Hi guys!

I have just come from school and learning the results of the quarters was so exciting! Luckily, she won her match against Bartoli!

Now, next up is Na Li. What do you think about her ? Is she one of those hard hitters? I don't really know what her game is based on. Looking at H2H series, Na Li leads... Hopefully, you can give me some information about her and her game and tell me what JJ needs to beat Na Li.

I hope we will see a Radwanska - Jankovic match!

Li is one of the players that got Jeca's number, but, the key will be being consistent and even though she had problem closing her match against Bartoli today, i think that JJ will win this match in 2 sets.

BUt as for Radwanska, i think Sharapova will beat her. BUt since JJ's road was full of great nemesis, one more, one less, what's the different, JJ has really good chance to win this tournament.

Li will be so very tough for JJ, as I think their personal relationship as former doubles partners and good friends has given Na a bit of an advantage for some reason. JJ finally beat her on a faster surface earlier this year, but that may have had a lot to do with a lack of match play on Na's part.

Na is an extremely exceptional player who only hasn't cracked the top 15 (before doing that by beating Azarenka) because of persistent injuries. She's always been top 10, even top 5 material. JJ will have her hands full.

I like Na a lot, so I'm glad she's JJ's opponent, and whoever wins will have earned the place in the final.

If Na should win I will not be too unhappy (actually I would be very unhappy because JJ needs this title much more than Na), however, in the final I think JJ will always have a much better chance than Na of taking the title.

As you say Na has the potential to be top 10. Losses this year have mostly been to eventual champion or top seeds. She has reached two finals and QF of US Open.

Losses to eventual champion - Bartoli, Vera, Sveta, Safina, Clijsters
Losses to top seed - Serena (twice)
Other losses this year - JJ and Vesnina (first two comeback tournaments after injury), Sharapova, Rybarikova, A Radwanska.
(I have excluded retirements due to injury)

Na has an awful 0-6 record in tier II and above SFs. She has never made a higher level tournament final.

I think it's kind of a psychological block she has, so Jelena should take advantage of this

I'm sure she'll try, but who better for Na to take psychological advantage of than JJ?

Na also seems to be holding back the ballbashing a bit...a new development for her.

I don't think she needs help in terms of conditions. She just needs to play her good tennis. She's a better player than Maria right now, IMO. Well, not RIGHT NOW as she's probably only better than Na at the moment, but you know what I meant to say.

Dunno, but she was definitely breathing heavily and my impression is that she's struggled too much whenever match goes the distance in last couple of months, so I'm not that confident in her fitness level to begin with, I guess.
She has last mandatory of the season to play next week, really important for her ranking that she does well there, but seeing her today, I fully expect her to come up lame like she did with other three.

Have you looked at what they are saying about Maria in her match against Aga? Shitpova, 50 UEs, meltdown and choker, patchy, all Aga had to do was keep the ball in play most of the time and usually at the end - she'll have to play a lot better to beat Jelena tomorrow. It's like you could just pluck the same words for either semi. I've not been impressed with Maria this tournament. Neither has any reason to fear each other. But the fact is whether ugly or not - both these players made it to the final. If neither plays any better - it's still open as to who wins. But I hope Jelena can raise her game.

Well I was actually watching the match and Maria was blowing Aga off the court in set 1. In set 2 things got really dicey for her, especially on serve. So yeah, Maria's looking vulnerable, but JJ looked...in pain...so I don't know what to expect at all tomorrow. Hopefully JJ will lift that level, because I really think she'll have to.

Now it's up to Jelena to raise her level, she'll have to play her best tennis, but in finals she usually does so I hope it'll happen again. The only problem is that she's facing Sharapova, so it's not depends on JJ alone. Good luck Jelena!

I watched the match as well and .... !!! I saw it differently.
Most people say that jelena could have played better, etc, that there were too many errors etc.
IMO the reason that there were errors was because she had to play with powerful strokes against na Li, sinse she also was playing similarly.

In fact I was really impressed with jelena in that she was Menatally tough. To me that is the key with her - and the ONLY thing of relevance. I don't recall that she even once mentally struggled in this match. Thus I had no problems with her making errors. I don't think that she even cared. Because she FELT that she would win.
(It's like brazil in soccer, it doesn't matter if you get many goals scored against you, as long as you score more yourself.)

That's what impressed me.

What I liked too was that she had a more maturer feel for the game. She just played point to point.
Win or lose against maria, somehow I feel that she's reaching another level, she really is evolving into a complete player.
And that serve (!!) - that's becoming a weapon now.

I like this synopsis ... cause that's the way I saw it as well.

Tactics to suit the match. Jelena does everything pretty much better than Li Na... as long as she matches her in the power department. So the JJ UE count was never really an issue, because Na was kept at bay and never a real threat.

Tomorrow presents a whole different set of problems.
The H2H between them does not lie. Pova is very much a "cavalry charge" kind of gal, gets on a roll and bludgens winner after winner. That charge must be kept in check at all times. If JJ can keep the pressure on by serving well and holding... I fancy her chances.

Well, those are good points, but to the advatage of Jelena, Maria is not exacly the same player then she was before her surgery, and she is still recovering even if she is getting better. And okay, right, Maria lead 4-1, but in 2 of those matches, Jelena was injured, and the other 3 took 3 sets and Jelena won the only finale they played. So, it is impossible to tell who is going to win considering all the ongoing facts for both players.

But the key is the consistency. If JJ has indeed, reach another level, she should win this match. She played good tennis this tournament, usually consistent with a few slight lost of concentration, but she usually contained them without too much damages. And she played several intelligent points.

As for Maria, she is certainly not going to give up that easily, and for her to, if she wants to win this match she has to be consistent. She can't allow herself to have a drop in the second sets.

Maybe some will give the advantage to Maria, and maybe JJ will need a little bit of luck, but her Dad is there and i think that could be her lucky charm.

It's 50-50, we'll have to wait and see...

I don't like their h2h but yes maria was already elite player when she took h2h on her side.
I wanted Radwanska in final because h2h with maria ...
Maria is great player and even JJ lose it's still good event for her.

Bruno71
Oct 2nd, 2009, 07:35 PM
I still have no feeling on how this match will go. It could be a Cincinnati final-type case where JJ comes ready to play and Maria can't take the punch. Or it could be an AO SF-type case where JJ's moodiness and whatever minor injury she's sustaining leave render her ineffective. It's important that JJ gets in Maria's head during her service games, and I'd hope she serves at least as well as she has been all tournament. It's going to be an interesting one, hopefully.

-Valérie-
Oct 2nd, 2009, 07:35 PM
I will remind you Maria is a 3-times Majors champion, and all the mental toughness that goes with that. That ... given the history of these two, is where this match will be won and lost tomorrow.

Yep, i remember that, that it is why i am always surprised when Maria has some moments where her game fall her part like in the second set yesterday, or against Oudin like you mentionned. BUt most of the time, it doesn't last long enough to beat the tall Russian.

And yes, the winner will be the one that will be mentally tougher to, which I associated with consistency. JJ has shown good signs of that, and they have an equal chance to win. But Maria plays bette rand better. We can be tempted to prefer one or the other but, objectively, all that happened before don't count considering the present facts.

But one thing for sure, it is going to be hot in Tokyo!

:) I agree.. it feels so different.. when she's down 15-30, i'm thinking come on JJ hit a big first serve, not please just get the serve in to start the point.. that feels good.

Her second serve seems to be definitely better, but's it's not fully immune yet.. she can hit a few more DF when she goes for more.. maybe that's something she can work on with her karate coach or whomever.. a kick serve, more topspin to clear the net and be more effective.

Her volleying skills are still pretty good, now she should just learn to transition smoothly and be in position at the net...

All in all, i'm hopeful for 2010..:bounce: AO her we come..

Their 1st meeting was at US Open 2004: Maria won 6-0 6-7(5) 6-1
In this match I saw Jelena for the 1st time.:p
I already was a Maria fan back then and I tried not to feel something positive about her opponent. But there was something about Jelena`s game (backhand) and personality that I just had to like her.;)

This is such a big match because it is Maria and it's a final so JJ has to be the underdog because Maria has a great record, however, JJ is looking really determined and I am sure she believes she can beat Maria. The only thing I am worried about is how fit she is. I have not been able to watch any of her matches but I saw a few clips and she did look tired. This is going to be a great final and the one who is mentally tougher is going to win. I think JJ is now the better player so if she really plays to her best level she will win.

Yes as you say it must have been serious for her to retire. She was saying with the pain in her arm yesterday when she took a medical TO that the balls were heavy in the humidity and that aggravated it. She needs to get her wrist looked at and not take risks. When Kim had her wrist injury - she was out for half a year, came back and and then it came back again and was out again for another half year because her first doctor made a big mistake in the diagnosis and treatment. After that - Kim hates clay partly because the balls are heavy and it puts more strain on her wrist.

I just hope we don't get all that with Jelena, that she doesn't take risks with this and that Jelena's doctors know what they are doing (unlike Kim's first doctor).

The thing that really worries me is that JJ has been known to be a tad stubborn when it comes to medical advice.
I so really hope she doesn't end up in Kim's situation at all.

Jeja  I wish she would finish this year right now and get some rest. I don't know..Hopefully, her wrist injury is not gonna become a serious problem. And this tournament was not bad at all, she at least def Bartoli, so it's all good... :tears:

I decided at the last minute not to watch this match and go over a friend's house. I obviously made the right choice. Oh well, maybe she should pull out of the rest of the year? Or at least Beijing...

 I wish she'd pull out of Beijing as well, but between ANTA being her sponsor and JJ's belief that she has super-healing powers... Though, she did cut down her schedule this year significantly, so maybe things have changed in regards to her taking care of her body?
Get well, JJ

I really hope she is being careful with this injury. No matter how many times JJ may call the trainer in her matches you cannot blame her for being a quitter. So I just hope it's nothing too serious

Or at least Beijing...Me too, I decided to switch off the alarm and go back to sleep! JJ made a very wise decision to retire which is quite amazing really. You cannot mess with an injury to your main hitting arm. Could this be a result of changes to her style of play? Maybe she is hitting the ball harder. She probably should withdraw from Beijing but I would not be surprised to see her go there and have a go at the second round, however, with Maria up following that it really seems a no brainer to withdraw now. As Ray said she needs to be very careful with this injury and not risk aggravating it.

I don't think this injury can be that serious despite Jelena's dramatization after the match. From what I've seen it's not about the wrist itself, but about a muscle bit above the wrist. She was demonstrating it hurts when she moves the wrist. She didn't fall or anything, she probably strained a wrist flexor muscle after mishitting a ball. At least I hope that's what happened. Something like that happened to me when I was playing tennis with Ma. During warm up I hit a heavy top spin forehand from an awkward arm position and felt sharp pain in my upper forearm. It was bothering me each time I hit a forehand, but I played through it and it was fine after a day or so. Also, her facial expression wasn't really painful. It looked like it was just nagging her, hurt a bit of course, but only when she applied pressure to the wrist.

She was smart not to continue the match so she can make sure that it's not a serious injury, but it would be weird if it was. Also this win wouldn't mean much to her if she wasn't able to play for the rest of the season.

An ugly, really ugly thought crossed my mind.

What if .. what if ... she could have played on.
What if she cracked.
In other words, that she was somehow shocked into submission by Maria's huge serves and ground strokes.
What if some hidden fear of Maria got unleashed (something that got conditioned in her in her junior days).
We've all heard that at Bollitieris academy maria was the one dominating.

This is a conspiracy theory.

And say you are her coach and you somehow "think" that that is indeed the fact and that your charge has crumbled like that, would you not throw in the towel and say "I've done my best and I've had enough"!

It's a conspiracy theory.
Sorry guys, just had a very very dark thought.

I hope it's not true. And I hope that he sticks with her.
I think she will need him.

Jelena:sad::hug:
Really unlucky.
Hope injury is not serious and Jelena can play Beijing. Perhaps win Round 2, then give walkover in Round 3.

Tokyo was a very good tournament for Jelena, she played strong tennis and reached Final in a high-quality draw.:yeah:

During the ceremony it seemed Jelena felt uncomfortable.:(
What surprised me was that Jelena imo was a little bit intimidated by Maria Sharapova. When they were holding the trophies Maria sometimes looked/smiled at Jelena but Jelena didn`t react.
Perhaps Jelena has too much respect for Maria, and because of this was a bit shy. I heard something like this also when Jelena and Maria were at Bollettieri Academy I think.
Imo it was a weird situation, but probably it mainly was because of Jelena`s injury.:p
Jelena`s mind seemed to be somewhere else during the ceremony.

It was a shame Jelena wasn`t allowed to speak during the ceremony.

Hope there will be many more BIG Finals between Jelena and Maria in future - without injury!
Why not a Grand Slam Final!?:D

She didn't know at that moment the extention of the gravity of the injury and she couldn't risk making it worst and it would be surprised that it will heal in a couple of days so, my first thought, she might not just play in China but, like she said herself, she'll see about what is going on and take a decision afterward.

She is not known to stop a match because of a litle pain, we know all that so it ought to be really painful to make her lose her focus. Too bad because i really felt that she stand a chance.

And i guess she will play next week only if the injury can't get worst and she might met Sharapova again in the third round so, she has to be full focus to beat her.

And i am sure she will do everything she can to play because she would want to have a chance to defend her points and i guess Anta would want a little publicity.

But this tournament was good for Jelena. She really did show some really good tennis and her backhand is back in place, she did win a lot of point with it. Her fofrehand was very precised.

BUt i really wish bad lucks stop hapening to her this year, this is not really easy to deal for Jelena and i think she really strong to still be able to play that kind of tennis. And i hope it will pay off in 2010. And if it pays off as much as 2009 was hard, what a great season she will have.

:awww::hug: Jelena. I hate that she has to be so unlucky with all these injuries. I mean, can't those injuries leave her alone for once and bug someone else, like Serena for a while?

Anyways I wish her the best for the rest of the season even though I'd like her to call it a year, take a break and come back strong next year.

And remember guys, she is winning them all in 2010 :armed:!

There could be something in all of this.

Scared. Intimidated. Fear.
We are all complex individuals with our own human vulnerabilities. Mostly able to confront everyday situations by knowing our own limitations. And then faced with the recurring unknown, unable to confront it, and the way to deal with it is walk away.

I would be suprised if this was the cause of the retirement but it's not within the realms of impossibility.

Jelena tells us she was suffering from nerve inflammation of the striking arm.
Could barely hold the racquet, and I believe her.

:)
Although I raised the conspiracy theory, I in fact am a non-believer of these, and actually hate them.
Really this final doesn't bother me too much.
I think that she'll come out of it very well (provided of course that she's healthy).
It really was not a match to "die for" as far as Jelena was concerned.
It definitely meant much more to Maria.
And as far as Maria carrying on about winning grand slams .... mmm, we'll see.
As Jelena said famously about bartoli (and it may apply in this case) .. "She's gona get it!
Looking forward to future rivalry.

There of course IS some truth to any theory that involves JJ being intimidated by certain players that she holds a lot of respect for. It's not that unusual though...and she actually can beat these players (Venus, Serena, Sharapova once, Ivanovic twice) on a regular basis as well. But it's always in the back of her mind that they're bigger and can outhit her.
