Christina! :rocker2:

Big moment in her career, the first Slam win. Nice to see her using her wild card to great effect. Polona was really horrible the entire match though, some of those forehand misses late in the second set were hilarious. It's sad that someone with such a beautiful, varied game doesn't trust herself on any surface other than clay. She has to work on improving her game on other surfaces or she will turn into another Cornet.

Awesome, Christina! I knew you could do it!!!

I've thought for over a year she had the most potential of all the young Americans. I hope she can step to that..

Get another win!! :bounce:

A lot of dazzling winner from McHale and a lot of puzzling errors from Hercog.

I'm glad the young Americans have made some noise. Too bad McHale and Oudin play 2 of the top 5 contenders in the next round.

McHale might get a night match in front of a local crowd!

Somebody remind me where I saw McHale before.... I remember actually watching her online. And it was over 6 months ago but maybe not more than a year ago. It was exciting or close match. Was this AO and if so remind me what happened there.

Yes it was AO 2009 1st Round match (and I believe Mchale had to go through qualies??...) But she played in a close 3 setter against crowd favorite Jessica Moore and lost. After it was over Pam Shriver because shes a crazy woman chased her off the court for an interview when all Mchale wanted to do was cry and she was but Pam kept going.

Polona is still without win on hardcourts in second part of season. :(
Really don't know what to say but that was so big opportunity for R2 and match against Sharapova on one of big court but she lost against no. 381 on the world. I know Mchale is tallented player but Polona is too and she didn't take a chance.

No her and Jessica Moore both got a WC to that event. It's the deal that the USTA has with the Australian Tennis Federation that they swap WC's for young juniors to get a shot at another GS MD. McHale for Australian Open and Rogowska for US Open.

But anyways, I'm really surprised many of these other posters haven't heard of McHale before. She got a lot of exposure in Australia and is a very promising junior. I still like Sloane Stephens better and thought she should've gotten a MD WC here

Nice to see you win a GSMD match after your tough defeat in Australia! :yeah:

Enjoy the experience of playing a top player like Maria in the next round.

Don't think it's a surface (her game is very much suited for hardcourts or grass) ... she hit the wall again, like last year when she lost SF in the Zagreb challanger; don't think she won two consecutive matches afterwards! Don't think she will win many matches till the end of the year.

Fine opportunity gone fishing; 100 points, that's worth almost like a final in 100K challanger  and a change to play against Sharapova!

I do think it's the surface though. I haven't watched her outside clay, but her backhand is really weak and I suppose her slice loses all of it's effectiveness on hard (while on clay and grass it should be a good weapon ;)).

Even total claycourters could win matches on hardcourts/grass and vice versa; i heard some of her interviews and apparently she puts too much pressure on herself therefore uptight going in the match!

Yeah if she said that it means that doesn't feel free on hard like she does on clay cause she's easily top 50 on clay now if not higher. :)

And the match seems pretty close, most of the games went to deuce and Polona lost a couple from 40-0 i believe. Let's see how McHale does against Maria and then judge Polona's performance. ;)

No surprise. Impressed when I saw Christina in Australia.
Clocks the ball well off both sides, it was only her conditioning that let her down in AO by the barest margins, 9-7 in the 3rd.

She cramped up mid way through the 3rd set and the set went to 9-7. She was distraught in tears and had to see the trainer ASAP after the match so she was rushed really.
