reliant on him. I think the trouble is that she hasn't actually played that well this year. Sure she's won a lot, but besides RG R1-4 & a few matches in LA she's largely got through by fighting hard (meaning she gets beaten down by top players, which doesn't help her confidence). At the moment there is so much pressure on her from herself, the media & other players that it's surprising she hasn't had a mental breakdown.

I agree with the person that said Serena's comments were disgusting though, bullying in it's purest form - especially hypocritical form a player that said she cried after the media called her fat!
