Good question. But I guess it means the others weren't much better. Well, Vera was really, really unlucky, she seemed to have a great season in front of her and then got sidetracked by an injury. I do feel for her. As for the others - what on earth is Venus doing in Doha, for example?
Let's hope JJ manages to get some nice wins there. :)

BTW, does the fact she qualified mean that she'll remain in Top 10 till the next season?

Yeah, she should stay top 8, too, unless she loses all her matches at the YEC and Vera or Aga wins Bali.

JJ better look at this year of being co-opted by Irina and realize how lucky she was to make it to YEC. And after she does that, she better do her best there and go out on a great note for 2010. Because she really, honestly, could've ended up nowhere near qualifying. Good job though, and feel badly for Vera, especially the way she's lost some of these matches lately.

I'm afraid this might be in the back of her mind as she tanks to Alisa again

I'm afraid this might be in the back of her mind as she tanks to Alisa again

She said so herself; the more she plays real matches, the more regular she become. And i am sure she wants to get her revenge over the tall Russian and losing this match is something she doesn't even consider.

She did have a very rough year, but i think for her, finishing the season on a high note is what she wants to do. Kleybanova is the only one now, that can't stop her for getting that title and she certainly knows that she is the best contestant left in the draw.

IS JJ ever gave up? i mean, she usually fight with everything she's got no matter what, no? Okay, she stopped in Toray, but she didn't know the extension of her injury, but usually, i can't say that she ever gave up so, i think this title is her's, if she plays a consistent tennis.

When I say "the back of her mind," I mean subconsciously. I don't think JJ would ever tell herself in so many words "this match isn't important to me," but it'll be harder to motivate herself to win it than if she had a spot in Doha on the line to fight for. And from what I've heard, JJ's play has been far from peak, while Alisa is 61 62'ing everyone in sight. Still, I expect that if JJ does lose this it'll be a tight one again. She knows she has a great shot at adding another tournament win to her resume.

She cannot be tired because she has not done much and she needs to win matches to boost her fragile confidence. This is a great opportunity but I am not sure that she is playing well enough to take advantage (have not seen her matches, just live score so I am just guessing). She was determined to get to Doha and maybe, now she has got there, she will not fight so hard to win this tournament. No one, including her, has a clue because she is so unpredicable this year.

That's what worries me the most.
I don't know, maybe the fact that the pressure of chasing the Doha spot has now been lifted will allow her to play better. Also, like Chris said, she needs a confidence boost, she's been looking so miserable and unsure of herself this whole season. :awww:

But I still don't understand and never will why JJ uses her superior fitness against hard-hitters like the WS, for example, but not against the likes of Marion or Alisa? And the WS are slightly better players than these two.

What was it? Bad performance or has she tanked it. Her motivation was obviously not very high it seemed. Anyway, not a single title defense this saison, which is of course pretty bad. She was not focused and played just to play. We saw today Irina in action instead of JJ. She's apparently satisfied with her qualification for Doha, and now she saves her energy, which is very good decision, imo, if she wants to do good in Doha.

Why Klebs isn't top 20 yet with her game, I do not know.

Allrounder is right, she often plays poorly. I watched her play Polona Hercog earlier this year in a SF and she was dismal, missing all over the place. But against Ana I in the AO and against JJ here, she brought her A++ game, running every ball down and hitting amazing angle shots on the run. When she plays like that she is very tough. Still possible to beat, but not easy by any means, she is a top 10 player in that kind of form. Apparently she likes to bring it against the Serbian sisters.

I saw her play against Caro in Madrid and it was one of the worst performances i've seen from any player this year. She lost 6-2 6-2 and made something like 45 unforced errors in the match which only lasted 16 games :help:

Compare that to how she's played against JJ here and in Toronto the 2 Klebs are unrecognisable. Besides her AO 4R run and SF's in Toronto she's not done much really all season.

JJ played okay, I thought, but her attitude sucked once again. She was annoyed by Alisa's great play so she decided it was not worth it in the end. Also, her return on Alisa's second serve was very lazy, especially in the first set. In the second, Alisa's serve was on fire.

Very well deserved victory for Ms. Kleybanova.

Lose the attitude in Doha, Jelena! You're not #1 anymore!

Well this is was probably pretty much not shocking to most of us. I still think no matter what JJ's been able to do this year in Cincinnati and other places, she's just not the same player she was in 2007. Maybe Kleybanova is the new GOAT, but I think it's more likely that JJ isn't confident enough to assert herserl properly anymore. Let's hope she's actually in better shape mentally than some of the players she'll meet in Doha.

That's true, but I know for a fact that Irina does her best to make these types of players look good. Instead of thinking she can go out on the court and hit with Kleybanova (which doesn't mean hit harder, just use her superior movement and directional skills to control the rallies more), she just has to toss up prayers and hope Alisa starts hitting to the stands. The fact that there is such a growing list of players that can "have" JJ like thi is astonishing. And then I'm astonished that Safarova isn't one of them.

I know, I know! And it's driving me crazy as well. For a player who keeps bragging about ''using her brains'', she sure is mighty stupid when facing certain palyers.
But then, there's also her recent attitude to matches in general - it's as if she doesn't really believe she'll win anyway, so she can't be bothered to put any efforts in thinking out a game plan. The failure that was the first half of the season seems to have affecteg her very hard. :awww: If she's lucky, she might score a nice win or two in Doha due to the lousiness of the competition, and use that as a confidence boost for the next season.

Don't think JJ tanked this match for a minute. There was an element of lazy arrogance in a lot of her missed returns, a trait that needs to be dropped from Ms Jankovic's persona pronto. As somebody else mentioned - Jelena is not number one anymore.

What made this defeat even more inexplicable was JJ actually had a good serving day (apart from the first and last game :tape:). Makes such a difference when the big first serves are going in. Jelena able to nail the first strike with her delicious groundies and get her opponent out of court. And still Klebs was reaching and getting them back with interest. If I am not mistaken, before today Alisa was the only player in the tournament NOT to have been broken once on serve.

Here and the match in Toronto she's looked like a fricken world-beater :bigcry:

Like I've said before, Irina makes these players look much better than they are. She makes Shvedova look amazing on a regular basis. Bartoli is only GOAT when she plays JJ (until recently). Zi Yan was a world-beater whenever she stepped on court with her.

Alisa has a certain skillset that troubles JJ a lot, but I wouldn't be surprised if she lost to any of the remaining players in the draw. She either is ultra-motivated against JJ, or JJ makes her look good, it's one or the other. And I lean strongly towards the latter.

Yep...i wouldn't be surprised if Alisa lose in her next round or in the final. I didn't see today match but I remember Kleybanova playing awful against Maria in the Toronto's semis. JJ does make some players look like GOATs . Some GM posters were calling Marion the next Monica Seles....Alisa the new Davenport...and wasn't Cirstea the next big thing?. All of this after beating Jelena :help:.

JJ lost to a lot of future GOAT's this year. This will not be so in 2010.

I just found out today that JJ lost to Klebs. Well, I'm okay with that. Hopefully she will get a nice group in Doha with Caroline, Azarenka and Safina.

Since they will use the ranking of MOnday, It will be out on Monday or Tuesday, I guess...

If the draw be out on sunday that means that jj can't be in the same group as azarenka?
