View Full Version : NOT a bombshell!!! Apparently, Myskina considers a comeback

AnnaK_4ever
Sep 1st, 2009, 12:58 PM
from her interview with Russian Eurosport:

I know, a lot of players are on comeback trail now - Henin, Clijsters, Pierce. As for me it's hard to predict anything but the first steps have been made : I'm working out at the gym again and I've asked my coach in Germany to send me several rackets. Maybe I should really try [to come back] but when I think about how exhausting it's gonna be my enthusiasm disappears...
Anyway, time will tell...

Get rid of the Serbs, Henin, Pierce, Wozniacki and give me Myskina, PLEASE.

There's no other player that could feasibly come back that I'd like to see give it another go. She won't, but if she did, it'd be another pulling card for me to watch WTA instead of just Dementieva.

People forget, these players are not all that young any longer.

Myskina is 28, Justine will be 28. By the time they've trained hard for 6-7 months, then taken a while to find their form, they'll be pushing 30.

Now, that's not that old if you REALLY want to; if you were forced out of the game and never lost your desire. But if you quit because you were bored or out of motivation, to want to go through all that again when you know that you may be past your physical peak will usually be too much to ask. Myskina and Henin both chose their exits.

Why does anybody not like this woman? As a personality, she is interesting, dramatic, and is a great character. As a player, her game was the antithesis of the cookiecutter power baseline game, and she could create some wicked angles and spins with her shots. She might not be top 5 quality again, but man, would she bring a breath of fresh air back into women's tennis.

Myskina was out with a foot injury she aggravated at Stockholm in 2006. Back then she was #11 in the rankings. She tried to play through injury and lost in the first round at Canada, New Haven and USO that year. The following season she tried to come back but could barely move and lost 61 60 to Shaughnessy at Roland Garros. Then she got pregnant.
It's not like she decided to quit.

Woo... how I'd love a return by Nastya... that would make up for every shitty, miserable Chakvetadze horrorshow I've sat through for the past 18 months (even though I'd replace doing this for one player with doing it for two...) Joyjoyjoy!

On a serious note, I doubt this will happen... I can't see her shoulder and foot holding up to full time tour action again, but the thought is lovely.

Myskina's game would be a welcome re-addition to the tour... she could be sloppy and lazy on court sometimes, but when her head and game were on, her baseline coverage and counter-punching were amazing.

Well, I never say a woman is solely responsible for pregnancy, but one would like to think that she chose it...:tape:

Myskina quit because she'd had enough, then got up the duff.

Injuries are part of tennis. If you can't be motivated to face them and do what it takes to come back, then you've conceded that you'd prefer not to play.

It'd be wonderful to have a FIT Myskina back. If she wasn't, it would be unworthy of tour level success.

She was one of the tour's GREAT characters. Also one of the purest aggressive-counter punchers the tour has seen.

Davenport and Capriati were no spring chickens.

With respect, Lindsay Davenport was considerably higher calibre than Myskina. No disrespect to Myskina, who was a great athlete, and better than Crankovic is today.

Capriati was 20 when she came back, or 22 full-time.

She was too young to retire anyway, but I do think she just had a couple of good (and sometimes lucky) years. I'm not sure she'd get back to top five or even top ten, but she could make a decent living. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing her again.

Maria - injury. She was always going to return.
Kim - pregnancy. She doesn't really have another career to fall back on.
Justine/Myskina = Pure rumours.

If 4 comebacks make you have a fit, I suggest you get yourself tested.

I'd love it but I can't see it. I bumped into her at Wimbledon a few years ago. She was with her trainer. She was extremely pretty with the most incredible skin I have ever seen - it was flawless, without a scrap of make up. She gave us a beautiful smile and she seemed to have real personality. She had a figure to die for as well. She was much prettier than on TV or in photos - which is quite unusual.

There's the foot question and then there's the do I want to question and there's the do the WTA rules allow me to come back successfully issue . If she watches Kim she may get some answers. If Kim does well it will confirm the big hole where the top 5 should be and if Kim starts playing almost as little as a Williams sister the boredom of the tour issue declines.

Gamewise, with two feet, Nastya's crown and a top ranking looks ready for the retaking. None of the youngsters are going far and the ones who made it to number 1 since 2004 are in real trouble heading downwards. Sharapova has a shoulder/service problem that weakens one of her biggest strengths, Sveta is as inconsistent as she has been since 2004. Elena's ground strokes are not quite as penetrating and Dinara can't take a really big title when she's not playing someone who can out think her. Kim and Justine would be in the same boat as Nastya, Momo has jumped ship. Thats everyone apart from the Williams sisters and Vera who was in the competition in 2004 in the same boat , mentally suspect or playing worse.
