For me I guess it's about seeing something of you in that player.
I like Lindsay Davenport because even though she wasn't the best mover, she used other facets of her game to the best of her ability to get to number one in the world.

I like Patty Schynder because I think my forehand is as loopy as hers.
She gives her all when it comes to the WTA organization and IMO one of the friendliest on tour.

I love Serena's personality.
And I'm still working on that Serena-esque body.

There`s no simple answer to that. I guess all combined (except looks). I do root for all Slovenian players, but I admit that I would root for Dementjeva whenever she plays Slovenian one.
Some players have game that I like (A.Radwanska, Schnyder, Janković, Dementjeva, Hingis, Venus)- but I don`t root for all of them.
I like personality of some players (Dementjeva, Schnyder, Bartoli)
I`m fan of Russian language, music, novels, ... this means I would quite probably root for the Russian in almost any match.
I quite often root for underdogs. I like surprises (as long it`s not against one of my favorites, of course).

Well - my favorites are (except Slovenians who needn`t meet any conditions - it`s enough that we share nationality)
Dementjeva (like her game, her personality, her attitude, I start rooting for her when she was the most underestimated player on Tour, she was able to lose to anyone but also win to anyone. She got a bit of attention she deserves in the last few years - but she is still in shade of some other players)

Šarapova (actually I have no idea why I like her. Surely not because she`s pretty, because in my opinion Lena and many others are much prettier. I don`t like her game, I don`t like her personalitiy ... but I just have to admire her attitude and persistance in every match)

Schnyder (she`s pretty much controversial ... with her bad-mannered husband etc. ... but I find her very intelligent woman, and I like her game)

Zvonareva (I felt so sorry for her always when she used to cry on court ... I guess it`s my instinct to help and protect  And lately I also like her game ...)

Peer (when I saw her match against Serena in AO few years ago I started rooting for her. I just admired her attitude and fighting spirit ...)

Enough for your research?
(Apologizes for my English ... too lazy to check spellings now;))

I chose mine mostly because of their love for the sport. That's why I loathe players with crazy parents - players who were dragged to the court

one match is all it takes, and I am on the bandwagon. a good personality secures them for life (FRANNY!!!). The exception to this is Jankovic, who I thought I'd like forever, but then she stopped smiling so much, and then there was the stop-watch incident. I have since forgiven her, but she's not totally back yet!!

For me it's a combination of things....their game, personality, humour, attitude and other things too.

With my first fav player - Gigi Fernandez - I saw her play in the Wimbledon semi's, had no idea she played doubles...I just liked her humour, personality and her game (I love one handed backhands) After saw her play doubles with Nat Zvereva and it was magic....my first fav!

With Amelie it was different, first saw an article in the newspaper about her in 1998...very nasty article.....so I decided to support her because I wanted her to win and prove this damn article and the journalists wrong. When I saw her play...loved her game (one handed backhand again) and she was cute, nice person...so after Gigi retired..then had my new fav.

With Eleni...first followed her because she was from a different country than the other players and yes I admit.....classed her as a fav after seeing a pic of her :hearts: Just so happened that I liked her game too (accidently another one handed backhand) I also liked her humour, personality and she was fun to watch, especially when she was young...used to be very funny/sarcastic to the linespeople  So...then she became my top player!

With Akgul was different again.....had heard of this player from Uzbekistan but never seen her...so at RG, wanted to see her play (always good to see someone who you have never seen play before) Watched her match....and she played the most incredible tennis...beautiful slice BH, great serve, amazing angles at the net, lots of variety...was very interesting watch and by the end of her match.....knew she was my new favorite!!! :worship: She has two-handed BH (VERY unusual for me to like a player with two-handed BH) she has a good attitude, lovely personality, intelligence and great sense of humour. So that's why she has become my fav above all the other favorites I've ever had :)

i look for a player who is steady mentally, and wins alot, then ignore them and pick another player lol

i loved chaks game and have to say she made an impression on me by coming to the uk to play those to 25k's way back when, thought it was cool she picked the uk.

a blonde ponytail doesn't hurt either (chak, bondarenko, pierce) lol

Elena is just fascinating. Cool name, interesting career, pretty, fun to root for because she CAN score the big win but doesn't always. I like that room for error where she leaves me guessing.

For everyone else it's because I liked just their game (Lindsay, Daniela, Vera, Amelie, Venus, Andre, Pete, etc).

I've also been a fan of Nadia, Tamira, Vika, Caroline, Jelena, Ana, Justine, Nicole over the years. Now I think ew for most of those, dunno why I liked them...

I found a pattern in the players I like.

How flat do they hit?
How big are their serves?
How athletic are they?
How mentally tough are they?

If they have all of the above, chances are, they're on my fave list.

I've wondered about you and Elena, you seem to be a fan. Do you like her game as well? A lot of obsessed straight men people in her subforum go on about her physique...one poster even makes dirty remarks about her in her pictures thread all the time. I underestimate, as a gay man and Elena fan, just how much dedication she puts into her body.

EDIT: How sad is it that I can go into a thread, any given one, and whether or not it has anything to do with Elena or hair, something about her bangs pops up, and sometimes not even from a fan. Miffedmax has created a monster.

Marion is my fav because she isn't afraid to be different despite what others said. the entire french federation wanted her to change her game, but marion stuck with it and has had great successes.

Marion is my fav because she can prove all her haters wrong. She isn't afraid to tell the truth and treat people exactly the way they deserve. Her quirkiness and individuality drew me too her the first time i saw her, she will always be my favourite player, despite what anyone else thinks of her.

I like baseline players , solid on both sides (Forehand and BH) , at least one important weapon , great serve returns, fighting spirit and good speed or a decent one, this means not a liability (I don´t like slow players)

I'm kind of weird. As someone who's obsessed with sports, who's played on teams, I have a "team" mentality in regard to sports. Serena's my "team" and everyone is a distant second. Every other top player is a threat to her and her mission to win slams, so I really can't root for someone based on play, because in reality, I really, really, wish they would play badly (sorry it's true). I do appreciate the skill involved in Elena's game though, and when she's in form, like she was at Wimbledon, I think she's the second most complete player on tour. The same is true for most of the top players, even Henin, whom I dislike almost as much as The Red Sox or Lebron James (until he gets traded to NY, in which case he's cool).

Dementieva, Schnyder, Pennetta, Dulko, Vesnina - Probably 5 of the nicest/sweetest on tour.

Safarova - I absolutely love her game when its on. Very unique and very different

Chakvetadze, Ivanovic - I feel for the former top players that are slumping.

Dokic - Jelenas backround is horrible and I feel for her as well

Daniela - Never lived to potential but I still support

For me, I suddenly find myself liking a player. I don't decide that I like someone.
The reasons are very much in personality, like interviews and mannerisms. Looks is a factor but not too much. And game is big, I like passion and aggression, fist-pumping and such. But I also like the sweet, innocent like Caroline.
Maria Sharapova- Loved her since Wimbledon 2004, I was only 10, but I just fell in love...can't really explain it
Caroline Wozniacki-Her charm, her sweetness, meeting her briefly at the Pilot Pen where she won, she just is so adorable
Victoria Azarenka-The bratty side of her entertains me, and I like grunting, basically
