Really strong performance and she only really lost games by experimenting with her volleys and her serve - I'm impressed cause she looks like she's here to play for the title and not just make up the numbers.

Finally Lena goes to the net! Thats been my complaint about her game for the longest time. Played so well today its just a shame she may have to face Maria in round 3 but I really want to see a Serena/Elena final.

Nice easy win and fear not there was no screaming today, it was just the classic WONK. ;)

She looked good, very calm and focused and nice net play! Should be a good match next up against Oudin.

There's only so much Pin I can watch with that stupid serve

She came to net even more than this against Schnyder in their Charleston '05 SF. She came to net a lot in that tournament's final too, especially in the first set where she played amazing.

Then she had the two epic wins over Mauresmo and Capriati at this tournament five years ago where she came to net like 80 times both matches combined. Elena even served and volleyed a full game against Mauresmo.

Last year at USO against Patty she came to net a lot. This year against Cibulkova at AO, even against CSN...so many drive volley winners. She rushed net a lot against Jelena in Cincy too, had fabulous net play first set against Jelena in Moscow last year as well. She has the ability to work well at net, but almost exclusively against players who can't hit harder than her.

I love seeing Elena at net, so this match was a nice treat to watch, though I only saw the second set. Wonderful hitting, good precision, tactics, serving, volleying. She won't come to net 23 times against a top player, that's for sure, but I'm glad to see her experimenting. Her footwork, speed, and focus are looking SO sharp.

51 wins, keep it going.

Very nice and quick win! :) She must have worked with coach on net game.
But it's Oudin next... :scared: this can be difficult.

Camille  our commentator said that when Camille qualfied here she was crying, because her mum is very sick so she isn't that much focused on game, but named her wins here as a present for mother. Can anyone confirm that? :awww:

Last easy match for Lena this tournament.

Have I mentioned how badly her draw sucks?

At one end of the scale is this draw. At the other, her bangs.

Well just like it is for Amélie sometimes it can be a good thing because it won't allow Elena to look further ahead in the draw and really take just 1 match at a time.

Chances are Lena is getting Ashe floodlights against Oudin on Thursday.

I wouldn't bet on it as Sharapova plays the local American McHale.

Anyway, awesome stuff from Lena! SHe's really got a shot at this title.

Too bad she and Pova (2 of the 3 or 4 most impressive players) should play R3.

I don't know who will get Thursday night.
The Lena match figures to be more competitive.
But Mary Joe Fernandez is probably in those ESPN meetings, and her husband is an IMG agent. So she wants Maria at night.

The networks sadly, don't always care about the competitiveness of an early round match. They could go either Pova/Dementieva vs a young American. It's win/win. I just think Pova's a better pick for prime time television.

If anything, Elena fans should prefer the day match. Elena could be nervous facing a potentially one sided night crowd and a game opponent.

I'd rather have Lena in the afternoon. The Saturday match will be in the afternoon.
In 2007 Maria played 2 night matches, gave up only 2 games. Players are psyched out by Ashe at night.
Then Maria played a day match and lost 3rd round.
It's better for Lena if Maria has an easy night match, then she gets her Saturday at 11 AM

But it doesn't matter if the crowd's for Oudin. Lena's played those matches plenty of times.

But she lost her way in last few months, from New Haven on she looks like she is geting her form back, qualifying here only helps her on this move up.
