I agree with you. Szavay is able to beat great players, that is a proof. She is able of the worst and the best. It was a tough match for an apetizer. A tough lost, of course, but at least, she wasn't crushed. It is probably a combinason of a lack of tennis, a lack of consistancy, from both player, and at the end, the one of the confidence of the first meeting victory won. Let's hope that it won't affect her way to the title at the AO open... Hey, one can have dreams, right?

Frankly, it is too bad we can't count on her when she serve from the match. How many time she did that last year? Let's hope it was to fool us all and she will do better in the AO.

Cheer up everyone, it is going to be a roller coaster ride this year to.

Just came back home from Homebush.
I went to see the match because I figured that there was a possibility that she may loose, so figured it would be worth while having a look.

it was held at 11am local time, match finished near 2 pm, long long 3 hours. The match was in court 1, so for a $10 ground ticket you could have a look. Virtually all seats ware taken up.
Now it was a hell of a day, a scorcher, and of course i got sunburned all right. I can assure you that players toughed it out, wasn't easy.

Now it's not easy to play in condition like that.
One thing definitely that I can say is that Jelena is fit, looks very good. (the dress gave her a very slick appearance .)

She and Agnes have virtually identical games. There were couple of really tough exchanges, where both were hitting the ball very hard. Clearly Jelena mistimes the ball more often with the right hand than on the left. But on lots of points she messed up the back hand as well. Still she swung freely.

Mentally she just always appears spaced out however. She's a good player, but you don't feel that she focuses correctly on the key games. Agnes, she also was jittery, I think she has greater nerve problems than Jelena but she came through. Still Agnes is a good player, very, very close to Jelenas standard.

Now, for a first match, in Ausie hot conditions against a very good Agnes, I think that this was OK. Honestly after a scorcher like today, I don't feel like watching any more tennis, let alone the possibility of playing in conditions like this. This will be real good for her, the coming rest and training. We all know it she needs couple of games to get into the groove, and then she'll give a good polished appearance in Aus open. Given the way that she played, in this her first match it wasn't bad at all.

I saw a bit of a doubles where safina played. lots of wild out balls from her, in the 10 minutes or so that I watched. So I am not too unhappy with Jelena at all, even though the result wasn't good.

na it was alright, good but tough first match of the season, i thought (despite the dual epic chokes by both players) JJ put no pace on her second serve and Agnes just seemed to hit the ball a little flatter... and harder... JJ's top spin just kinda sat up sometimes, and agnes just whipped it... still hope she can do better at ao...

When is the time for the one moment...the eternal quest for this impulse, Jelena? The truth is, you must be ready to give everything and anything else must step aside. The dedication and eagerness is a MUST to achieve this. It won't come out of nowhere, no, you must force it and live for that moment...the one, that makes you a glorious champ. It is long and stony road and it is not full of photoshoots and being a fake queen. Where is the humbled girl now...the girl with the true and honest smile? Respect your job and ask yourself if this is all you want. If the answer is YES, than leave it. But if the answer is NO, a true NO from deep inside, than give your heart to live for that moment. Don't rely on time and your current state of skills, because both are your worst enemies. This season is a decider from my point of view. Change it now please....no more diva...I want to see the dedicated champ. Do it...finally DO IT. Service; Forehand; Determination are the the only three puzzle-pieces left....finally built them in.

Not a good start. I still very much want her to do well. When Kim came back - my fave when she was playing b4 - I wondered who I'd root for now when it came to the crunch. But it was Kim even when she was beaten by Jelena last year. Maybe next weekend I'll change my avatar when I find what I want.

So - I'm just going to hope Jelena picks herself up from this loss and does well in 2010 and AO next (but not if she plays Kim). But if she doesn't or has a heartstopping thriller aginst a player ranked nowhere or loses to a plyer she shouldn't - so be it. I'm no longer upset. I've lost that feeling of Jelena not winning is the end of the world.

Not that we can know for sure since this slump of hers has gotten rather weird and hard to comprehend, but if we take into consideration how she played her last matches of 2009 (YEC) and how she played her first match of 2010, I'm afraid that we should expect an early exit.:bigcry:

I don't think it's a "slump." I just think she lacks the emotional and physical stamina she had a few years ago. This will make her results more random...we may see another big title or two but for the most part it'll be a wait-and-see at every tourney whether or not she goes out early or goes far. She's not the same player she used to be

 That's possible, but wouldn't it manifest itself by her not being able to go as deep in the draws as before or to beat the top(-ish) players she used to be able to beat? And not suddenly not being able to beat anyone (since Cirstea, Oudin, Kleybanova, Kanepi Pavlyuchenkova, slumping Szavay etc. etc. are NOT even topish players)? Also, I would expect some elements of her game to be the first ones to go (speed for instance which had gone but then came back), and not to suddenly have a pusher who can't find the court? That's why I said it's odd.
Then again, it's quite possible this form might last for some time, and what worries me is that Jelena is a player who'l just say ''oh, to hell with it, I'm off to enjoy my money'' like Myskina did, instead of soldiering on like Demenetieva who managed to overcome her numerous crises, return to the top for so many times and play her best tennis at 28.

Maybe she overachieved getting to number 1 so she thinks she really is the best player and it has messed her up mentally. The same obviously happened to Ana. I would just like the old JJ back who could at least win 3 out of every four matches. Sometimes I wish I could learn to love the lovely but boring Elena instead of dreamy JJ.

I think what Jelena lacks is patience. It is obvious that she enjoys playing Williams Sisters, Kuznetsova, Dementieva or Safina more than anyone else. But she just can't make it there and she probably feels like a loser because she knows she belongs to that elite group. I believe she will find a way to keep up with the top players :)

The way it's manifesting itself is that she a) can't take a strong "punch" and b) can't close a deal. How many of her last group of losses were ones in which she held match points? Seems like the majority of them, right? Basically, she's always thrived on treading this fine line between winning and losing, but now these matches she used to win routinely are mostly losses. So getting to those later stages of tournaments will be tough if she encounters any player that hits hard and knows how to mentally stand up for herself (Shvedova, Kleybanova, Szavay, the list goes on).

I guess this has always been somewhat of a problem for JJ when she was at emotional/physical lows, it's just that now I think her default state is closer to those lows than before.

Well, my expectations are not very high for the AO. Jelena was always a player who needs a couple of matches to get into rhythm and only one match is a bit insufficiant.:o But we will see. Of course it heavily depends on the draw. I hope she will have a good one a pretty solid start into the Australian Open, too. And not wasting too much energy in the early rounds. Last year's AO were really bad and so our hopes are high that she will do a lot better this time.

Dokic faces Henin showdown in second round
SCOTT SPITS
January 15, 2010 - 11:01AM
Australia is guaranteed a representative in the second round of the women's draw at the Australian Open - but it will come at the expense of either Jelena Dokic or Olivia Rogowska.

The Australian hopes were this morning drawn to meet each other in the first round of the women's tournament, with a likely second round clash against Belgium's former world number one Justine Henin.

Fellow Australian Anastasia Rodionova will have a tough assignment in the first round against reigning French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The draw is currently taking place.

They changed that article.

Australia's Jelena Dokic faces a tough assignment to repeat her fourth round heroics from last year's Australian Open, with a first round clash against talented Russian 27th seed Alisa Kleybanova.

The draw for the 2010 Australian Open is currently being announced at Melbourne Park.

While Kleybanova represents a difficult first match for unseeded Dokic, the Australia did manage to defeat her in three sets (7-5, 5-7, 8-6) in a gripping fourth round encounter at last year's Australian Open in their only previous encounter.

Fellow Australian Anastasia Rodionova has a tough assignment in the first round against reigning French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Belgium's Kim Clijsters has drawn a qualifier in the first round, while her countrywoman and fellow comeback queen Justine Henin faces a second-round clash with talented Russian Elena Dementieva.

The first round also features a clash of Russian glamour girls Maria Sharapova, ranked 14, and Maria Kirilenko, ranked 59. Sharapova holds a 2-1 advantage in their three career meetings to date.

Poor Demented.

And just for justification, heres how I got that:

Ana's website says JJ, Elena, Sveta, and Dina are in the bottom half.
We know Elena is in that quarter with the Belgians. We were able to see the bottom of Dina's quarter, so we know the hell quarter isn't that one, which means Sveta is in Elena's quarter.

Which would put JJ with Safina.
And Apparently Safina drew Sharapova 4r

I almost agree with Alex that the 1R could see JJ moonballed back to a vacation with speedo-boy early... but I'll go with my Uncle Bruno's assessment that JJ will finally force so many UEs from Push-scu to squeak through.

(8)Mattek-Sands/Yan v Flipkens/Oudin
Jankovic/Perry v Cibulkova/Krajicek
Kondratieva/Sevastova v Razzano/Wickmayer
Cornet/Fichman v (9)Vesnina/Zheng

JJ in doubles again!!!!!!!!!!!! omfg :inlove: :inlove: :inlove:

doubles... with perry... wtf?

RFS
Jan 17th, 2010, 05:03 AM
Needs match practice and court time.
I guess Beth wants a realistic chance at the title? She and JJ would have a lot of fun, but Beth/Yan could well be good contenders to get deep in the dubs... and JJ would always be a risk to drop IF she gets further than we think here.

Pfft - coverage starts here (UK) at 11 ... maybe I'll catch some coverage when I get up first thing on Monday....
Hoping if I get up around 6am I should get some coverage of the later matches.

I love that she's playing doubles for practice again. Hope she and Shennay can win a round but I doubt it.

I think they are going out in that first round. Why is she not playing with Beth anymore?

Probably because Beth has become serious about doubles.

Almost as if Ana knew about Jelena`s bad start of season in Sydney! Gentle Ana!:awww::lol:

Really can`t complain about R1 and R2 opponents.
R3 probably vs Alona Bondarenko.
R4 maybe vs Bartoli.:unsure::lol:

Surprised Jelena plays doubles.
But even more surprised Jelena plays with Perry.
And Ana plays Perry in singles R1!

Jelena and Ana are so different, but somehow so connected. Weird...

Good luck in Aus Open, Jelena!:D;)

Jelena won't play today, unless they move her match  In the men's match the second set is to start, and then there's Demented's match and after that our girl. And it's already 6pm in Australia

I never want to hear people kvetching again about Wimbledon and rain... people act as if it's the ONLY slam that ever has rain delays...

It's bad news for a Slam if there's a lot of disruption in the first week... my friend who works for the All England club says it always throws them in a panic - if it's the second week it's not to bad as the baby players get bumped and they move the main matches around the outside courts. But rain on day one is a horror - 2 lots of Round of 128s to get through... eeeeek.

Keep strong JJ...

I don't know, I just figured that since they are so behind with the schedule on Jelena's court they would move her to get her match done today. As of now, it's stil raining there and honestly, I don't like the perspective of the match starting at late night aka 10pm
