But JJ kept her nerve so well. She is not on her game but she is fighting.

Fighting herself, mostly. In that 3rd game she finally seems like she actually wants to play tennis, not stand there and let her opponent do what may. Not happy with her performance so far in any way.

That's a tough lost, she was quite tired and if it wouldn't have been of that fact, she would have won in 2 sets. Well, she should have won in 2 sets anyway. But well, a quart is not that bad... She played a lot of tennis lately.

Anyway, congratulations to Kleybanova, she played a great match, and we'll have to keep an eye on her. I think we are going to see a lot more of her in a near future.

I'm sorry, but JJ came into this match unprepared to impose herself. That was a huge no-no against a heavy hitter like this. But I guess at this point she can feel like she's at the top of the game again, despite this. It was after all a busy few weeks of play for her. I just hope she doesn't run into a player like this at the US Open, because more often than not, she will lose.

-Valérie-
Aug 22nd, 2009, 03:08 AM
You just have to love how ecstatic the commentator is! Who is that?

Was it the french commentators? Quite frankly, Helene Pellletier tried to be objective but Kleybanova beat our canadian so, they was hoping she would beat JJ to diminuate that lost. And i think JJ is not her favorite player. :( BUt well, she called JJ a champion many time. ;)

And well, the man like the spectacle but they were quite impressed but the big Russian. Mrs. Pelletier gave the credit to Kleybanova but she mention that JJ played a little too passive at the end of the second set and she basically was affected by the tiredness.

JJ may not have been at her most fresh, but the loss had everything to do with thinking she could play a passive match. I've seen her do this dozens of times, believe me. She didn't respect Kleybanova enough (probably partially because they've never played), and she paid the price.

I've seen JJ played a lot to, and well, yes, you might be right. But prepared or not, if she hadn't been that tired, she would have win. AND AND, i don't care if she doesn't give credit to Kleybanova, i do. She played a great match. I doubt we'll know what JJ thinks about it, but, she sure was surprised by how powerful she was! BUt she almost win, she she should have, she would have, if she wasn't not that tired.

She would've won if she wasn't so passive. She let Kleybs dominate in crucial moments. Whether it was an error or a winner Kleybs was, for the most part, controlling the match. The match point she had with the second serve to her forehand was a perfect example. She waited for the ball and put in a weak return to the middle of the court. I totally agree with Bruno on JJ not giving her enough respect. You can't beat Azarenka, Safina, Demented and Clijsters and then lose to Kleybs. I also agree she was tired in the third set but she should've won in two.

It was a great match though.

Count me amongst annoyed at Jelena's passive play :( That return at match point in the second set TB was pathetic. Kleybanova made UEs on most of big points previously played and Jelena just assumed it was gonna happen again. Lame-o!
Having said that, she often reverts to passivity when she's struggling physically and it's certainly not out of realms of possibility that she was tired after all those tough matches she played in last 2 weeks, so meh...If her BFF takes care of Lena today, I'd say this loss was pretty irrelevant. Her passive play is certainly what irritates me the most too.

Granted she's playing herself back into form after her off-season training plan mis-fired... I dunno - a good run but probably not as good as last year's USO (although I would so love to be proved wrong) ... but I think she will probably have a much stronger second half of the year... the tail end of the season and the indoor season could be another excellent turn for her.
I think it's a shame I didn't get to see any of her matches this tourney... at least I (hopefully) get a chance to see her in real time when I'm in the US. I just need to beat the crap out of my cousins kids to get access to the TV. Maybe get them hopped up on British chocolate or something...

It kind of sucks how JJ can approach an opponent like Kleybanova so passively, when you know she'd never think to be that passive against a Venus or a Dinara unless she was feeling pretty lousy. I saw no signs of her feeling bad when she started the match, though I'm sure as it went on, fatigue became a factor. I just think she thought she could "get away with it" against a lesser opponent, like she used to do so routinely in 2008. That's happening less and less.

Passive play makes me angry, there is no excuse for this. How many times we said, that her passiveness already hindered her to win BIG.:o:rolleyes::fiery: At this level she just cannot rely on the desired errors from her opponents. It is just not enough to play the ball back left or right all the time. And on mp an second serve of your opponent....man, go for a heavy ball...just go for it.

I really can't afford to be pissed with her right now. Not after the abysmal first half of the season. Even this passive shit reminds me of old Jelena. I think this was her best showing in USO Series ever - QF, W & QF in 3 biggest tournaments (Stanford >>> LA this year), is more than I have expected really.

That forehand return on the match point was a shocker, but Kleyba's bh could have easily sailed wide and we'd be all praising Jeca for her drama and determination.

All is good, Jeca is winning USO this year. ;)

My god JJ was grouchy last night. Shouting, balling at linespeople, the crowd,,, picking fights with the umpire.

Same here, but I think the reason was that she was dead-tired and still badly wanted to win, so she was getting frustrated with herself. She was willing her body to listen, but it obviously wouldn't. Or at least that's the impression I got.
I can't be really mad with her because she really tried and fought hard and Alisa wasn't bad at all. But on the other hand, I'm a bit worried about JJ's fitness level - she had no problems winning 3 tournies in 3 consecutive weeks last season, and now, after so few matches played this season she tires out much more quickly. And durability should be her main asset. :scared: Also, Demented seems to be set on getting back that 4th seeding! :bigcry:

I know, that kind of behaviour always ultimately leads to self-destruction in every player's case. I'm not sure anything can be really done about it, except to wait for a player to mature (although JJ's had enough years to do that ) And I guess it'll take some time to get her self-confidence fully back, because when she's confident enough she doesn't behave like that.
Anyway, we'll see what happens. But I want Marion, Alisa, Kim, Safarova, Sharapova and of course Ana far away from JJ's part of the USO draw.

My god JJ was grouchy last night. Shouting, balling at linespeople, the crowd,,, picking fights with the umpire. Jelena "grunting" is never a good sign to me, shows she may be struggling physically. Too much short stuff ... easy pickings for Klebs, who had the annoying habit of finishing rallies with some unbelievable winners ... again, again and again. Plus the Russian barely lost a point when the first serve went in, something like a stellar 93% success rate.

Rest up Jelena, Neu Yark here we come.

I know. She was not a happy bunny last night. And it's never good for Jelena's chances when she's arguing and moaning to the umpire like that. She usually implodes and loses when she's like that. Her challenges bordered on the desperate and it wasn't surprising that she actually ran out of challenges in the 2nd set.

Mind you - have to laugh at what I think was one of her comments "You need glasses".

Anyway I'm pretty grouchy right now. She beats Kim :( but then loses to Alisa next round. :fiery: and keeps me up all night. . Wish she'd let Kim have a go at Alisa. She wouldn't have been grouchy and probably fit as a fiddle despite their epic 3-setter.

I am very pleased with Jelena's performance through USO Series. We can see that she's coming back to her old shape. Winning 2 tournaments in a row is almost impossible this year. Nobody can win 10 matches in 2 weeks. Last year players had to win 4 matches to win a tournament, and now they need 5 wins. JJ won 7 consecutive matches, with 3 top ten wins, and that's great. :worship: Last year 7 wins would bring one title and one final. What she needs to improve... she makes more UEs than last year, and the percent of first service in is lower. If she corrects this before US Open, she'll win it. All that she needs is to win another 7 matches in a row. Ajde JJ!!!

She seemed to suggest it was because of Kleybanova's low shots, and I believe her. But I still think at key moments (i.e. match point), she got passive, as usual. It's an ongoing flaw.

Yeah she gave it her all but wasn't able to play like she has done. I'm sure she knows what she's like to have done. But doing it is another matter when Alisa was giving her so many problems and she was probably feeling the affects of her match agaist Kim.

A couple or more things I'd really like her to do that haven't been mentioned:

Just do a bit more preparation about her opponent. She has a team but she always talks about having to work out during the match how to play an opponent she hasn't played much and finding some aspects being surprised about and difficult to cope with. She found it difficult to read Alisa last night. Maybe with more knowledge and preparation specifically about Alisa. I don't know....
.
I also think she needs to do better and could do better when players drop shot her. She is quite vulnerable to this. And yet she's one of the fastest players out there.
.
Also - Jelena must somehow get fitter and less tired in 3rd sets. Easy to say this. But she rarely has short matches and if they are all going to be long - she better try to get used to it and lnow she won't get far if she's always playing long matches unless she is super fit. She needs to be that much fiiter and have more stamina than her contempories who can win their matches in less than 3 hours.
.
Also finally I'm a tad concerned and not sure how much say Sanchez has as her coach and her preparation now. There are things to work on - but who decides now. Who spots the weaknesses and the things to work on and what is the process now. How much in the loop and trust does Jelena have in him if he spots something he thinks is wrong. There was earlier in the year she was saying she'd probably dump him. And she doesn't give him any credit nowadays.Anyway - something has been working with Jelena and her team better than earlier in the year. Hopefully she can improve the way it has been going lately and she knows and works on what she must do and can have a good USO.

I never understood why she is so vulnerable to drop shots. When she reaches them her reply is always a simple push. 3) Recently I noticed that she shortened matches by tanking one set if she is tired which I think is a great strategy. Then she can raise her game in the third. If she had done that yesterday she might have won.

You know, I'm not totally concerned about this part, just because I think there's very few players she might have expected to hit effective dropshots, and obviously Alisa wasn't one of them. Maybe it's something she doesn't expect at first, but she adjusts.

Can she draw Marion? :scared:

Not before the QF and only if Marion upsets a top 4 seed in R4. The same goes for Stosur.

I predict:
R3: Kleybanova :hearts:
R4: Ivanovic :inlove:
QF: Serena

Sure I wouldn't want her to draw Alisa in R32, but I think Maria might be a worse opponent there.

I support that to... They only reason she lost to Kleybanova is that she was tired of her match of the night before that ended so late.. Usually, in grand slam tounament, they have a day between almost every match, unless shit happens, so, this is not likely to happen again.

I feel she is back, and i feel she will surprised us again, positively!

From what I've read her fatigue was ONE of the reasons she lost.
But her passive play, her "I'm tired so this is my go-to" was the other.
I would even hazard a guess that her crankiness also contributed.

JJ is still very much a work in progress in terms of maintaining her aggressive play, maintaining her concentration (it's no surprise she's often voted as the WORST tempered player by the ball kids) and obviously she's got to develop her stamina to be able to scurry about over 3 sets.

Also - NY gets disrupted by rain at times... Murray/Nadal Semi last year?
So... nothing is certain. She's coming a little into form, sure.
But she's a long way to go.

Mind you - if Les Williams can "play" themselves into a Slam... then JJ can too... but she has a long way to go. She'll have to win this the hard way.

For some reason I see Elena getting the easiest draw at the USO. Also, I saw in GM that the last 5 Toronto winners had gone on to reach USO final that year. And there I was wondering why the hell did Lena drop to her knees after she won the final yesterday...

This is gonna be one crazy USO, can't wait!

Hopefully Jelena will get somewhat tough draw so she can stay focused all the time.

Maybe, but everybody in this forum knows that JJ likes it the hard way!

I agree that she is still climbing a long hill after her drop this year and she hasn't reach the top of her from yet. I would be surprise myself is she can make it to the final again, but, she feels confident and she will have a couple of round that will help her settle her game for the rest of the tournament.

So, even thought i would surprise that she makes it to the final, the contrary wouldn't surprise me either. I don't know, somehow, i think the cards will play in her favor. It gotta be!!!

Jelena's "doin it the hard way" USO 09 title.

1R: Edina Gollovits
2R: Alona Bondarenko
3R: Sybille Bammer
4R: Kata Bondarenko
QF: Caroline Wozniacki
SF: Dinara Safina
F: Elena Dementieva

Nothing can go wrong .... can it ?

Speculation, Speculation, we'll see soon enough how this draw will look like. Friday, right?

Either way, i don't think the draw matter. It will depend on the energy she'll have in each match to think cleary and know what to do on court. If it's hard, it can become lighter when seeded players will lose and hopelly, JJ will be one that will remains.

I'd also like to add that JJ making the USO QF would be about the most I'd expect. Anything past that would be gravy...her Cincy run was great, but as we can see, she's not out of the woods when it comes to subpar performances, whatever the cause.

You certainly had fun, Pica_Pica! What a prediction! i wish it will come true! It could, but well, wtih a little luck, a touch of glitter and a lot of drama!

I wish she could win it, just the shut everybody's mouth. But if she doesn't at least, i hope she'll have a better results then the other 2009 slams. But it looks good. Even with a tough draw, she has good chances.

Nothing more frustrating than being a fan of unfulfilled potential.

As Dame Virginia Wade remarked during Wimbledon.
Jelena's fans (of which she is definitely one) can feel a little let down....
all that talent hasn't nabbed at least one biggie. *SIGH* (YET)

I'll never forget Wade calling the Bartoli/JJ Wimbledon match, talking about how much she liked JJ's game, and by the end talking solely about how Bartoli's shots were skidding off the grass.

JJ has some great British commentary support actually - Ginny W LOVES her... totally, but Chris Bradnam and Jo Durie were completely bowled over by her more aggressive play in Cincy... (not to mention their usual giggle-fest over her gawd-awful outfits this year... even Jo was rendered speechless by frillopalooza)

дalex
Aug 25th, 2009, 08:21 AM
Chris & Jo love talking about the outfits. Chris always starts and then Jo joins in by making fun of Cris for constantly talking about on-court fashion. At least that's how I remember them. :hysteric:

RFS

hahahahaha .... frillopalooza

Where do you get them from RFS ?? .... genuous.

Bradnam and Durie are a good commentary team. Chris can't resist gently teasing Jo about anything and everything in the vicinity. Jo is pretty sharp with the dry one-liner comebacks .... to guffaws of laughter all round.

Remember one outdoor US tourney last year (might be Charleston). The custom of any couples caught on the jumbotron during the sitdowns respond with a kiss and a cuddle. Cue hootin', hollerin', rounds of applause all around. On one particular occasion the camera scanned right into the open window of the ES commentary box.

CHRIS: "Well Jo ..... how about it?"

JO: "NO .... NEVER".
:haha:
Oh classic!

frillopalooza :haha:

I don't wanna scare you, but we went to the tennis shop the other day and my 10-year-old girl showed me a new junior adidas outfit that she just has to have. :help: Well, the skirt has a short bit of something like a net curtain on the front in a different colour than the rest. I was trying to picture Bartoli, Serenissima or Kleybanova in that. Not to mention how impractical that is to wash (or one little scratch or fall and it's gone).
