I'd love to see a Maria-Kim final as well. I am not a fan of Kim and have other faves left in the draw in fact but a battle of the comeback girls would be

I think i am worst than you, what about Pennetta? she's playing unbelievable tennis lately!

:hearts: I'd love Pennetta to go far.. but win?, idk if i want her to win a slam before JJ..:tape: I'm pretty much that way about every player. I don't want the players who have won before to win, and i don't want anyone to surpass JJ either..:fiery: so basically i don't wan't anyone but JJ to win. (Just like Ma Baker)

 to JJ.. i think we all knew something was not right when she came on court, but she's been this way the whole year, so it was hard to tell if it was just her fighting her demons or something else.

JJ hasn't been herself this hardcourt season.. she did have an incredible run at Cincy, but if she hadn't saved those MPs against Demented, it would have been 5 straight tournaments where she's had MPs and ended up losing (Wimbly,Stanford,Cincy,Toronto and USO)

Somethings are just not meant to be... you can only prepare, you can't predict.

I wish I had known about this before the match. I wouldn't have been so pissed at her yesterday. I remember how I felt when my grandfather died so I can't blame her at all :awww: Poor her, she actually did great, of course I'm not talking about wasting her several chances to finish the set/match, I mean the fact that she made this match as competitive as it was.
This year has been a mess, maybe she'll manage to win one more tournament. No chances for YEC, right? I'm hoping for a better 2010, her GS results can't get any worse, can they? :crying2:
Jelena  We still all love you, no matter what

She might still have a shot, though it depends on what other players do. Pennetta especially, Vera, and to a lesser degree someone like Maria who could maybe make the final here or win. But of course JJ could catch fall fire again.

Jelena  We still all love you, no matter what :hug:It was almost as if she did not want to win but wanted to fight. I mean winning a match when someone just died has no meaning anyway so why do it but at least she gave her fans something back.

I was never able to be mad at her or want to smack her in the head when she doesn't play as she should, i always find some rational explanation for everything, and you know, i am glad i am like that, especially yesterday. I knew there were something wrong, but nobody couldn't have known unless she had say something.

I am still kinda speechless... 2009 was a tough year for her, she certainly grew through it and keep learning. Always said tennis is an entertainement for us, and we choose her as our favorite, our goat, our dear JJ. When a badluck happen, sometime, series a those badlucks follow. I think we all thought it that series was over for her, since she had a very good summer, but no, it wasn't!

Hopefully, time will heal her wounds, and she will come back to us stronger then ever. Till then, hope she'll and they'll take good care of her and she'll take care of them.Well said! Play on JJ because that is what you enjoy. In the ends days like this will make her stronger.

TBH i'm already over it. Cincy title and the win over Clijsters were too awsome. Is she ever gonna win a Slam?. Who knows...i still think she can, she's young and talented. Can't wait to see her in the fall, hopefully dominating the tour once again.

Maria said this about JJ at her interview yesterday: Q. After Melanie beat Jelena Jankovic in Wimbledon, Jelena Jankovic said she doesn't have many weapons and she wasn't too impressed.
MARIA SHARAPOVA: Shocking. Shocking that she said that. But they went on to ask her about a dozen more questions about Oudin. I bet she was pissed off.

And this is what Oudin said: Q. What do you think you've shown about the weapons that you have in your game? This is something at Wimbledon, when you beat Jelena Jankovic, she said you didn't have weapons. What do you think you've shown here?
MELANIE OUDIN: I think the biggest weapon can be mental toughness. It doesn't have to be a stroke or a shot or anything like that. If you're mentally tough out there, then you can beat anyone. I think that's what I really did well today and I've done in my past matches. I'm so focused and I fight super hard. So it's not going to be easy to beat me or I'm not going to back down at all.

 It's a strange thing to say. Knowing Maria, she was most certainly pissed she lost and was probably a bit sarcastic.
But this Oudin-hype is starting to get on my nerves. The girl did play great against Dementieva but I'm still more annoyed by her than impressed.

The Oudin hype is starting to grate on me too. It's pretty obvious Masha would have beaten her comfortably in 2 set's if she could actually serve - Masha gifted her nearly a full set of free points just in DF's

Having said that though i'm a bit surprised Ana was able to beat her in Stanford after losing the first set. You'd think Oudins slices deep into the middle of the court would of forced Ana's forehand to break down with how much she's been struggling lately.

Back to JJ, if she doesn't make the YEC she at least will be at Bali and could have a good shot at becoming the first player to the win new tournament of champions there, although GOAToli will be there too. :scared:

I dunno, JJ did have 2 match points last time she met this GOAT of all GOATs, so there might be hope yet.
I realise JJ is not the most loveable person in the world, but I don't really get it why some of the players hate her so much that they would rather die on the court than lose to her: GOAToli, Davenport, Ana. Especially, since she seems to honestly not care about any of them, she's too self-centered for that.

I don't really see any reason why Jelena can't beat GOAToli next time they meet apart from the mind. Last time - Jelena just folded in the 3rd set (after she should have won in two) for lack of fitness more than anything else.

As far as the players above hating her. Well with Ana I don't really think so nowadays. They are never going to be BFF (except at Fed Cup) but I don't think they dislike each other so much nowadays. With GOAToli and Davenport - it's just incidents in the past and they just build up. We all have people we just don't really like. Nice enough people they may be - but they just rub you up the wrong way. And I don't know if there are any other players that really don't like Jelena.

With GOAToli - it goes back to RG 2007. And each little incident ot thing they say about each other since then just adds fuel.

With Lindsay and her comeback - I think they just rub each other up the wrong way again. Lindsay's criticism of Jelena about if you are a professional - you just don't implode when events and decisions go against you and you are hard done by. Then Lindsay imploding herself with the incident with the lobbed ball at the end of the point and Lindsay not accepting an apology :lol:. It just makes it worse. Coupled with that I think Lindsay always thought of herself as better than Jelena in her comeback. And Jelena always thought of herself as she should be easily dispatching Lindsay away when she came back. So whatever they say - I think there's a bit of looking down at the other with a "she's really not at my level".

As far as Bartoli goes, I'd say she's had some good reasons to hate JJ. JJ kind of acted cocky in her drubbing of Marion at the '07 French Open, which included hitting her with a ball and not coming up to the net in any kind of reasonable amount of time to shake her hand. Then, there was the "blade of grass" incident at Wimbledon and the list of excuses. Starting with that match, Marion's made it a goal to play her best every time she steps on court with JJ, and I guess I don't blame her. But I still hate her for it :)

Things got a little ugly between JJ & Lindsay, but I was surprised at how Lindsay commentated on the JJ Cincinnati matches with complete professionalism. Lindsay's very competitive, but outside the game it may just not matter anymore.

I thought I might share this with you.
I belong to a Kung Fu society & our master wrote this in tonights newsletter (I don't think he'll mind me quoting him):

" .... While on the subject of the human mind, I thought I might go into the subject of focus in this newsletter. In sports psychology (martial arts is the same) the area of what we focus our minds on can have a huge effect on our performance. Focus can be either

1) 'Outcome focus', or
2) 'Process focus'

'Outcome focus' is where our mind is worrying about the outcome of an event, and what it will mean to us if we win or lose. This leads to what is called 'choking'. Choking is a stress where we become tense, rigid and lose our natural power and speed. 'Process focus' though is where we eliminate all thoughts except doing the event, and going full out. When high performance athletes and us are confronted with an 'event' we must make sure we aren't stressed over the outcome (outcome focus), instead of doing what we have been trained to do, go hard and win (process focus). All of this also applies to exams, job interviews and our grading."

(Hint - it applies to tennis too.... and to our favourites :) )

I think it is the time for revenge to Pennetta, as well as to Marion. But who knows. I don't think that Lisicki will be able to play. OTOH, her real race for Doha will begin in Tokyo, and if she wants to get to Doha, she'll do her best at these last 3 tournaments. If she doesn't want to get to Doha she'll keep on choking. Knowing JJ, I know that she's not the one who'll surrender that easy.

Jelena used to beat Flavia in her sleep - and has lost the last two. Time to put that right !!

I'm also looking forward to Jeca v Flavs. Jelena mustn't lose if she plays her!!!

Only a year ago I used to think I wouldn't live to see JJ lose even a set to Flavia, let alone a match, let alone two matches in a row (Ok, she was dead-tired in the first one).

Flavia is better now than she ever was, i guess getting older suits her. I like the Italien player a lot, but i won't mind if she doesn't win that one against JJ this time. But it sure it is going to be a tough match.

But first, JJ will probably play against Lisicki and their matches usually take 3 sets. Tough battle ahead. But is Lisicki is up to it? Probably still lightly injured...

Her draw is well, okay, could be worst! But i noticed that she always do better when her draw wasn't suppose to advantage her. So, she might beat all those players if she shows the same kind of game she did lately, but we never know! I hope for the best.

Yes, that it is time we all remember... But, a lot of things happened and she did change quite a few things hoping to be better, but the results weren't what she expected. I think that at the moment, she is back to the JJ we know, the JJ from mid-2008. Even if she lost early at the US open, i really thing this summer was a proof of that. The last part of the season, will confirm it.

Although, i admit this draw is a very tough one, but if you actually look at all the draw, there are not many players who get it easy anyway. Competition is getting very difficult and there are a lot of very good players on this tounament draw. Ok, many of them don't got any plan B, but if a top player play against one of them on a good day, that is going to be complicated for any player.

If JJ can get through it, it will consolidate her recent reloaded confidence. The tough part is making it through till the quart but if she does that, she might even win.

This is the big question in my mind...if 2 straight losses to inferior players in which she had match points will have hurt this confidence or if they were just aberrations.

If you think of her match against Kleybanova, she was dead tired because of her win from the day before against Clijsters that ended in the wee houra of the morning. So, she easily forgave herself.

If you think of her lost T the US open, her grandmother passed away during the night, she forgave herself to.

And it was tight matches, and her opponents were playing the best tennis of their life, that won't happen all the time. And something to notice: in Cincinnati, i think all her opponents were really difficult to play and she was very focused and concentrated, i think that will be the case here this week.

I am not sure yet, how confident i am to pick her as the winner, but we all agree that if she plays like she can play, who is going to stop her? If we were worried about JJ a few months ago, even if she lost in the second round of the US open, i'd say, she is the one looking stronger at the moment. All the other girls seem to be where JJ was in April.

But i am the one always saying let's take one match at the time, a set at the time, so, let's do that.

Whatever the reasons, it may stick in JJ's mind that she lost those 2 matches in surprising fashion. These things can compound on each other, no matter how good the excuses are. I'm not saying she's lost her confidence but I'm concerned. I think that's more rational than saying JJ looks strong, which she hasn't since beating Clijsters.

You are intitled to believe so, with good reasons. I hope i am right, but that doesn't mean that it will be the case but let's hope the good vibes are still there. And after the tough year she had, she manage to won 2 titles, i'd say, we can be positive.

Oi vey - the curse of the Serbian sisterhood (I'm sure that was a Nancy Drew mystery, or something...!)

:haha:

Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot all together wouldn't be able to solve that one.

Seriously though, even if Ana and Jelena were pretty even in sucking on the big stage this year, Jelena had a much better season. Jelena won two titles, reached QF 5 times, reached SF once - that's 8 OKish tourneys. OTOH, apart from one lucky final appearance in IW, Ana only reached QF stage at two other tournaments this year.

That's why Ana is #17 in the Race and JJ is #9 with 1000pts more.

The power of Lisicki doesn't scare JJ, but she has to be consistent to win this one.

The players in women tennis are totally lacking of motivation, i think. How to explain all those loses? And from what we've seen this late summer, JJ seem to have her motivation back. Will she be able to get away one this one to?

And maybe to see all those high seeded players lost makes things complicated for those left. They put pressure on themselves, maybe? I just cross my fingers and toes that JJ will be focused.

Actually, Lisicki is a player that always worries me, she has so much power and if she has a good day and mantains a high level of play (well, first serves in and such), she'll be very hard to beat. But what worries me more than Lisicki is the fact taht JJ hasn't played for quite some time and we know how slow on the uptake she is... Let's hope Lisicki isn't in some GOAT mode tomorrow and that JJ is fully awake at least by the second set.
Come on, Jelena, you need points.

Bartoli, of course, let's not forget Bartoli, but, i think it's her turn now to win. But first thing first...

Yes, if Lisicki is consistent, that is going to be complicated IF, JJ isn't. JJ can deal with Lisicki power if she is consistent. She will use it at her advantage.

As the fact that she hasn't play for a while, it is a very good point, but many players are in the same case. And like you said it so well, JJ is sometime a little slow to open the engine, so we never know. We'll soon know!

She did look pretty grumpy most of the match though.

Let's hope the grumps were because she let herself be dragged into a 3rd set, and I'm not entirely convinced she can drag out too many of those at the moment. Maybe later if she plays herself into form, they won't make me so nervous.

Sep 29th, 2009, 12:25 PM
Except for end of second and really nervy beginning of the third it was good tennis from jelena.
She really was down on herself in that period.
Actually Lisickis short clothes change break after 2nd set gave Jelena more time to get out of that hole. Could have been crucial.
I respect Lisicki a lot. IMO she's a future top-10 top-5 for sure. So this was a huge win.
Well done Jelena.

Sep 29th, 2009, 12:52 PM
Let's hope the grumps were because she let herself be dragged into a 3rd set.

Actually I didn't see her smile once in the match and she was grumpy all the time including the first set when she played well and even when she won the match there was just barely a smile. But in the 2nd set and the start of the third set she started whining to herself and to Sanchez about her play which isn't usually a good sign. I've seen her play worse when she'd be much happier out there.

Oh and one other. She got some very dubious calls in her favour. I don't think Jelena got any bad calls at all but Sabine certainly did - and at quite mportant points too. I think Jelena probably knew a lot of them were bad calls - well whether she did or didn't - today was a day for her it was the umpire's job to overrule if it was bad. And me too at the time. If Jelena got a point with a bad call - at the time good. She needed it. But I can only imagine her reaction if it had been the other way around. Now the match is over I'm actually glad that Sabine showed tremendous resolve on those points and went on to win the games in which she got those bad decisions. So it didn't affect the outcome of the match.

But hey - enough of me saying she was grumpy - she won. :worship::worship:

Well, that's good to hear. I wouldn't like JJ's opponents cheated out of the win, that's not kind of win that makes you happy.
And you're right, had JJ gotten bad calls, she would have probably go berserk. :scared:
I hate tournaments without hawkeyes.

-Valérie-
Sep 29th, 2009, 01:15 PM
I saw most of the match and i’d say, the most consistent player won. This is the problem with Lisicki, usually. She is a very good player, has a powerful service and good shots, but she is usually the first one to miss. That it is why she is where she is at moment. But she will improve, i guess. If injuries leave her alone.

In term of consistence, it wasn’t a bad match at all for JJ, and she served well, aside this little low at the end of the second set, that made her lost it after she had the lead, but i wonder what kind of match it would have been if Lisicki would have been more consistent? There were some good points though but nothing that washed our doubts away for the next rounds but, this is all positive and looking good.

This is just a thought, but maybe her lack of expression, and smile, might be du to the pressure that she probably added on her shoulders, since she is now, the higher seeded players remain on the draw. This is just an impression, but somehow, it might weights on somebody shoulders at some point  But she won, so, it all good!
