Is it possible some people in GM still doubt Jelena's USO win? God I think I had to explain it to them thousand times!

And they say JJ fans are delusional...Pfffttt...

That would be great if she good win this one! Everybody would be in shock (even us the delusional fans), but it would be a great reward for this very difficult year. A way to prove that all that struggling was worth it.

She seems to have the fire again!

I've been the doctors today for a pre-GS, full and comprehensive medical check up.

I am pleased to tell you all I passed with flying colours and am as fit as a fiddle. When the conversation turned to tennis and the doctor asked me who I supported I was given a prescription for the following symptoms.

Irritability
Loss of appetite
Migraine
Sore throat
Irregular sleep patterns
Nervous exhaustion
Irregular bowel movements
Swollen ankles
Depression

 Only 9? You're lucky then. I'm so happy for you. I don't dare to go to doctors. :tape:

Vinci is a tough opener but should be a good test too. Then Shvedova, she can play tennis but Jelena should handle her easily. I don't like Bondarenko's there in the 3R but hey, it's fine  Lisicki/Ana shouldn't be that much of a problem.
Real test should come in the QF against Dinara. It's a Slam so Dinara will be more motivated than when they played. But that's what? Like on next Tuesday

She won't lose to Ana because i don't think Ana will make there! If Bondarenko shows her best tennis, even that first match will be difficult. Then she would meet Lisicki?

As for JJ, Roberta Vinci is a tough opponent but yeah, she should win her three first round just fine, but with care of course, and avoid picnicing would be a good idea. R16 will be tough, but she should past!

Mainwhile, i don't see who will stop Safina till she and JJ meet in quart, unless Kleybanova present the same kind of tennis she did in Toronto. IF the Williams sisters play like they are able to, they will have fun on their side of the draw.

Well, i don't dislike this draw. Could be worst, a lot worst! And this might means another final for a Goat, maybe even the :tape:

i rather not think about it, match after match is a better approach.

Rd 1: Vinci..
Rd 2: Shvedova/ Peskiric
Rd3: Alona/Gisela
Rd4: Sabine/Ana
QF: Dinara
SF: Elena D/Sveta

None of this will be easy, not in the least Vinci in R1. Veteran Vinci has been playing inspired tennis all year, on every surface. I'm not expecting this to be an easy scoreline. Shvedova should be next (though I haven't heard of Peskiric), and she always seems to be good at taking a set off the top players but never beating them. I expect nothing different here. Alona is one of the streakiest players in the WTA, but she ALWAYS loses to JJ. Let's just hope there's not a first time for everything, though I suspect Gisela could just as easily end up here. I do think we may see the all-Serb round 4, as I think Ana has started to quietly pick up her level again, despite the recent losses to Safarova & Czink. And I just wouldn't bet on JJ winning this one unless she's playing Sabine.

If JJ meets Dinara in the QF, I think Dinara will win. I just don't see Dinara struggling mentally like she does in finals.

Overall, I'm thinking JJ makes round 4, with QF being a pleasant surprise.

Euh, good point of view, but not true. I follow safina and there were a few matches (even more then a few) that she came this close too lose and it wasn't against top rank players, and if it happens against a player like JJ, there won't be any second chance for the Russian.

Beside, i think JJ can beat Safina, even if Safina play great tennis. :)

And, i still think that Ana won't make it to the R16, i guess we'll have to wait and see...

I've also seen Safina hit JJ off the court twice in a row last summer in straight sets both times. And I'm not convinced JJ is much better if at all than she was at that point, or if Safina is any worse. Anything's possible, but in the QF round I'd go with Safina.

The unfortunate thing about possibly playing Ana in the 4th is we all know how hungry Ana will be for a big win. And JJ is the QUEEN of giving people huge wins over a top player :(

Ana can be hungry, she just doesn't have the game and especially, the mentally state to play consistently at the moment. She can play great for a minute and then, bad the next. JJ has proven to be consistent lately. Let's see how she can keep that up, but she is highly favorite giving their latest perfomances.

As for Safina, there were one match in 2 sets in Los Angeles (7-6, 6-1) and if i am not mistaken, JJ was not 100% healthy, and there were a 3 sets at the Olympic, in which, JJ was also injured and she wasn't that far from the victory. I'd say, with 2 tough loses from Safina lately, JJ is a lot more confident then the #1 in the world. No one can say which one will win and just for the record it's 3-3 in the H2H.

Beside, those 2 players has 4 matches to play before making in there, we never know, let's take one match at the time.

Vinci is a great start for JJ! She can't take her lightly.

Safina was lucky to beat JJ last year in LA and at Olympics because both times JJ was injured. JJ was not injured in Cincinnati and she won. Who knows. Everything is possible. I would give some chances to JJ to reach semis because she sucked at all GS tournaments this year, so this will be her last chance to do something bigger, and I know that she's aware of that. I think that JJ would beat Ana if they meet.

You and I think the same. I wrote mostly the same time while you were writing this. I still think we shouldn't see too much ahead but my progress will be the title (with a lot of hope) and a final for sure, with a lot of drama but still, i think she wants this. I've seen fire in her eyes lately, and i don't know... it has to be written somewhere that the gods will be on her side this year *crosses fingers*

I still think the serbian sisters won't meet, Ana won't make it there. If so, she will just lose to JJ. We'll know then how JJ's game is going.

I hope you're right because it seems like if they do, you agree that Ana may be a bad matchup for JJ as she has been in the past. Then again, there have been 2 instances where JJ beat her pretty handily (one apparently in which she was injured, the other right before Puppy's breakout performance in Montreal '06). Somehow I'm worried that, despite JJ's newfound confidence, she's not yet at the level she needs to be to win the toughest matches.

Safina may have beaten JJ twice last year, but seriously, JJ was not moving well at all.. in her LA SF, she had set points and lost the 1st set TB.. after that she had no energy in set 2.At the Olympics, she went down a break in set 3 and wasted break points to even the score..so it's always been close..

ok, but what about Ana's level? pretty shitty i'd say... Tough match? It won't be a tough match. Come on guys, who cares about that 6-2 leads now? New found confidence, is better then no confidence at all (liek Ana). JJ is confident now, and she has a game strategy, and and and, Ana won't make it there anyway.. Why are you guys so afraid of Ana? She is half of herself for more then a year, she won't find herself in one match (or is she her true self), i still think it was luck that she won RG. And don't start with the serbian sisters thing, Jelena won Cinci despite her losing in earlier round.

Did you watch Ana's match against Safarova? She was actually in pretty darned good form there...it's just Lucie ratcheted it up a level. If Ana plays like that, believe me, JJ will have her HANDS FULL because Ana knows how to fill them. Yes, of course i watched that match. Safarova was great, but still, i was not impressed by Ana, too inconsistant, not always the good decision.

You are right, the H2H doesn't look too good, and their past history make it worst but, i don't know, i am not worry for now. And i don't know why we are talking about it, Ana won't make it there. Forget Ana.

The hardest match WILL be the first round.
Vinci was tough for Jelena to beat last time that they played.
AND Vinci has given many players tough games, some very close losses subsequently.
She better come focused and keen in THAT 1st match. It may well be the key to everything after.
We all know that JJ plays herself into the tournaments. Should she get past R1, she's on her way.

Given the recent form, she'll be really good after that.
But the start from the "still" position will be the toughest.

Given the recent form, she'll be really good after that.
But the start from the "still" position will be the toughest.

Joking aside, Vinci is indeed as tough a first opponent as you can get. She played great both against JJ in Marbella and against Ana at the AO (those are the only matches I saw). I hope to God JJ remembers who Vinci is, or we'll have a hell of the Round 1. I don't think Shvedova would be an easy opponent either.
After that...they get even worse.
But as our own wise MaBaker said the other eveing - if you want the title, you have to win them all, so..

It's funny, but the last time I actually saw Vinci play was against Maria a few years ago...I think a night match at USO. And she was so out of her league it wasn't even funny. It was kind of like watching Michael Jordan take on a Keebler elf in a one-on-one. I guess Vinci's improved...a lot.

Ana has to lose before R4. If she playes JJ, she'll get out of her slump for good.Yes, that is how I feel. There will be so much at stake she will raise her game for JJ. Of course JJ should still win if she plays her best but the occasion might be too much for her.

Crikey ... mass hysteria and near meltdown in the Cheering Thread.

Finally, a calm voice of reason.

First things first. I agree this could be a rather tricky first round match. Seasoned campaigner Vinci was good against Rena at Wimbledon this year as well. Serve and volley, lovely slice backhand - one of those Ms Jankovic will need to get on top early and stay on top. Although I do remember Vinci going down first round 6-0 6-1 to Pova at USO last year.

Get through this one and we are on our way.

Vinci had a nice clay season this year, but technically grass is her best surface. I'm hoping hardcourts in NYC don't agree with her as much.

If Ana plays JJ I am pretty sure she will suddenly rediscover the ability to consistently throw a ball in a vertical direction, however, the chances of her doing that in her first three matches are slim so hopefully someone will wipe her out before mass hysteria sets in in this thread.

OK, so it's out. Well, this is the slam plus the one JJ likes the most. The draw is tricky but it could have been worse. We just have to take it one match at a time. I absolutely agree Vinci can be an absolutely tough opponent as she's got plenty of variety in her game plus a lot of experience, but Jelena should come out focused and prepared which somehow I'm sure she will. For some inexplicable reason I have a pretty good feeling not only about the USO but also for the rest of the season. :)

I don't want to look beyond the first round for now.

Are you guys forgetting the YEC match last year?. A tired Jelena beat Ana in straights...i haven't seen her play any better since. If JJ is to get upset before the QFs it won't be by Ivanovic who by the way has never made the QFs. Best result at the open: one 4rd in 2007.

I'm more worried about Vinci, Lisicki, Dulko and Rezai.. But i agree that playing Safina in the QFs its gonna be really tough.

But now what really matters...where's the outfit??

Not only would they be the hottest team on the planet and romp to the title ...
but save us all a lot of heartbreak should they meet in round 3.

A JJ fan going to the USO should definitely shout her the idea.

I don't think it'll clash. Since I think Sveta will go three sets with Goerges, and Safina won't wipe the floor with Rogowska, but it'll still be routine and easy.
which means if Caro and Berdych make an easy go of things, I can watch JJ, and then switch to Novak midway through his match.

But whatever. I'm watching Jo Willy and Pavs-Oudin first. And I hope everything will just fall into place.

No, this is the third match of the day on the Louis Armstrong stadium and there is no specific time. We can only estimate it, since the first match is at 11.00, and the second match is a 3 of 5 so, it might take a long while before she gets there but i'say, middle of the afternoon, maybe end of it if Isner doesn't have a good serve today .

That'd be awesome if she was on an outside court :D, but given her ranking they prolly won't do that, or shouldn't do that, haha. JJ's on Armstrong today. I was hoping that she and Rafa would be playing on the same day, but maybe later on they might, as long as they both keep winning.

It's pretty straightforward but Vinci isn't really playing well, IMO. JJ is playing ok.

I'm soooo positive about today's match. This was great for a 1R match. Jelena's BH was love. I would even dare to say that she's the best player so far here.
Red dress is amaze, I wanted the yellow one to be back, but not anymore, it suits her very well :inlove:

I thought she played really well today. Always in charge. Nicely worked points and played with controlled aggression. And flying around the court. Saw her smiling quite a few times although I did miss the opening game.

after seeing the recent JJ matches, ofcourse we an tell she plays way way way better than she did 3 months ago, but it's all mental now, she just has to be strong in her mind.

:) no, she doesn't. Lisicki is looming large in Rd 4 though.. from what i've heard on GM, Lisicki has changed her service motion due to a shoulder injury. Somehow JJ usually chokes while Ana pumps herself up when they play each other.

Oh, and why were you up so late Sarah? to watch Ana lose...?
