4 DF's :D
She's definitely improving. Her volleys aren't disgraceful anymore and her serve looked good.

Good job Maria :D.

whooooo!!!!!!! Glimpses of vintage Maria in this match.

4 DFs but some good play all around.

And Mary Carillo loves Bulgaria apparently.

Good win for Maria. :clap2: I`m pretty pleased with how well her serve looked. However i like to see Maria cut down on the unforced errors.

As for the outfit, i think it`s pretty good looking, but nowhere near the great black outfit from when she won the US Open in 2006. Plus i really love the headband, which is her best one to date. :hearts:

Good job by Maria, only one really bad moment when she served at 5-2 and created 4 errors in a row otherwise very convincing effort, a little shaky at first but her serve improved and thus her play improved as well. Nice solid effort, good to see her back playing well!:hearts::worship:

WOW  Sharapova was scary good, so confident, effective, willing to come to net, big even on the second serve. I'm so impressed.

Where did Pironkova's first serve go? She hit several over 100mph in her first two service games.

Sep 2nd, 2009, 12:45 AM
Lots of points on her 2nd serve, very impressive 2nd serves, she will again have fastest (and probably best) 2nd serve on the tour.

Most of the errors in the 3 lost games in the 1st set, so winners/errors count is misleading

best match since she came back. and finally! a match with a positive winners/ue ratio

Sep 2nd, 2009, 12:52 AM
i wouldnt go too overboard on the netplay compliments. she was decent at net, putting away volleys that any player of her stature should easily take care of. but thats better than usual for her!

Sep 2nd, 2009, 12:57 AM
her average second serve speed was 90mph. that is 10 mph faster than both venus and serena, 12 mph faster than safina, 17 mph faster than kuznetsova, and 1 mph slower than azarenka's FIRST serve speed.

3 pages deep and not one of you has yet to mention the most impressive adjustment Maria made tonight?????????? WHAT ABOUT THE BALL TOSS?????????? Clearly it was lower, and gave her much better rhythm on her serve. The ground strokes are there and were scary good tonight. I was extremely impressed with my girl tonight. The UE's don't worry me because Maria was the only player going for winners so those were bound to happen.

I expect Maria to win her 1st 2 matches in 2 sets.
If she wins round 3, she has a real shot at being in the final.
Although I think Sveta is the bottom half fav(she was good today), the Lena/Maria winner has a big chance to be there the final Saturday.

Pironkova is a tallish, strong girl--she needs to work on that powder puff serve!
I've seen her play better, even against Maria--tonight she was crap.

Maria did have some good volleys, didn't she?!

Very good match from Maria, the best since her comeback , she attacked the first and second serve , Pironkova won only 4 points on her second serve, Maria hit some nice winners and wasn't afraid to do the swingvolley again, if she plays like this she will get far.

Second random bump of the day.

All the matches she has choked away and all the bad losses she has suffered this season have clearly taken a huge toll on Pironkova. It was obvious that she isn't enjoying playing tennis right now, and she seemed almost disinterested at times. Her FH, once loopy but reliable, is now leaking errors as a matter of course. She's a good defender for her size, but chasing Sharapova's shots requires some more mobility than Pironkova was able to muster.

Sharapova's level of play during the US Open Series ranged from "top 3 tennis" (on occasion) to "Safarova on a bad day" (far too often). Today she didn't need to play spectacular, so solid-to-quite good was enough. Pironkova's lackadaisical performance gave her plenty of opportunities to unload on the ball, and the serve more or less held; Sharapova makes adjustments to the "pace/spin/placement" equation on a match-by-match basis, and it seemed she was going for decent pace + high 1st serve% rather than trying to win points outright.
