DJ AM was found dead of an apparent drug overdose inside his Manhattan apartment Friday, sources said.

The 36-year-old celebrity spinner, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, was discovered surrounded by drug paraphernalia inside his $2 million Tribeca pad about 5:20 p.m., sources said.

Less than a year ago, Goldstein narrowly escaped death when a plane he was riding in skidded off of a South Carolina runway and burst into flames.

Four people were killed. Goldstein, who rose to stardom after he began dating Nicole Richie, suffered severe burns but escaped alive.

Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker also survived the crash.

"My deepest condolences for DJ AM," Barker's ex-wife, former Playboy playmate Shanna Moakler wrote in a Twitter feed. "You were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends."

Goldstein was slated to star in a intervention-style MTV reality show, helping teens break their drug addictions.

Born in Philadelphia, Goldstein battled drug addiction, obesity and depression as a youngster.

He landed in rehab and after beating his drug problem, got gastric bypass surgery.

Goldstein's relationship with Richie was up and down. They were engaged in 2005. But a few months later, the couple broke off the engagement.

Goldstein subsequently dated a number of Hollywood hotties, including Mandy Moore, supermodel Jessica Stam and former Miss USA Tara Conner.

you were given a 2nd bloody chance when you survived this plane crash only to die of a drug overdose?

so much you could have done with the rest of your life

RIP Adam

Maybe someone is perplexed because you know who Jill Craybas is.

Always bad when somebody dies, the media just makes it worse by making a big deal about it.

Ditto on wasting his 2nd chance on life.

That's really strange. I was just looking at his billboard yesterday on my way to get a tan in Atlantic City.
He was coming to one of the casinos and I remember saying to myself, I really want to see his show.
I really like to support my Philly natives.

I guess I won't get that opportunity now. :(
RIP DJ AM.

The interesting thing is that Nicole Richie is really not a bad singer (when you consider Paris Hilton supposedly being one).
Dandelions is one of my favorite songs. It's surprisingly deep from someone who I expect to be so shallow.
They really could have been a good team if they stuck it out.

You'd think after nearly missing death he'd stop with the hard drugs. Stupid stupid.

 Survives a plane crash then goes and does drugs. Not saying he deserves to die but he surely didn't appreciate it

but there is a thing called survivor's guilt and you have no idea what that can do to someone who struggles with self-esteem , possibly depression and drug issues. Not everyone comes from and accident and thinks, thanks for giving me a 2nd chance. Some think, "why me, I'm not deserving" and then the guilt eats away at them.

This is a tennis board, sweetie.

Doesn't change the point though.

I'm perplexed as to why people even know who this is.

I'm more perplexed as to why noone has posted a thread on Dominick Dunne's death.
I can understand people not knowing because he died a day after Ted but this dude being a bigger story than him kinda shows a lack of appreciation for writers in general.

DJ AM, Star Disc Jockey, Found Dead

By ANAHAD O’CONNOR
Published: August 28, 2009

DJ AM, a high-profile disc jockey who was as famous for his much-chronicled relationships as he was for his creative scratching and mixing on the celebrity club circuit, was found dead on Friday evening in his apartment in Manhattan, the police said.

The police said his body was found in his seventh-floor apartment in SoHo about 5:30 p.m. after friends had tried unsuccessfully to reach him for days. The chief police spokesman, Paul J. Browne, said the police did not suspect foul play.

DJ AM, 36, whose real name was Adam Goldstein, was discovered face-down in his bed wearing only sweatpants, with a crack pipe and unspecified prescription drugs nearby, an official said.

Emergency workers had to break down the door to get in after one of the friends who had been trying to reach Mr. Goldstein called 911 on Friday.

In an interview with The New York Times in 2007, Mr. Goldstein said he drank heavily, used cocaine and smoked crack in his early 20s, reaching his lowest point when he attempted suicide in 1997. But he also said he had cleaned up his life — including having gastric bypass surgery after his weight ballooned to 324 pounds — and had managed to stay sober for nine years.

“At my core I am a glutton, so I’ve had to learn everything in moderation,” he said at the time.

In October, The Associated Press reported, MTV was to begin his new reality show, “Gone Too Far,” in which he and concerned families staged interventions for drug abusers.

He also survived a plane crash a year ago that nearly killed him.

A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Goldstein was known for his “mash up” style of spinning, in which he jumped across various genres and eras to combine songs from artists as different as Jay-Z and Journey.

He had been a familiar figure on the Los Angeles club circuit since the 1990s, but it was his highly publicized relationships with Nicole Richie and other starlets in recent years that earned him B-list stardom. He was featured in an episode of “Entourage” on HBO, and he commanded fees in the tens of thousands of dollars to spin at nightclubs in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York.

In 2006, he presided at a party during Super Bowl XL in Detroit that was attended by three generations of the Henry Ford family.

Mr. Goldstein was seriously injured Sept. 19, in the crash of a Learjet 60 plane in Columbia, S.C. The crash killed four people and injured Travis Barker, a musician and former drummer of the group Blink-182, with whom Mr. Goldstein frequently appeared. On Friday night, throngs of friends and fans gathered outside Mr. Goldstein’s apartment building at 210 Lafayette Street. Many described him as a friendly and approachable man who was serious about his music and who always stopped to talk to fans who recognized him. Mr. Goldstein regularly posted messages on Twitter, including one final, poetic note — lyrics from a Grandmaster Flash song — that he posted on Tuesday.

“New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain’t always what it seems.”

Wow. Rest in peace. It does seem odd that he'd do drugs after surviving that crash and also since he's doing that intervention show thing on MTV.

The interesting thing is that Nicole Richie is really not a bad singer (when you consider Paris Hilton supposedly being one).
Dandelions is one of my favorite songs. It's surprisingly deep from someone who I expect to be so shallow.

Actually, I believe Nicole Richie is far from shallow. Just because she was hanging out with Paris Hilton, and had that reality show with her, doesn't necessarily mean she is shallow. She was the cheekier one of the two, for sure, on the show but you could always tell that she's better than that. I suppose the 360 that she has done with her life kind of proves it.

This is true, and I saw Dunne interviewed on CNN, etc. many times. But why is a DJ treated like an "artist"? That would be like me pulling together all my music related posts (maybe a thousand, I presume) grouping them together by some criteria, and having the gall to act like I was doing anything more than displaying my memory and the talent of others. :shout:
