View Full Version : IMO US Open final will be: Serena Williams vs. Maria sharapova

Serena always raises her level at the majors and the only difficult match for her will be against either Clijsters or Venus in the semis which she should win.

Should Sharapova maintain, and possibly raise, the level she demonstrated in her first round match she should be able to defeat the mentally weaker Elena Dementieva (also, the US Open surface is faster than Toronto and Sharapova will be better rested) and after that Sharapova could potentially meet Petrova in round 4 (easy), Kuznetsova in the quarters (Sharapova is once again mentally stronger and Kuznetsova has been in average form lately). In the semis she'll come up against either Jankovic (who usually doesn't fare too well against Sharapova's hard flat strokes) or against Safina (on this surface, and considering their form, Sharapova shouldn't have a problem).

A Serena Williams vs. Maria Sharapova final would be great but against Sharapova Serena usually plays her very best. Serena to win.

Thoughts?

Whoever wins, this would be WTA's saving grace.

It's definitely the most realistic of any ideas. However, Sharapova could come up against someone who defeated the seeds and take some time to get used to her unprecedented opponent, which could cause an upset if she doesn't get used to them, and then Serena could just get bored of winning at some point and eliminate herself.

But, I'd love to see Serena vs. Sharapova, especially if Sharapova won! :D

I'm not so sure about Maria, THIS year, but Serena really should get to the final and pocket the tile too. It would put a much needed end to several debates too (cough, who is the best player etc., cough)!

I know a lot of people hope for it, but i just dont think Maria is back at the level again to be challenging. Then again, the other main challengers are in the bottom half, so if she does beat Lena anything could happen. It hinges on that match imo.

serena might be true, don't see her loosing to anyone in her half

BUT Maria is not the favourite in her half...even IF she beats elena, I wouldn't bet on her

She had good wins during the hardcourt season and then playd a poor match after that

anyway, Dementieva will beat her...maria didn't lost because she was tired

Pova would have to go through Dementieva, Petrova, Kuznetsova, Safina/Jankovic.

I'm not betting on that, even at a slam with a day off in between.

Serena's only (and I mean only) test would come in the SF against Venus, Clijsters, or Azarenka.

Daniela, Samantha, Flavia, Amelie, and Vera are welcome to make me eat my words....

This is like saying Maria will lose in the final  But I'll take it at this point. :)

But nah, we just finished the first round. Still a loooong way to go especially for Maria. Has Elena to worry about.

I can't see Sharapova making it through her draw. Dementieva is the only one i can totally envisage her beating.

I actually think Jankovic has the better shot to make it through the final. Serena won't be deeply troubled until the SF's IMO. I don't even know if Azarenka can make it to the QF's.

Should Sharapova maintain, and possibly raise, the level she demonstrated in her first round match ....Stop. Pironkova is an 22 year old ITF player who's barely in the top hundred. She's lost her last eight main draw matches, in a row, and the two tournaments where she had to qualify, she lost in qualifying both times.

Do you actually think a match against an opponent like that is any indication of Sharapova's form? Now let's look at her summer hardcourt record against top fifteen players.STANFORD ....... R16 PETROVA ....... W 6-1 6-2

STANFORD ....... QTR VENUS ......... L 6-2 6-2

LOS ANGELES ... R32 AZARENKA ...... W 6-7 6-4 6-2

LOS ANGELES ... SMI PENNETTA ...... L 6-2 4-6 6-3

TORONTO ........ R64 PETROVA ....... W 6-3 6-4

TORONTO ........ R16 ZVONAREVA ..... W 6-2 7-6

TORONTO ........ QTR RADWANSKA, A .. W 6-2 7-6

TORONTO ........ FNL DEMENTIEVA .... L 6-4 6-3
I just can't see Sharapova, based on her play since her return, beating Dementieva, Kuznetsova or Safina, let alone all three of them. That's knocking off three top five players just to GET to the final. And you know Dementievia is gonna bring her 'A' game.

Well, I'm sort of abandoning Vee (FWIW, I'm abandoning Roger for this USO, too) but I really want a matchup between Rnd3 (if it happens) TOB/Lena and Rena.

Of course, it's no secret which one I want more. But Lena has a very tough Rnd 2.

TOB looked good. So did Lena. My great fear is that not only will they frag one, the winner may be so nicked up that they're easy prey for Petrova or Sveta.

THIS IS JUST A SUCKASS DRAW FOR LENA. (I may have mentioned that once or twice before).

BTW, I just got the draw for my son's tournament this weekend. Guess what? IT SUCKS, TOO.

And the US plays El Salvador in a huge World Cup qualifier.

I could be in for a long weekend, sportswise.

I miss Lena's bangs.

1. Maria isn't the same player
2. Maria has just come back from injury
3. Sharapova hasn't shown anything close to a form that would be able to contend with Serena in a final since her comeback

I know that, but if and I say if, Maria reaches the final, maybe it will be because she is close to her best, but again wait and see. She needs to beat a lot of top players first.
And odds means nothing with Maria, you should know that, how odds were in Wimbledon final 2004, US open final 2006 or OZ 2008 QF. Actually with Maria, when odds are against her, she is even more dangerous, but again, you already know that.

For some reason I think it Jankovic or Dementieva's year. Tough to say that being a Sharapova fan, but to expect her to get to the Final here even as a fan is an unrealistic expectation.

My Final 8 Looks like this:
Safina v Jankovic
Dementieva v Wozniacki

Serena v Pennetta
Azarenka v Clijsters

Jankovic v Dementieva
Serena v Clijsters (Which if Kim continues to improve on her form could be a HELL of a match!)

Also I think Serena's draw is tougher than some are giving it credit for. Pennetta and Stosur have both been pretty hot recently. Having to go through those 2 back to back is a tall task for any player right now. Don't sleep on Vesnina either. She is my darkhorse pick in the bottom half.

There's an expression in basketball. 'Winning the game in the first quarter'. As in, you beat down your opponent so bad, so early, you break their belief they can even compete. And Serena will have grandchildren before she forgives Sharapova for the 2004 Wimbledon final. If Sharapova does somehow get there vs Serena, it'll be love-and-love.

they forget maria's win in LA and the tight matches in Australia and Charleston.I think we should be forgiven for forgetting the last time Sharapova beat Serena. It was a long time ago. Also, I view it like the double bagel Martina Hingis handed Monica Seles at the 2000 Ericsson. One could view it as a devastating Hingis win, but Seles was so injured, she had no business being on the court. Impressive as may be to you that Sharapova could beat Serena in three sets when Serena couldn't raise her arm over her head to serve, I was more impressed that Serena actually took a set in that match.

You actually make a good point about Charleston though, given that Sharapova was already having shoulder trouble.

Watching the NBA is where I first head it. It referred to a veteran team, and the second night of a back-to-back, playing on the road. If the home team is reasted, sometimes they just trying to run them out of the building, get something like 40-16 at the end of the first quarter, and get the other team to give up.

This Serena YEC LA 2004 hyperbole really needs to end. Serena was injured at the end of the second set and then rattled off 4 straight games playing her absolute best tennis. It took some real grit from Sharapova to shrug that off and get her deserved win.

The comparison to Hingis/Seles is really ignorant. Monica felt a lot of pressure to play that SF even with a sprained ankle that she had before the match.
