The match wasn't that bad. Dushevina should've clearly won this match, but she let the nerves sneak in there. Venus wasn't herself, but lets give credit where credit is due. Dushevina came to play and she pushed Ms. Williams. If she had any kind of forehand she would be a player to reckon with on a consistent basis.

I enjoyed it.

Dushevina played so well. Her backhand was great, when she came to the net she was solid, she also changes the direction of the ball really, really well. This was enough until 7-6 5-4 and then Venus turned it ON. Dushevina didn't choke. Venus was barely missing out there until 7-6 5-7 0-4 and then things mellowed out a bit but Venus had too big a lead. Venus should have made things easier for herself and went to the forehand a lot more.

Vera D  Should be very proud.

Venus :yeah: Hope the knee is okay.

That was truly awful. Other than that 7 game streak from the end of the 2nd set to the middle of the third, Venus was deplorable. Losing a set to Vera D (and coming a game from elimination) at your most consistent Slam is a new low.

Venus always looks so rushed. She doesn't take the ball early enough, and consequently is always pushed back by the most innocuous of shots.

Venus  I like when she has these type of matches occasionally. She has the fighter mentality, maybe not quite as fierce as Serena, but it's there. She knew the occassion and new what she had to do to turn it around. More controlled agression, definitely had some nice tactics. If she didn't have as good as serve as she does, I'm not sure she would have made it out alive. One thing that baffled me is why didnt she find the Dushevina FH!?:confused: The difference between the Dushevina forehand and backhand is like the difference between Venus at Roland Garros and Venus at Wimbledon. And when did Venus get the Rena stare down?

That's the god honest truth. She played better than Venus for 70% of that match anyone should admit to that, but at the same time Venus is a fighter... which is the difference between the top players and the not to players. I'm giving credit to both sides of the net. Let's not be an asshole OK?

Venus played a bad set and a half. She picked it up considerably when it was 5 all.

I don't know what the rest of you were watching. Maybe you were watching Family Guy or something.

BTW, we will know how bad the knee if she and Serena pull out of doubles. If they do, then that is a bad sign. If not (like I suspect they won't), then it isn't as bad as it seems.

You got to hand it to Douchediva, the girl has BALLS. Standing plop on the baseline for the fastest first serve in womens' tennis? And it was so effective, her reflexes were GREAT. And her backhand is good too (her FH is still the fugliest shot ever, though).

As for Venus, the knee was clearly bothering her, and so she couldn't move properly and all those footfaults :help: but you know she's a champion and she fought and dug deep and as she started to play better and the adrenaline got going, she forgot about it and from like 4-5 to 4-0 she was literally unplayable. But she just needs to rest up that knee majorly because its been f'ed up since wimbledon which isn't good. :( GO Penus!

i agree.
I don't understand Venus game plan out there. Vera's forehand is a hot mess. And on top of that she moves very poorly to that side and half the time when she hits a forehand it lands like a foot inside the service line. Unless the injury is a brain injury I don't understand her tactics at all.

Good for Venus to win but her prospects at the USO look bad at best. Reminds me of her play a RG.

it was a very enjoyable match!!!...
the first set was bad...
then turned good...
then footfault turned bad...

4-5 2nd to 4-0 3rdset was Venus best serving in a while...
especially 6-5 2nd set... it was like 2-3 aces/service winners

i kinda gave up on her when she lost the first set tiebreaker...
but...somehow i managed to watch it...
and wow... she fought real hard out there, she didnt give up...

guess what...
she actually had tactics out there!!

I think it's more prevention, but at times you could notice that she spared her knee by putting more weight on the other leg (when she stops running, she pushed more weight on her good knee than her bad knee).

It was a chaos of a match, but VERY entertaining. Venus had a chance to win in straight sets. Vera had a chance to win straight sets. The quality of the third set was high. That match was like a summer blockbuster, acton adventure film. Maybe the writing wasn't the best, but the chase scenes were great, the stars were hot, and the last hour was VERY entetaining. Helluva lot better than 'Transformers' or the last 'Terminator' movie. Even better than 'Doomsday', except that Rhona Mitra is so fucking hot they had to design special cameras to film that movie.

To be positive, I actually didn't think she played that badly tonight. Yes, yes, it wasn't perfect by any means (way too many errors). However, I'm giving Dushevina the credit for many of those errors. Her returning of serve was outstanding I thought and she didn't give Venus many short balls at points during the match that forced some of those errors. Of course, everyone expects so much more out of the top players and for good reasons. However, some nights you just don't quite have it, and when you can still come through and win the match, any sort of way, that is a positive thing not negative! It's all about the wins isn't it? Just my take.

I lost count how many times I watch a Venus match and start yelling "you suck Venus!" and then, invariably, she comes back and wins the match.

Good fight Venus. Even though you made it harder than it should've been.

Hopefully this got the butterflies out of her stomach.

What was Mary Carillo going on about how they shouldn't schedule a women's match at night before the men's? Nice way to show respect for Venus! She assumed that people turned up to watch Roddick and had to wait for Venus' match to be over. How does she know they weren't there to watch Venus? Then she said Venus' match was of poor quality(giving zero credit to Dushevina), and that there won't be many left to watch the "high quality" Roddick match later on(which she assumed would be), which ended up in lopsided straight sets 61 64 62. Definitely some of her more idiotic comments!

I'm glad Pam Shriver pointed out that the Hewitt/whatshisname match at the AO lasted til' 4am and people still stayed, that if it's high quality people will stay, which was totally true. Shuddup Mary!

I hear the advice from her coaches and commentators. They talk about attacking the weakness of her opponent. The thing about Venus is she like to attack the opponent's strength. She figure if she breaks that down, the match is hers. I agree with that strategy but she to postion herself to dictate her own tempo instead of reacting to the players shots and serve. Its like what Bill Russell said about his blocked shots "the best ones are the ones you don't make but instill the fear that you can block it on every play."

Probably the best match of the day :yeah:

Some great rally, so many shitters from Vee to discuss, she was a MESS out there to sum it up - but glad she could hold off Spirited Vera who looked better than her for most of the match!

I really don't know what to expect now for the rest of the fortnight! But hope she can rest that knee and play herself into the tournament, glad she is WINNING these matches early on, her last duds in finals have been because she didn't get enough of this. But not QUITE this dramatic next time Venus :help:

The match was so good, and Venus so frustrating no attention is being given to that dress :tape:

Match of the day for me, for sure.

Granted I only saw Hantuchova-Shaughnessy, Dokic-Flipkens and this one. But of those, match of the day. :D

That's the god honest truth. She played better than Venus for 70% of that match anyone should admit to that, but at the same time Venus is a fighter... which is the difference between the top players and the not to players. I'm giving credit to both sides of the net. Let's not be an asshole OK?

let's say dushevina played great and played more consitently ;), because it was venus who made the more spectacular winners out there. she just made over 50 errors too, which was the bad thing about her game.
both women moved very well and i think except for the wild and ridiculous errors venus made, it was great quality :yeah:

I think Vera D lost the plot for the first few games of the third aswell. The consistency in her groundstrokes wasn't there like it was first two sets. But, part of that was from losing the second, and part from Venus turning it up a notch. She regrouped soon enough, though.

They're called unforced errors for a reason.

this forced- unforced error-decisions aren't a really reliable thing anyways. sometimes you can't really decide if it was forced or not. if you play like venus does, with so much risk and aggression in your shots and someone is bringing everything back with good lenght or places the returns well, it's only logical that you make an error at some point  maybe you can say then that she should change the pace to avoid them, but often that's just not her mentality.
i think such errors after long rallies aren't as bad as some people say they are.

 You're sucha band Venus fan.
congrats to Venus. I'm glad she won since the crowd really wasn't behind her* per usual.

She was injured. And Dushevina played really well. I still can't get around the way she was returning Venus' serve, not even SERENA can stand on the baseline to return Venus' first serve, her reflexes were so quick and she got so many back it was amazing. But Venus is more than amazing and she managed to fight through, I just hope the knee is ok.

she doesn't like to talk about her injuries, usually we get the news from Richard because Venus does not talk about them and when a reporter brings it up she brushes it aside like as if it's nothing. I guess that she doesn't want to show vulnerability , after all this is a tournament and lots of players/coaches are scouting around.

i think i've never seen Dushevina play as good as she did yesterday , granted i didn't see alot of her matches but i was wow at her yesterday

Venus did well considering her knee is hurting  If your knee hurts, it's hard to run, serve, set up for your shots...I'd cut her some slack on all the errors tonight  I'm just happy she didn't lose 1st rd! :p

If her knee was bothering her, where was the limp and why was she running so fast on every play? Men can be suckered into anything. Dushevina gave her a battle but the difference in serving was Dushevina's loss. Dushevina was ahead 5-4 in the 2nd set serving for the match, but did not have the tools to close out the match. :)

You are delusional; Dushevina never served for the match. She served for the first set at 5-4.

In the second set Dush held to make it 5-4, then vee held to make it 5-5, then she broke vee to make 5-6 and then she held with 4 great serves to make it 5-7. Dush never served for the match.

Well that is what I find a bit childish from Venus not (and I quote) "historically talking about her injuries". Most players know she's been having a knee problem since Wimbledon. It's probably tendinitis. I doesn't looks that serious but it is lingering. It's not showing vulnerability acknowledging it is tendinitis.

The original post states that Dushevina has a chance. Then you have to go inside to what I said about Dushevina's backhand. Dushevina did have a chance tonight, in spite of of what some of the arrogant men said tonight. Vera's serve eventually became her kiss of death. I am not surprised that a few of the men did not apologize for thinking that Vera did not have a chance. Vera never faced a crowd this large, but I am proud of her effort. :)

Bleah. This was shaping up to potentially be a long US Open on the distaff side.

Good fight from Venus, but :nervous:. Not sure how deep she'll go, then the potential frag match.

What happened to Vera? Not last night, but in general. I really thought she'd be a stronger player by now. She's not horrible, but I really thought she'd be further along.

Venus always looks so rushed. She doesn't take the ball early enough, and consequently is always pushed back by the most innocuous of shots.

This. I kept screaming to get in, to take the ball early, but for some reason she looks like she's so indecisive about what she wants to do with the ball.

While I like that he hitting partner was pissed and then happy (showing some emotion), I felt like he totally said too much, but maybe that was in the moment.

And Venus' on court was too cute, "Lots of prayer." :hearts:

Really odd match. Venus was down countless deficits, but i always felt like she was still going to win. Dushevina was playing one of her better matches too, which was even more odd. There were times when she was playing FREE tennis. Hitting her forehand with some fluency too, which is a complete rarity. A really good effort from Vera i thought, but just didn't quite have the courage on key points. It's so obvious when she's under pressure, because her serve and forehand just completely fall away.

Venus had a lot to contend with tonight, so it's good for her she got through. Venus has had many losses early at Slams with 50+ errors thrown in, so for her to pull this out will give her some confidence at least. Major issues with her serve though, which maybe were contributed by the knee. It's not that she wasn't able to generate pace on the serve, but her timing and rythm were completely thrown. Still Venus is incredibly dangerous in this tournament now. Her form now is completely unpredictable.

Uh, the last two sets were pretty good. I loved this match, tons of great points.
My feelings exactly and actually i was amazed on how Venus hung in there, she was forced to hit a lof of shots, for an almost 3 hour match, and considering how ugly she can be, she did not have that many errors for an almost 3 hour match.

Great match, i loved how Dushevina returned serve the whole match :bounce:

don't believe everything you read. I attended the night match last night and the crowd was firmly behind Venus. We were stunned that Venus was injured at the beginning of the match and just could not find her range. It seemed like everything she hit was long, wide, a double fault or a foot fault. We did not have a lot of good tennis to cheer in the first set and a half but we were sceaming for Venus.

I had no voice left when I got home because I left it all at Arthur Ashe for Venus. We literally willed Venus to play better. She siad in her on-court intervire that she felt our energey when she was serving to stay in the second set at 4-5. It was awsesome.
Vera Dushevina played very well and seemed to return all of Venus' serves. We applauded her good tennis as well.
