EPIC!

OK, I am still bitter about Kateryna "defeating" Vee, but I will take back what I said in the "WWW?" thread... that Kateryna isn't that special and didn't have a chance...

Heavy strapping on Kateryna's left thigh, but didn't affect her play too much (although she walked very tentatively around the court). More winners from her than I was expecting, but she was going for broke. :bounce: Her inside-out backhand was

Ana won 9 of the first 12 games, and Kateryna won 9 of the next 10!

Kateryna: 2
Ivanovic: 0
Mwahahahahahahahahaha

Maybe she should be injured more often..??? Exciting match. Ruined only by Ana's fist-pumping :fiery: But the crowd was more involved than I've heard in a women's match for a while.

First time Ana has lost in the first round of a slam....

Ana is finished. Her career resembles Dokic so much; mind you Ana doesn't have an abusive jackass of a father.

Both rose up the rankings rather quickly, Dokic winning Tier I events and getting to #4 in a much tougher era of tennis, Ivanovic getting a Slam and #1 thanks to Henin leaving the game and nobody left who knows how to play on clay. Both lasted about 3 years then started to lose it and drop in the rankings. Who knows maybe in 6-7 years time we will see a mini resurrection of Ivanovic.

This was an exciting match where the lead kept changing hands.

In set 2 Anna was leading 3-2 an had a chance in game 6 to do some damage. During a rally in game 6 Anna was in control of the rally, but made the mistake of hitting in front of Bondarenko twice during the rally, which ended up with Bonderenko lofted the ball out to the center of the baseline. By the time Anna caught up with the ball and tried to return the ball in the other direction, Anna could only return the ball out of bounds. Bonderenko went on to win the game and the set.

I give Anna credit for coming back down 4-1 in the 3rd set, but in the end she did the ussual choke, just like when she had Zvonereva down 2-0 in both sets back at Indian Wells back in March. Anna needs 2009 to end and start fresh in 2010.

So are you blaming her for using good strategy? I'm confused. If I'm playing someone who can't keep the ball in play I'll take something off of the ball and just act like a backboard until they show me they can keep a point going.

1stly katya is spunky and has world class backhand and movement. her forehand and serve however are stopping her being top 20.

ana is a mess, her emotions are worse than ever and need to be controled. shes snatches at the forehand so much now. she gets herself in such a tizwaz that all her thought processes go out the window. its so odd to see a grand slam champion constantly beaten in the mental stakes by players like bondarenko.

MarieC
Sep 2nd, 2009, 02:15 AM
This is the lowest of the lows for Ana. I don't think she can fall anymore. Its time ti look really long and hard at where she is going with her career. Maybe taking the rest of 2009 off might be for the best cause walking on the court isn't doing her any good right now for her mental state.

And crazy woman in the white needed to be glued to her seat. Its a tennis match not a football game.

I'm not exactly a fan, but she must be respected for her tennis and what she brings to the game when she's playing well. It's really saddening to see her on a downward spiral, trying so hard to fight it, seemingly unable to be able to come up with the right shots at the right time.

And one random observation:

At 6-5 for Ana (Maybe it was the tie-break) they showed her box, and her mother was laughing her ass off. How many times would you see Mommy Vera laughing, let alone smiling at such a point in the match when her daughter is struggling for over two hours on the court? None. That's probably why Lena gets tons of motivation from her mother while Ana seems to get none.

Ana´s career remimds me the career of JC Ferrero

They both always looked like future winners in Roland Garros since the beginning and they got it after years of consistant results there, both with huge forehands at their best (probable the best in the business) and finally we are talking about two former number ones thanks to a same devastating shot in moments of confidence and similar results (RG Champion , RG runner up and GS Finalist in Australia or US Open)

It was 5-3 Anna in the tiebreaker, when Anna went for a winner off of Bonderenko's serve. The ball landed on the left sideline, then Bonderenko quickly evened the tiebreaker at 5 on the next point.

Throughout the match Anna had several chances to step ino some weak rally shots by Bonderenko, but chose to lay back. The plays that I have in mind were points that went to Bonderenko. I give Bonderenko credit, she had a little more fight in her than Anna.

I think Ivanovic needs to find a full-time coach, not that she abandoned Kardon too soon. I reckon he wasn't the right choice but am guessing. I've wondered last couple of months if the Adidas program has something like a glass ceilng. The players have good to great results initially, but they seem to hit a plateau. I don't know, but intitial success seems to be followed by let-downs.

There is so much to analyse about Ana

THis thread just shows how noone has any idea about Ana anymore. Sam Smith said it best at last years YEC when she said that being Ivanovic's coach is the hardest job in women's tennis. Nothing is straight forward. Big potential. At her best a massive forehand and serve. But a mental shortcoming. Inconsistency. Panics.

Ana was fighting herself deep down on court today more than Katarena. Credit to Kata for tactics, strategy and execution, but there was nothing to analyse she just threw in the same moonballs and serves to win - every aspect of the match was completely in Ana's hands. She didn't find the right shots at the right time.

Maybe one day she wll start doing that again, hopefully.

Nice try. Ana always was a far better player than Dokic regardless of the eras they played in. She's a no.1 and GS champ. Say what you want about Henin leaving and the draw being "easy" but she still had to go there and win those semi and final matches against high calibre opponents. Few are able to pull off a Grand Slam victory, and I HIGHLY doubt Jelena would have done it if she were in Ana's position.

And anyway, I think their careers were entirely different, particularly with Jelena having an awful lot to cope with off the court too.

Ana´s career remimds me the career of JC Ferrero

That's a better comparison, both soooooo talented and HUGE forehands. :worship:
The difference is, Juanqui maintained his level after the French win with a series of other spectacular results and eventually claiming the no.1 ranking before it all eventually got too much and burnt out at that point. (but not because he couldn't handle the pressure). Ana really has hardly done anything since her French win even when she's appeared to be physically fine. She's just been a mess most of the time and is getting worse. As a Maria fan, I really appreciate a fighting spirit and players "going down swinging." But when you are spraying and shooting UEs and ball tosses everywhere like Ana was today, you HAVE to make adjustments. Add some topspin, kick the serve etc.

Ana's bad form could be down to:

1) Ana has reached that tennis age where she becomes more self-conscious, at 16-20 its all new and exciting, but the next few years after that become stale and have more expectations and pressure.

2) Ana has reached the age where she wants to live a normal life and not miss out on having relationships or pursue objectives in her career.

3) Ana is not comfortable in the new outfits and won more in skirt and tops rather than tennis dresses. That visor is probably not helping her sight on serving either, she should do a Maria Sharapova and go the way of the bandana.

4) Ana is superstitious, she doesn't like to stand on the white lines, so this means her mind is always elsewhere from where it should be. She needs to start standing on some white lines and taking more risks and chances.

5) Ana is unable to deal with all the attention, the FHM shoots, this was the beginning of her downfall, when she was really really becoming a huge star in tennis and the world.

6) Ana is not chubby Ana anymore, chubby Ana was a better player and this probably gave her a natural weight and power to her groundstrokes/forehand, but now she is probably stressing about fitness and its not helping, Ana needs to be chubby but still mega hot Ana.

7) Ana is bored of tennis? Happy to win one Grand Slam and retire?

8) Ana is involved in less tournaments these days, and has had a lot of byes to the second round, so this means she doesn't have a lot of match practice and sharpness, she needs to compete in more tournaments. Once she plays first round matches again, it will help.

9) Ana is a perfectionist who is trying too hard to win, when it should be simple. It should be 'other lady' hits it to Ana... BAM! Forehand winner down the line, no chance, Ana should really push her arms all the time, really throw force into every shot, brute force and just go for winners.

10) Ana doesn't like fame, feels like she has to always be somewhere, promoting something, always having to be happy bubbly Ana. Ana should just tell everyone to 'f@&k off' and break the ice and then become a mean machine, a bully in the bitching world of tennis.

I've never been a big fan of the Ivanovic game, but I think she is a wonderful and honest girl and tremendously intelligent person, and there are not too many WTA players who I would really say that about (Dementieva is the only other of the Top 30 players who would receive that praise from me).

Ana should do what makes her happy. As long as she does that she'll continue to be a good player, maybe not a multi-Slam winner, but good enough to be near the top.

She should avoid to make the same mistake of ALG, which was to become obsessed with fitness and play at a weight that is not natural for her. We saw what happened there.

Some interesting thoughts..the question then becomes: Certainly Ana must know this too of be aware that her game ain't going anywhere. What's she willing to do about this? Just happy to be a draw-filler or is she willing to work to become a great?

I've never been a big fan of the Ivanovic game, but I think she is a wonderful and honest girl and tremendously intelligent person, and there are not too many WTA players who I would really say that about (Dementieva is the only other of the Top 30 players who would receive that praise from me). .

Never heard of Venus Williams?

She should avoid to make the same mistake of ALG, which was to become obsessed with fitness and play at a weight that is not natural for her. We saw what happened there.

I really don't think Ana's problems are simply down to her losing a few pounds; it's clearly more connected with a mental thing. Are you saying ALG chose to be overweight, even though it's really got her not-very-far?

I hope Ana can sort this out; I think she's really good for the game.

OMG that was terrible from Ana you can really see her has no confidence in her game. She is so hot and miss almost like a club player. I have to admit the most entertaining part of the match was that lady in th white cheering on Katerina :hearts:

Went to see this match 4-1 in the third. The atmosphere was amazing. Easily the best match of the day for me. Kata and Ana were playing really good from that point on and there was lots of drama and the crowd loved it.

Needless to say, this is really bad for Ana. I feel for Ana's fans especially those who took pride in her no-1st-round-loss record. At least they had that. Now, this is a new low. It's really strange how things like this happen. Good luck for the rest of the year Ana. :)

Good job to Bondarenko. Thought Ivanovic had it in the bag after the first set.

Fantastic, edgy theatre. Great match.

Bondarenko is such a sturdy athlete. Often overlooked because her sister in comparison is so nimble and naturally athletic, but lil sis does shift around the court well. Even though Ivanovic did become error-strewn anyway towards the end of the match, it didn't help that Bondarenko was making such fantastic gets.

The crowd were ON this match. Great to see.

I loved that crazy white woman :inlove:

She enjoyed herself, love seeing that! You have to do that when you're watching a match live, you just HAVE to, expiecally when they are so many errors! Pick a side and just LIVE with the point!

:)

I think Ana, like Hantuchova among others, doesn't know how or like to win ugly. I guess that falls under the perfectionist category, but it's like she doesn't even want to win matches if she isn't hitting forehand winner after forehand winner.

Ivanovic is such a spoilt brat, her annoying fist pumps after her opponent misses an easy shot, her silly tantrums and lame handshakes after losing matches.

Pathetic.

Absolutely devastating loss. I was shaking because on the tense during this match. I pretty much gave up at 1-4 but when she got up 5-4 I really didn't think she'd manage to lose. Guess I was terribly wrong.
That record as unbeaten in 1st round of Slams was something that meant a lot to me, actually. Not so much to hold on to anymore. Just memories.

Really hope she can get back somehow. This is going to hurt :tears:
