That was PAH-THETIC!!!! Against #167!! But, with all of that said....Dinara battled through horrible play and won...and she's done this before so you have to give her some kind of credit. Still absolutely shitty though and someone will put her AND US out of OUR misery soon enough!!!

Rogowska!! You blew it at 3-0 up 40-15 on Safina's serve!! In the end you just hit ridiculous errors and didn't do much of anything in the last 4 games up 4-2.

This was 10 times worse than Venus' match last night...and thats saying something.

As much as I didn't want Dinara to lose and become the laughing stock of the WTA, I can only criticise her opponent. Ranking and experience aside, Olivia has no pressure whatsoever, and as a tennis player should have closed this out, and not sprayed a ridiculous amount of errors. I know many will praise her for pushing the number 1, but in my eyes this result for her has no positives. She might never come that close again to such a victory. Well done for Dinara to simply hanging on, well done to Olivia for making it seem possible she could upset, but overall, she could be ashamed.
I think she is more likely to dip, than gain any confidence over this result.

Dinara needs to fire this coach. He helped her move up to the top, but now he is just giving her a negative view of her own abilities. She needs someone much more supportive AND she needs to be less dependent on pleasing her coach. The coach is working for her: she is not working for the coach. I've grown to hate Zjelko Krajan. I knew she'd survive this match, what with Rogowksa's inexperience, but this was ugly. Venus' struggle last night was a much more interesting struggle. The crowd was so looking for an upset today. Come on, Dinara! Wake up and fire that guy!

Though I wish someone would put her out of her misery and take that number 1 ranking off her hands. Unfortunately nobody seems to want to step up.

Looking forward to seeing what Rogowska can do at the AO in January - hopefully she'll get a kinder draw. :)

Yet that's why she's #1, she's consistent at..? The argument that you have to play consistently to be #1 is no longer a valid point anymore, what does consistency have to do with anything when you don't have the mental strength or the grit to win the big matches?

Happy for Olivia's effort. Considering where she come from at the start of the year, this scoreline seemed near impossible. :)

Dinara, ironically, dragged Olivia down to her shitty level with her erratic play. Olivia usually plays much cleaner matches, I would usually describe her as a consistent aggressive base liner. Unfortunately she couldn't get any rhythm out there :(.

Even when she hits the ball out or dumps it into the net, her strokes are amazing :hearts: So clean.

And people, stop saying stuff about Olivia, look she's played 4 matches on the main tour before today and not even much more on the ITF circuit, she's just so inexperienced and even though I got my hopes up, even though I prayed and vibed and screamed come on, the result was inevitable. Not a fan of Serena, but for the record her excessive fist pumps annoy me too. Venus does not fist pump after every point, especially after her opponents hits an error, unlike Safina who does it every time almost. :o

And speaking of the coach... I mean you are number 1 in the world and you have to look at your coach after every point. And not in a JuJu or Maria way, I mean literally searching for what you should do. BEGGING in some cases for your coach to break the rules. Damn shame.

Justine used to do the begging to her coach too, except she won more often. She was coached from the stands.

If Serena or Venus hardly come through their early round matches, they`re just smartly lifting their level.
If any Eastern European woman has a bad 1st round match it`s awful, shame, horrible ...
If Serena or Venus win their early round matches with bagels and stickbreads - it`s their perfect game.
When Safina does it - It`s bad level of players who were beaten.

Just think of it. And as someone already said: stop watching tennis if you think it sucks. Do something else rather.

Rogowska has got quite a lot new fans today. Me included.

I am well aware that Carlos coached Justine. Well...aware.... But it just never seemed as urgent as when Safina does/has it. No quick looks back, straight up staring and the time--after points and during changeovers. I fully expect her to look up at her coach one day, not recognize what he's saying and go, "huh? SAVE IT!!! If Serena played this way as the #1 player you same people crying for the violins where Safina is concerned would be ragging about Serena being the worst WTA #1 in history so SHUT IT UP....ZIP IT...AND THROW IT AWAY!!! Being #1 also means taking the criticism when you put in shitty displays as was shown today and fail to win majors. Its a double edged sword. With the pride of being #1 comes the ragging when you play the way Safina did today. Can't have it both ways. :wavey:

I accept that she's number one. I never said I didn't. I said she's not THE BEST...which...SHE ISN'T! But she did what she needed to do to get to #1. But when you fail to deliver on the biggest stages of the sport, you're gonna hear it. So she will have to suck it up and continue to deal with the laughing and mocking and criticism at her failing at tennis' biggest stages. You think Tiger Woods wouldn't be laughed off if he won outside the majors but choked like a dying dog in the majors? Ummm no. Its what happens when you are listed as the #1 player and put in performances like this. If she can't handle it at the majors too bad. Thats what separates #1's from MAJOR CHAMPIONS!!!!

This from such and inexperienced player should be tapped into. They get to a ball and manage to hit it, but because they're a little late getting to it, they can't hit it properly: result: unforced error. In men's tennis, there wouldn't have been that last shot. The point would have ended on the previous shot. It doesn't make it more exciting, IMO.
A UE is not always a bad thing. When a very long rally with both players being shown all sides of the court and eventually one player hits the ball in the net, because she's tired, is that a bad point?

I thought this was a thrilling match, actually. I expected Olivia to crumble after losing the second set. She didn't. I expected she'd crumble after Safina broke back, but no, Olivia broke again. I like excitement, I like fighters, I like it when players manage to come back after being on the brink of losing. If I want to see perfect shots, I may as well watch a computer.

i think he's the main reason where ll this bad tennis is coming from. i compare it to when i used to play hockey goalie and certain relative everytime i might have let in a bad goal would shake their head or roll their eyes, it just does nothing to make you feel better about how your'e playing. dinara is stuck with looking at him so much because it has become routine for her. she needs to change it up quickly, i honestly feel sorry for her. you can see the amount of pressure she has right on her face.

Thats not an unforced error. An unforced error is when a player is under no pressure from the speed, spin or position of the ball, Safina hit a load of those textbook shots out.

Yes, it was a thrilling match, but that was meant to be the world's best player out there, and it was.:rolls::haha::spit::help:

Too harsh there. This is only Olivia's 3rd main draw appearance (all due to TA's wildcards). And she comes to this forum!!! OF COURSE she will come close to such a victory again... she's got great potential. And next time, she will take it.

She will surely be disappointed but this is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. GO Olivia!

Well they say the sign of a #1 and a champion in any sport is to be able to pull through and win ugly when their 'A' game deserts them. That sort of thing count just as much if not more than the times when they are playing lights out.

Remember at RG. She played lights out and hardly dropped a game to get to the final. Didn't mean a thing though when she folded to Sveta in the final.

Rogowska handled pace down the middle very well.
That's the way Dinara likes to set up points, and instead Rogowska was hitting aggressive shots.
This was an entertaining match. I've read the ATP locker room was staring at the tv in the 3rd set

Once again, like i've said in the other threads and right after the first 5 games. Rogowska has SERIOUS GAME. That girl was so impressive, how she took that first set. :D It still amazes me...

She was going for her shots with very nice power, she's pretty all-round, she can counterpunch like no other(hitting the ball so so so CLEAN:)), She's an ok mover(needs a little work on it), and also has a decent serve(which of course needs more work too). Besides this, she's doing SPLITS, and actually had a SOLID gameplan. She knew exactly what she wanted to do and did things right tactically, and she also had the mentality to come back from 0-2 down, 3-5 down, 2-4 in the tiebreak and actually took that set mostly because of her own strength. Not to mention she's doing this in like, her THIRD maindraw.
To top it off, she has nice looks and a very friendly/calm attitude.

She made me a BIG BIG BIG fan after just 1 match. I'm REALLY impressed. I'm gonna follow this girl for sure, i think this might be the player i've been waiting for after justine and elena. :D

This girl has a very very bright future if she plays like this and improves on it. After the first 5 games i was like: oewh this girl has potential, she could be top30. After that it got better and better, i see top10 in her if she keeps showing that fearless but stable attitude.

JUST AWESOME! This girl made my day :bounce: :D :worship: :)

 Olivia! But she was fantastic, such a fighter. I didnt even imagine this sort of scoreline

She has a great game, just too many errors and a dodgy serve atm. But she's 18 and I fully believe both these areas in her game will improve. I think she was going for too much at times today, but this experience will help her. She has NOTHING to be ashamed of today, she should be so proud of herself.

Even though she gained alot of fans today, Im very glad she doesnt come on here now and read this stuff. Some people are being too harsh on Olivia, like anyone expected her to even come close before the match, and now shes copping it for losing to the top seed. Seriously she's never been in the position like this before, her freakin 4th or whatever main tour match. It is a pity she didnt get the break for 4-0, and then at 4-4, I had a feeling the pressure would be too much for her. I mean it I thought she would completely lose it after losing the second set, but to her credit she didnt give up. She'll learn alot from this.

Olivia hold your head up high. I was a supporter before this, but never got to see her play and now im a MASSIVE supporter of this girl, she's such a trooper, has a great attitude, and the potentional to have a great game with some of the shots I saw in this match. Just a few things to work on and she has plenty of time to do so :):)
PLus she looked so damn cute :p

Now someone please beat Safina, sometimes she looks so depressed on court and like she's lost, someone show her the way out ppleeeassee :fiery:

Sorry I don't know you, but either you think too highly of yourself, or you seriously have talent and should go pick up a tennis racquet and start training. But if you're a male, then I'm not sure what's in your head to make you think such a statement is going to make you look intelligent.

Just from retrieving every single ball I could produce produce errors to take a set.

And tennis skills aside, I'm faster than anyone in the WTA top ten at the moment. I'd be like a pusher on a cocktail of steroids and speed.

sorry but this is silly. You think that just because people on this forum who can't play tennis better than Safina simply because they haven't been playing the sport since they were 4 shouldn't be alloywed to have a negative opinion on the state of her game? It's like saying people shouldn't have opinions on Bush's presidency because they probably couldn't get as many popular votes.
This is a pro sport and when Safina started training and signed up to play in these tournys she put herself out there to be criticised, complimented or complained about by everyone especially those of us forced to watch the so called entertainment she puts on. That's sport. You can't censor the fans just because you disagree. So stop with your patronising one line attempts at babying Safina and other players.
